This is just what you want in a cozy New England Inn. We stayed with our 2 teenage granddaughters in a deluxe suite. It was perfect! Sitting room, pull out couch for them and separate bedroom for us. Sitting room was great to play games in and has a gas fireplace. Was disappointed in the "continental breakfast". Not many choices....

We just spent five nights at The Gris and it was absolutely wonderful. We were even fortunate enough to be blessed with a major snowstorm so the Inn and Essex were transformed into a picture perfect postcard. The staff was amazing during the storm and it was probably one of the most enjoyable and relaxing days I've had in years....

We had lunch after viewing the eagles on the CT river cruise. The food was excellent and atmosphere was very comfortable. A great 'tavern' feel with some Guiness, perfect! I encourage everyone to try it. I hear this is the oldest continuously operating tavern in the US.

Griswold Greetings! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your comments! We think it's the perfect spot to enjoy before or after a winter adventure out on the River but, of course, we are a bit biased! :) The Griswold Inn is one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the country: established in 1776, it has never...

Three of us went for dinner. My wife had grilled salmon. It was OK but kind of dry and tasteless. Our friend had baked stuffed shrimp. It was good but not very tasty. I had roast lamb shank. The gravy was overwhelming, the vegetables were tasteless, and the lamb tasted like mystery meat. The wine was good. All in all,...

It is unfortunate that you did not enjoy your recent experience with us. Your comments have been shared with members of our staff. As you enjoyed the wine...May we suggest a visit to The Griswold Inn Wine Bar, an entirely different culinary experience. In addition to a menu of small plates for sharing and slightly larger macro plates, we offer...

There's a lot to love here. The Inn is beautiful with, a restraunt, a pub and a wine bar. The rooms range from quaint to sprawling. And the location, (see pictures) is my favorite. The Inn is located on Main Street in Essex and at the end of the street is the mouth of the Connecticut River. Photography is a...

Greetings from the Gris! We greatly appreciate your enthusiastic endorsement of both the Inn and Essex! Your images beautifully capture our special town and corner of the world that the Nature Conservancy has deemed one of the "last great places" and Patricia Schultz in 1000 Places to See Before You Die as "The Perfect American Small Town." We look forward...

The rooms are Bed and breakfestish in appearance and older, but tastefully done. The restaurant is always awesome (both of these are expensive though) The restaurant also has another restaurant attached to the building over on the right if your outside facing it. (cannot remember the name of it) and this is ok for a bar, but I would not...

Had a light lunch on MLK day. Food was good. Waitress was very apathetic. Asked about food ingredients for a severe allergy and felt like we were just an annoyance. Asked about the style of Clam chowder and response was " i dunno I don't really look at it". like I said, nice atmosphere but I'd probably skip it.

We came to see the Kokosingers, who perform here for a night in early January every year. We knew nothing about the Inn, but it was great! The food was really good, and the decor is perfect for a historic New England Inn. The hotel was clean and comfortable so we slept very well. The town is very quaint and...

Stayed here for a wedding in the local area. The Inn definitely shows its age in some regards. Rooms are quaint with an updated bathroom, but most windows could not be opened and could surely use a cleaning. The bathroom sink leaked onto the floor but maintenance took care of it right away. The woman at the front desk was...

The in was such a beautiful place to meet for lunch. The food was very good and the atmosphere was so very old New England. Huge fireplace in restaurant with framed antique maps located on ceiling and walls. Cozy and historical. The location in Essex is perfect. Wonderful shops in area and near water !
