My wife and I stayed here for a week in December. Our first room was a corner room that in addition to a bed had two bunk beds in semi-private side room. It would have been great if we had our kids with us, but since we didn't, we asked to change and got a better room for us (king gulf view suite, I think). It had a balcony overlooking the ocean and the pool, and everything was clean and spacious, without the layer of sand that even the fanciest beach hotels often have.

Lots of interesting restaurants and bars within walking distance, as well as two big surf/souvenir shops (and a local one at the pier) and a heron rookery for a little nature and/or birdwatching. Breakfast was good, but as somebody who doesn't eat much meat, it was hard to get $16 worth out of the buffet. Wish they had a wider made-to-order menu.

Perhaps the best thing about this hotel was the staff! Each time we needed something, they quickly and professionally saw to our needs. By the end of our four nights there, my wife knew many of them by name.

A few random observations:

(1) There is a sister Hilton hotel next door, and Holiday Inn guests can use their amenities. On the first day there, the Holiday Inn pool was too cold for anyone except a handful of kids to use. The next day, I tested the Hilton pool and it was perfect. Don't know if they only fully heat one (which would make sense for $$ and energy), but since they were virtually the same, we spent the rest of the trip at the Hilton's pool.

(2) As I mentioned, the room was great, but I always wonder why hotel chains don't have crews travel around and look for basic, easy items to fix. For $100, they could do things like replace the starting-to-rust toilet paper dispenser, etc. (Again, things like that aren't really issues, but why give people a chance to criticize a room?) I'd say the same thing about most of the hotels I stay in, even my favorites.

In the end, we would DEFINITELY stay here again, especially if they keep hiring and rewarding great staff members.

Great location, fun atmosphere, pool was very nice, clean, lots of floats. Good resort for kids, they had lots of activities daily and movie night at the pool on weekends, plus game room. Hotel staff amazing. Room was spacious and clean. They do not service rooms however always saw staff with carts and was able to get extra towels when needed. Our room was a gulf view with a balcony and loved sitting out in the morning and evening looking at the ocean. The tiki bar and inside bar made great drinks. Tiki bar had corn hole as well. Breakfast food made to order and was very good. The only complaint I had was daily I asked staff to refill hand sanitizer stations and they did not. All staff and guests wore masks which was good. Spike and Chrystal at breakfast were great!! Walking distance to several restaurants.

Moms, you can't go wrong by booking this place. The kiddies will not notice the scratch on the table (if there even is one), or the tiny rust spot by the shower's edge. What your kids will remember is a fantastic time.
Things to know. Bring a floatie for the lazy river. I did not seem like the pool area had a whole lot. Lots of people seem to love having food and drinks at the tiki bar. Many kids had some time of ice cream type drink.
The room was super clean. At most the carpet was a bit dirty and left my white socks gray. Just wear shoes.
The hotel has an indoor heated pool for those rainy days.
If staying more than 3 days, take extra tp, k-cups, regular drinking cups for coffee are not covered in plastic so just go buy some. Take your own pool towels. It's too much trouble to remember the towel room key. Take an extra 13 gallon garbage bag so that you don't have to count on the maids. Take a 1 gallon zip lock to put the remote control in. Take the food/beverage card they give you and just hide it in your wallet. It seems safer to use a credit card to pay for things. I think they said they put a hold on my credit card upon check-in. Odd how more and more hotels are doing this. The wyndham down the street once made a mistake on a hold that took weeks to clear up. Horrific memory. It would be ok on a checking account debit card, but not a cc.

Coronavirus notes:
Everyone wore masks as they are supposed to. You will not see guests wearing masks outside by the pool or when they are eating at the restaurant. What is truly scary is venturing outside the holiday inn resort bubble. At walmart many, many people, even seniors did not wear masks. Do they forget or something? At restaurants people do not wear masks when entering and being seated. Don't expect the hotel to provide purell for you. The machines seem to run out often.

This is your typical beach hotel nothing great about it except the location. The thing that really turned us off was the lack of compliance during a pandemic. Yes they have signs posted but without personnel enforcing it, probably 80% of the people were not wearing a mask while in the lobby, trying to cram in the elevators with us. I understand it’s a beach hotel and while on the beach or by the pool it was not necessary but in common areas it should be enforced, and was not.
The servers in the restaurant each morning for breakfast were great as well as the food, great value there. We don’t normally stay at a holiday inn and don’t think we will in the future.

The staff is very helpful and friendly and goes out of their way. We checked in very late upon arrival and we were given a room that was not desirable. There were red stains all over the carpet and I stepped in something sticky the next morning so I went down to ask to be moved or check out if they couldn't move me. They moved us up to the top level in a very clean room later that day. After a rough start, the rest of the trip was fantastic! The food is very good right there at the resort, the pool is warm and fun with a DJ and music during the day, the beach is gorgeous and overall no real complaints other than a less than perfect room the first night.

We rented a car and drove over to Destin a few times to eat and shop. Parking was free and there was plenty available.

The gym is a little small but luckily when I was there only one other person was working out so it was fine, but there really isn't room for more than about three people to work out at once comfortably with COVID. It's just a very small area to keep distance.

The beach is stunning, but the beach chair rentals are OLD and rickety so we chose not to rent them and just put our towels on the sand and spent most of our time in the water. The rentals are a third party and not related to the hotel but I suggest they hire a new company or ask them to update the beach chairs.

Overall, the resort is great. It's in a great location, great vibe at the pool, great food and really great customer service.

It’s March of 2020 and the Coronavirus pandemic is upon us. The FL panhandle public beaches are closed and most of the businesses are also closed. But, the Holiday Inn Resort Ft Walton is still open and working hard to make the stay for its guests as enjoyable AND SAFE as possible! Ivana and her staff have been cleaning, cleaning and cleaning everything. Even though the hotel is at 20% capacity and they are running at a substantial loss, every staff member has greeted us with warm and welcoming wishes and have gone out of their way to assist us in all our needs! My family and I are from the Chicago area and we found out they just received several inches of snow in the last day or so - we couldn’t be happier that we ended up at this facility right now! We are, however, doing all we can to participate in proper social distancing and doing whatever we can to curb the spread of this virus including eating meals in our room. According to the CDC, we are still able to use the pool due to the chlorine in it, so that helps to minimize the frustration of being on vacation on the beach, having it within steps, but without being able to go in the ocean.
Anyway, I just wanted to share our experience here at this resort with the great staff that has worked so hard to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Nods to the front desk, building maintenance and housekeeping staff! Nice work everybody, I’ll share with as many as I can in the quality of this resort!
JJ

It was our first time staying in this hotel with a family of 6. We had an ocean front suite and from the moment I called a few weeks ahead to make sure our room was set, I was treated so well and had a phenomenal experience, specially after an 8 hour drive. Troy and Ashley in the front counter were very helpful in us getting pool towels and new fresh towels for our bedroom, they also provided me with a few extra drink passes which came in handy with our family. The buffet breakfast was always fresh and on point and you are allowed free kids meals with a purchase of an adult meal which helped saved money! Lauren and Stephen and pretty much all staff was kind and helpful with what we needed. In the riptides tiki bar, we had Joslyn and the other ladies made some phenomenal drinks and service was really fast. I would highly recommend this hotel! It was definitely bang for buck!

My husband and I needed a quick "get-away" from self-isolation and so we booked 3 nights at my favorite hotel in Fort Walton Beach - The Holiday Inn Resort.

Given the phased rollout of opening the community, I have to say that the staff did a fairly decent job of making sure all the precautions on their end were being done to protect the public. But what I love about this property is that it is in walking distance to several local eateries (including the new Stewby's location on Okaloosa Island) so that we didn't have to drive. And as a IHG Platinum Elite member, I didn't get an upgrade to an Ocean View since they were all booked... but our front desk gal provided free breakfast vouchers for 2 of the 3 mornings we stayed there. That made it a bit bearable.

I would've loved to see the Tiki bar open during the week, but that may be something done only during the summer months. Of course we will be back at some point. Looking forward to hopefully returning as soon as July!

We stayed here 4 nights and absolutely loved it!! The view from the balcony was gorgeous. Very family friends with a lazy river, movies outside on the weekends and much more. My favorite was the pool, the very quick walk to the beach and the tiki bar (they even have non-alcoholic frozen drinks for the kiddos too). Extremely clean and we felt very save during our entire stay. Someone was always cleaning something, even the pool railings were wiped frequently.
All staff and guests wore masks while walking inside the hotel. Everyone was very considerate of social distancing. Great location close to many restaurants, shops and activities. Plus a short distance to Destin. I would recommend this resort. We will be back soon!!

We stayed in this hotel for 4 days August 2-6 upon entering the hotel the lobby area Is really nice signs up about social distancing and wearing your mask inside the hotel. I was able to check right into my room which was a King bed with bunk beds. It’s was on the 2nd floor facing the ocean really nice view but when we enter the room it smelled like mildew it was very small compared to how the pictures showed on the website.

The walls where disgustingly dirty and bathroom was not so great either see pictures. Light fixtures seemed rusted vent in the bathroom needed to cleaned it looked like mold was growing through the wallpaper. When are got in the room we sprayed Lysol and recleaned every thing from the bathroom to the chairs and tables in the room (just us being overly cautious).

Lucky it was just 3 of us in the room but is was still a little tight moving around there is a round table with two chair that take up space. I stayed at the Hilton last year next door which was nice it just the mattress were really hard and couldn’t get comfortable. But anyway I will not be turning back to this hotel.

Hi Beachlover7890, I'm glad you chose our hotel for your visit to Fort Walton. Thank you for staying. We want all families to experience the joy of great holidays together. I'm sorry you had concerns about the room's cleanliness, mainly with the odor, walls, bathroom vents, and wallpaper. I also read your concern about the room size and light fixtures. I understand this brought discomfort to your stay. Trust that I had our Housekeeping Supervisor and General Manager alerted about this, and I'm sure they'll take the necessary steps to make sure the issues you raised are resolved immediately.
