Several weeks ago, we made a reservation to stay in the Beaver Lodge cabin at the Winvian Farms property in Litchfield Hills, Connecticut, arriving on Monday, February 15, 2021 and departing Wednesday, February 17, 2021. The price per night, including the premises and breakfast was US$1,299.00/night, exclusive of taxes. Given our familiarity with the prestige of Relais & Chateaux Properties, having stayed at some previously, and the price per night, we were enthusiastically looking forward to our stay and had very high expectations. One of the key features of the Beaver Lodge that led us to choose that cabin was the wood burning fireplace that was accessible to both the bedroom and living room. When we arrived, we decided to use the fireplace almost immediately having been provided "instructions" that the flue was, and remained, in the open position. About 1 hour after lighting the fireplace, the room became very smoky. We checked the flue to make certain that it was in fact in the required open position. Regardless, the smoke situation became overwhelming and necessitated us having to open windows and doors in an effort to alleviate the smokiness. Unfortunately, this did not help much and the smell of smoke permeated the room, and all of our belongings, for the remainder of our stay at Winvian. Thus, we could not use the fireplace for the remainder of our stay -- a huge disappointment given that this was the key reason for our choosing to stay in Beaver Lodge. Moreover, due to the pervasive smokiness and smell, my spouse developed a persistent cough and had great difficulty sleeping in the room. On our first evening, we arrived for dinner at the on premises restaurant. Due to some inclement weather, and a very icy walkway in front of our cabin, we requested that someone place salt down before we return from dinner. We were initially advised that they would eventually salt the entire property at some point that evening. Due to safety concerns, we asked specifically that our walkway be done immediately so that it would be safe for us when we returned to our cabin. This is something that should have been done proactively rather than having to be asked for given the safety concerns. While the food at dinner was excellent, and the majority of the servers were attentive and amiable, one particular waiter was not and seemed very aloof. He barely interacted with us and when we asked a question, he seemed somewhat gruff. Nevertheless, the food and the sommelier were top notch so we did not let that particular server ruin our dining experience that evening. That evening, sleeping in our room was difficult because of the smoke smell. Due to the pervasive smokiness and smell, my spouse developed a persistent cough and had great difficulty sleeping in the room. We slept with windows open and did our best to be as comfortable and warm as possible. When we arrived at breakfast the next day, we notified the staff of the issue with the fireplace and the smoke. For the first time, we were told that the "large fireplace has a very small flue" and that it may require priming before a fire is lit. Clearly, this must have been an issue before, but no one warned us about it or prepared the fireplace for proper use before our arrival. They did however ask if we wanted them to assist in priming the fireplace for further use, but we declined given the then already existing smoke situation in our room and not wanting to further exacerbate the issue. We were not offered alternative lodging at all or any other remediation of the smoke issue. Breakfast that day also had some issues. Given the price of our stay, we were expecting far more. Although service was fine, food quality was far from exceptional. Although we were not limited in what we could order off of the menu, portion size was unexpectedly small . By way of example, we ordered some fresh berries from the menu. The berries were not particularly sweet (for some reason, they chose to serve types of berries that were out of season), and the portion size was small. We also ordered some toasted bread from the menu. Shockingly, what was served was a single piece of toasted bread cut in half (barely a child's portion). That evening, we left to go to dinner off premises as the restaurant was closed that evening. When we left, we shut the door behind us and took our keys. Arriving back later that evening, our door keys would not work. We were outside in frigid temperatures and called the front desk about the issue. Someone came quickly with new keys. However, those keys also did not work. The staff member herself could not figure out the issue and called the "manager" to come assist. While she returned to her warm car, we waited outside in the freezing cold for the manager to arrive with new keys. Arriving relatively promptly, with new keys, he was also unable to open our door. He ultimately used an "alternate key" to a backdoor to open our room. According to him, the lock on the door was not completely open when we left, causing the electronic keys to not work. When we left, we opened and shut the door. Nothing more. We did not engage the lock from the outside (an impossibility) or do anything other than shut the then open door. Clearly, this had happened in the past because he had an explanation that while somewhat illogical, seemed to explain our predicament despite not being caused by us whatsoever. Why this lock was not previously repaired to prevent this issue is a mystery. That night, again, we slept with the windows open in order to avoid smoke smell of smoke as much as possible. The next morning, we again had breakfast at the premises which was fraught with numerous issues. First, the server got our order wrong. We asked for sausage and received bacon. Then, we asked if they had any tomatoes and were told no. After the experience the day before with the toast, we proactively ordered a double serving of toast, but only a single order arrived. We asked for butter for the toast. It took almost 5 minutes to get butter which was partially frozen and arrived at virtually the end of our meal. We have tried to address all of the issues we had with the parent company to no avail While we received an initial response, indicating that they were investigating and seeking a response from the premises itself, despite multiple follow ups on our end, it has been radio silence. This place is definitely overpriced and I would warn anyone to avoid Relais & Chateau properties unless their customer service greatly improves. Definitely not worth the money or aggravation.

We had an hvac problem with the treehouse during our visit in December. Paolo could not have been more accommodating. Stuff happens, and Paolo was apologetic and went out of his way to make things right. The restaurant is divine and both dinner and breakfast were some of the best meals we have ever had. The service in the restaurant is top notch. Scott, a young man working in the main building could not have been more helpful and friendly. We rebooked our stay in June for another cottage, and we are looking forward to giving Winvian another try!

We truly enjoyed returning to Winvian, this time with a stay in the spacious Maritime cottage, well maintained, had a wood burning fireplace with lots of firewood and private views of the woods; check in and check out were remote, minimal contact with the staff, with everyone we encountered abiding by Covid protocols. We had room service for dinner and breakfast, the latter of which is included in the room rate, and each meal was top notch, with punctual delivery as ordered. The staff was most responsive to advance emails and requests, looking forward to coming back when things get back to normal. Winvian is a short drive to Litchfield and Bantam, good shopping and dining destinations, with lots of outdoor recreational sites nearby.

This is a special property. Each cottage here is special whether it is the Helicopter, Greenhouse, Golf, Library, Log Cabin, Music or Stable. We stayed in the Woodlands which was spacious and beautiful. On our first stay it was fall. The service was fine. Breakfast was very good. Unfortunately the night we were there the kitchen was closed for dinner. None-the-less we recommended the hotel to several of our friends. Our second stay was a different story. This time we planed our visit so that we might try the restaurant and check out the treehouse cottage with the kids. We arrived late in the afternoon in time for dinner. The meal was quite good and we returned to our room to settle in for the night. The gas fireplace which had been working before dinner, was not working after dinner. We called the front desk. Upon investigation they declared that there was a "gas leak" and that they would have to shut off the gas. Since the room had heat, we thought nothing of it, stayed up a few hours, and by bed time, the room was chilly. The heat was not working. The front desk could do nothing at 11:30 pm. There were no extra blankets. No space heater. We were unable to sleep even with our down jackets over our covers. When morning came, the thermostat read 51 degrees. In my lifetime of staying in hotels throughout the world, this was singly the worst hotel experience I had ever had. When we notified the hotel of our experience they offered to not charge us for our nights stay. This being a Relais Chateau, one of the world's top hotel groups, I suggested that they do more than the bare minimum. Even the Holiday Inn would offer to comp us on a night's stay in the future. After all, wouldn't they want to obliterate our highly negative experience with a positive one? It was our second stay there. We were members of the Relais Chateau Club. The answer from the owner was "no." This is not what I expected from a Relais Chateau. Relais Chateaus typically go the extra mile to insure that its guests have a wonderful experience. There is often that wow factor. Not here. Pity. No more recommendations from me.

A great place to getaway at the height of the COVID pandemic, though very pricey. We had the camping cottage for three nights. Everyone was very friendly and the service was very good. Perhaps a notch below what one would expect because of the pandemic. We had room service two nights. It came on time and the food was very good but lacked for something not being in the dining room. Breakfast was tasty but not special, and they twice sent the wrong dish (on two separate of the three mornings). They quickly brought the correct one. The cabins are incredibly creative. We stayed in Camping, which felt very isolated, looking out in to the woods. We couldnt see others and they couldnt see us. Very romatic with a big steam shower and a double-size jacuzzi tub. The electronics could use an update -- couldnt connect to the stereo with bluetooth and the TV doesnt have apps or an easy way to connect to a streaming device. We used the fireplaces and loved them, though ended up picking up kindling around the woods to make it easier to start. They were very communicative beforehand, and for our anniversary gave us a bottle of champagne that was on ice in the room for our arrival. Robes, towels and linens were luxurious.
