Incredibly disappointed. We reserved 2 months ago and when we arrived we were told that they had set a table in the basement for us because they had booked a cooking class in the main restaurant. We felt totally mistreated and made it clear to them that this was how we felt. They were completely indifferent to our position . We will never go back to this restaurant. This is the only negative experience we have had while travelling in Newfoundland this past three weeks.
I visited the restaurant again after a great lunch two years ago. With all the Covid issues, we needed to book a reservation and we were the only ones in the place. So casual and the food was excellent - fresh greens from down the road, fresh fish and cooked with a wonderful flair. I would take the cooking classes if I lived in the province. We had a warm "berry" tea, perhaps patridgeberry. The hostess told me how to make the Korean pancakes but I would rather just return again. I also bought the hand cream (again) and this time some new products from their company "7 Fathoms". They only thing I would recommend is more signage, maybe on the main road and in front because you could drive by and miss it and that would be a loss for a tourist. These owners are great entrepreneurs who now offer tours and accommodation. I look forward to returning.…
The warmth of your hosts, Courtney and Terrence is surpassed only by the excellence of the restaurant's cuisine with its unique and wonderful Cajun-Newfie collusion. If your idea of heaven is hiking all day on trails that reveal great grandeur of the rugged Newfoundland coast and then soaking in a seaweed bath (that I SWEAR has a narcotic effect all its own), while overlooking the ocean, with a glass of cold, crisp Chablis, then here's your place.... Did I mention the excellent cocktails? My omission.
We decided to take a couple of days to explore the Baccalieu Trail in Newfoundland and discovered Grate's Cove - we are so glad we did. We loved our Snug Harbour cottage, the beautiful scenery and hiking at Grate's Cove and most of all the amazing meals and hospitality served up by Courtney and Terrance. I would have never expected to have some of the best meals ever in such a remote part of the world but they truly were, all made with fresh local ingredients. The Ramen and the codfish salad were simply spectacular and we were made to feel completely at home and so welcome. If you want some peace, beauty, wonderful hospitality and food, i can't recommend Grate's Cove more! thank you Courtney and Terrance for a wonderful experience. Also, loved the new outdoor spa!
I stayed for two nights at Snug Harbour House. The house is lovely with a deck that has an ocean view. It was so quiet something a guy from the city appreciates. There is lots of great hiking in the area. And now the roads are paved which wasn't the case the first time I was in this part of Newfoundland a few years ago. Courtney and Terrence are excellent hosts, very accommodating. By all means eat at Grates Cove Studios the meals are delicious and such large portions. There are also workshops and and experiences you can arrange beforehand. I am already going back in August for a weekend!
So quaint and so totally unexpected in such a rural setting! Amazing jambalaya. Selection of records to play. Spectacular view. Cool studio to browse. Friendly hosts. What’s not to love? PS. Just stock some tin milk fer me tea next time lol. Definitely gonna be back to try out the seaweed bath house when it’s up and running
Courtney and Terrance provide the perfect getaway experience. The room has a gorgeous view and a very comfortable King bed! The food was so nourishing and Courtney’s Louisiana flare in the flavours were out of this world delicious. The Cod Étouffée with Crab was the most delicious I have had in my entire life. Courtney and Terrance were so kind and very knowledgeable about the area, I learned so much and the hikes were beautiful! Terrance is a very talented artist and storyteller and the Cajun spice and seaweed lotion are amazing. Thank you so much Courtney and Terrance. We will definitely be back.
We visited Grates Cove Studios at the recommendation of our Inn Keeper and it was just as amazing as she described. This is an eclectic, but charming little restaurant in an old school house. The fusion of traditional Newfoundland and New Orleans cuisine was superb. Almost every dish could be made gluten free. As they are a small restaurant, I recommend calling 24 hours ahead of time to let them know you will be coming and have food allergies. I had the gluten free vegetable pancake and it was divine! Another reviewer stated that this place is overpriced, but I disagree. The food quality was wonderful, the service was excellent, and the view was spectacular! If the saying is true that “you get what you pay for,” then one shouldn’t complain about a moderate price for the outstanding culinary experience that is Grates Cove Studios. …
We booked what would be the master bedroom in a lovely house with an ensuite bathroom and large window with a view overlooking the cove. You have access to a living room, kitchen and eating area should you wish to stay a while. The room was very large and the bed extremely comfy. I lolled in bed the next morning and watched some humpbacks swimming by in the distance. What a way to wake up! It was wonderful and Terrence and Courtney were wonderful hosts. Their restaurant also gets kudos for the most delicious food.
We decided to stop at this restaurant today because my wife saw it on a previous drive through grates Cove. We were a bit thrown off at entering through a door at the lower level and finding ourselves in a craft Studios shop and having to have the very pleasant girl there explain to us where the restaurant was and how it worked. We were seated at the upstairs area that serves as a restaurant. While it is new it definitely needs some work it was not a restaurant like atmosphere simply a sunroom with some tables and chairs and really nothing else except a very large extension cord on the floor. We do however like small restaurants and don't really mind that kind of atmosphere if there's something special about it. The view was very nice. I had the dirty rice with calamari. I was enjoying it tremendously although it is very overpriced at $26 and I was willing to overlook that until the very large hair I found in my food. I didn't have the heart to tell the server didn't want conflict so I said nothing. But it did leave a bad taste in my mouth. My wife had the lobster pizza and while it was pretty good it was served on too small of a plate and had very thick doughy crust which was too much for that kind of pizza. That was around 22 or $23. Again overpriced. Our total bill for the two meals and three glasses of cola was about $67. This is really far too much for a restaurant in this area at this level. I don't think we'll be going back. There are too many competing interests at this business. A craft shop a studio and a restaurant and selling facial creams. The restaurant seems like an afterthought in many respects. They have a very long way to go to make this a place that anyone would visit more than once.…
