We were there late June/early July. the first day, we walked to universal studios, but it was not pedestrian friendly once you got near the back entrance.........so we used Uber taxis............they were extremely quick in coming (average 5 minutes) and cost around $6 one-way! :-) The Shuttle bus is free but it is time tabled - it was worth using Uber as it was quick, cheap and convenient. The normal taxi service is expensive and they DO expect tips of around 20%. Uber taxi drivers do hint for a tip but we didn't pay tips. The great thing is the payment for Uber is taken from your credit card. If you are travelling to say Discovery Cove, you will be looking at a cost of around $10 one way against $49 return with a normal taxi (excluding the tip!)
If you are thinking of travelling further, say to the kennedy Space Center, then a car would be required, although you can book a trip in advance from the hotel. the bus leaves early in the morning and I think it was around $60 per person for the bus and the entry.........
