Was a little long for checkin response. hotel is themed cheesily but is clean and cute, seems to be a residential motel so was quiet and pleasant to stay a night in, was good for one night
microwave didn't work, cover was missing from coffee maker.
I had to hold a butter knife under the drip spout to make it work only important if you're a coffee person, but they provide flatware for two, so it was in the room. some interesting outdoor cafes and bars in the area, kind of sketchy if you venture too far

Positives: Located in a nice section of Lake Worth a couple of blocks up from the Intercoastal and Bryant Park, a pretty public park right on the waterfront with exercise and play equipment, restrooms and picnic tables. However, the area driving down from I95 is seedy, so it makes you skeptical of what you're going to find. Surprisingly the New Sun Gate is located within a couple of quiet, attractive blocks in a fairly upscale neighborhood. Mike, the owner, is very accommodating and congenial. He personally fixes you breakfast in the morning, if you like. This is a favorite motel of Scandinavian tourists who winter here, and even has a bulletin board of activities in Finnish, so the place has kind of a hostel feel to it. The Sun Gate has a campy, 50's feel to it, and is very relaxed. Though the restaurant is no longer open (except for breakfast), we were able to still use the room to sit and relax. The Sun Gate's close to Palm Beach/West Palm Beach. The rooms are spacious, and I liked the fact that the bathroom had a window that opens, since I like to have fresh air to counter the dryness of air conditioning.

Negatives: Definitely needs renovating and sprucing up. The fixtures, furniture and beds need to be replaced, and the rooms updated. Beds were uncomfortable, and bedding threadbare. Water pressure was good in shower, though, and coffee maker, hairdryer, microwave, and fridge all functioned well.

Conclusion: We enjoyed our stay here mostly because of the location and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the place. You're not going to get 5 Star quality at this price, but for us, we could overlook its shabbiness and appreciate the amenities it does have and it's reasonable rate.

Just completed a 6 night stay. This is a great motel for the price. The key word being "Motel". This is not a Hotel, an Inn or a Bed & Breakfast. My room was clean and comfortable, had a mini-fridge, microwave, toaster, 12 cup coffee maker, dishware, silverware and glassware. Water pressure excellent. Breakfast was available every morning between 8-10 at a cost of $3.00 plus tax. Room was serviced every morning. I am a retired senior citizen and have stayed at many places over the years. I know good from bad. New Gate is definitely worth the expense. The negative reviews on this site seem grossly overstated from my point of reference. Downtown Lake Worth is a little over a mile away and there is plenty to see and do in town. Good restaurants and taverns are plentiful. The beach is also close by. My thanks to Mike and his courteous staff for a pleasant experience. I will stay again when in the area.

It was a fantastic hotel to stay at a very reasonable cost. Service is fantastic. Managers are always ready to help. Breakfast is not the best I had BUT the whole experience remains 200% positive - I did bother the manager at 4 in the morning with a problem with my key : he came to help in a much nicer way I would have in his place !! Thanks again !!

Horrible and dirty hotel with bugs and staff is rude. I got bite by bugs when I was sleeping. Called the front desk to tell them and they hung up on me twice. Very rude people that run a dirty motel where most of the people that where staying there looked very suspicious.

But I will begin...This place appeared to be a quaint, local, somewhat kitchy celebrity-themed motel. Giant, airbrushed paintings of Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Humphrey Bogart were the focal point on a huge exterior wall. Each room had a different actor on the door. Our room said "Buckwheat". Upon entering the room, there was a cheap poster that said, "Buckwheat say, 'Otay'". The room was dingy, dirty, rusted frig, broken closet shelving, pillows thinner than any I've ever seen....The washcloths were a grayish color from ground in dirt (used to be white). We arrived late at night and the motel clerk was bleary eyed and not pleasant. My father is disabled, & had a very difficult time managing the turns to get in.It turned out that as I had booked the room on Hotels.com, somehow, had been charged for two rooms, so had to call and deal with that. There are mesh steel type security doors that you must have a key for in order
to enter complex. I have now spent much more time than I ever would want posting this review, but felt I must be fair in giving specifics. You are
now forewarned.

I posted a very positive review of this hotel after staying there in 2011. I was visiting the WPB area again in July 2013, so re-booked without a moment's hesitation. BIG mistake,

In the not-quite 2 years since my last visit, the hotel has deteriorated terribly--I suspect due to the fact that Mike (the owner) has decided to keep his rooms full by booking by the hour, week, or month to some of Lake Worth's seediest, noisiest, filthiest, and druggiest characters. So, if you are just a regular vacationer looking for a value-priced stay--you will be sharing space with all these folks, and washing their congealed black leavings off the bottom of your feet if you dare to go barefoot anywhere on the grounds or in your room.

Some highlights (see photos if you dare) include:

*the bed was fitted with an ancient, saggy, filthy mattress. The mattress itself was wrapped in several layers of crinkly, yellowing plastic. On top of this, it was fitted with dirty, slippery, polyester sheets complete with burn-holes. The sheets were too small for the mattress, so they slipped off if you got on or off the bed, leaving your skin to touch that awful plastic.

*The room had not been cleaned at all in God Knows how long. The bathroom came complete with copious pubic hairs left by what seemed to be a collection of different guests. Yes, that kind of UGH!.

*There were what looked like dried blood on the wall right by my head, nice!

*The ice bucket had cigarette holes in the bottom, and came already dusted heavily with someone's cigarette ashes.

*The toaster had an exposed copper wire, which would surely kill any guest silly enough to plug it in.

The water pressure was low, the walls were paper thin. I could hear what sounded lie a very large extended family yelling and screaming next door all night long. The rooms connect via a shaky door, so keep an eye on it!

The worst part was that when I dared to tell Mike that I was disappointed, he immediately became extremely agitated and almost violent. He walked into our room as my girl-firend was finishing her packing without knocking, turned off the A/C, and stood over us yelling "No refund! You did this! You made this mess!". etc as we got the heck out of there. He really seemed like a freaking psycho! He literally would not stop yelling at my girl-friend (who is very ill and under a doctor's care) until she finally shut him up by announcing that she would need an ambulance. What a congenial inn-keeper, huh?

So, in closing, I have reviewed quite a few hotels and restaurants here, and usually only post when I have something good to say. This place has gone so far downhill, and Mike's behavior was so out of line, that I felt the duty to warn others to stay far, far away from this dirty, dangerous, and thoroughly unpleasant place.

Where to begin.First and foremost my wife almost couldn't sleep here because of the Hair she found in her bed.The building in addition to being in a part of town you don't want to be in, is very run down. The terracotta floor tiles on our second floor room were cratered in the center of the room. There were old curtain rods no longer being used, hanging over the door to the bathroom area. The proprietors of this establishment are a family of nicotine soaked grungy people with no professionalism whatsoever.I have only had a few bad experiences like this in the past, this was by far the worst. If it had not been so late, and we had to get up early the next day for our cruise, I'm sure my wife would not have stayed there. We are middle class hard working people, we are not "Prissy", but this place was beyond the pale.

I would advise staying away from this little motel from the 40's. Beds not too bad but almost no pillow. We could not close out the light from the window, had roaches hiding under everything and one wash cloth, two THIN towels & no bath mat. Returned second evening to find room not made up but extra wash cloth but still no bath mat.
The worst was that roaches came out from under anything that moved! My slippers in the morning and my toiletries kit by the sink.
I made the mistake of walking around barefoot before putting on my shoes. Had to use towel to wipe sand from feet before putting on socks.
Really a low class place to stay.

Filthy and filthy, holes in bedspreads, bugs came out at night, not like pictures on the internet. I would not want anyone to think this is a safe place or healthy place to stay. Would not use shower since it didn't drain. The furniture was something that someone picked up on the side of the road. It has not been painted in years. The only good things is that it was tiled so you could see the bugs on the floor
