Island Grand At Tradewinds receives mixed reviews, with its location often celebrated for being close to the beach and local attractions. While some guests commend the cleanliness and the array of family-oriented amenities, others are less impressed, pointing out maintenance needs and unexpected additional costs. The resort's atmosphere divides opinion; a lively environment with music is a hit for many, yet some find it excessively noisy and dated. Room quality and value for money are common concerns, with numerous travelers commenting on outdated decor and high expenses not matching the experience.

First rooms we checked into were very tired and not as shown on website (Courtyard Suites) so we upgraded to the two bedroomed suites which were a million times better and worth the extra money.

Courtyard Suites - One had not been cleaned properly and the cot offered looked like it should have been in a prison in the 1950's and not in my view worthy of the price.

The hotel is not completely up and running as it would have been pre-hurricane which is not made clear to prospective visitors. Especially as we booked pre-hurricane I feel we should have been contacted and had the opportunity to cancel. Missing pools and restaurants that we had no idea pre-visit were not available for use. I appreciate it's hard and they have done amazing to get up and running as they are but this was an expensive and special family holiday for us and we had hoped to not have to leave the hotel due to its supposed facilities for the duration of the holiday.

Hurricane damage aside the hotel is dated, very tired in places, lifts VERY slow and they have no real facilities for late check-outs.
In reality, you are 'lucky' in the words of the receptionist to get a late check out to 1pm, and although they seem to think that is fine as they will store your bags and you have full use of facilities until 12am that day. There are no showers so you can not get washed and changed after a day on the beach before a late and long flight and there are no indoor lounge type areas to stay sand free and await your night time flight. Just the lobby which generally was full of conference delegates.

Definitely do not go expecting a late check out or an early check in.

Early Feb seemed to be a very busy conference time of year for them which I did not enjoy - being surrounded by delegates rather than other holiday makers.

The lack of operating restaurants meant we spent more time off site than we had intended.

Daily staff were polite and friendly; reception depended on who was on duty!

Great location and gorgeous beach - saw dolphins daily and of course pelicans.
Sun beds are free and set up for you
Make sure to visit the Rumfish little shop and Coconut Charlies was great for breakfast and evening meals in place of decent restaurants at Tradewinds.

They really need to spend some money and invest in this place if they want to continue to try to justify the high prices with anything other than friendly staff and a great beach. There are so many other options in St Petes that they are going to lose business.

V3521LNsarahe, thank you for taking the opportunity to share your feedback. The team is sorry you faced challenges during your stay. Upgrading to the two-bedroom suites was a wise choice, and it's wonderful to hear they were much better suited for your visit. The colleagues at the hotel are working hard to restore things post-hurricane, and they appreciate your understanding of these challenges. The team is glad to know you enjoyed the beautiful beach and had memorable encounters with dolphins and pelicans. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts.

Great place to stay with super friendly staff! They go above and beyond to make you comfortable. The property is older but very well kept and clean in a great location with a beautiful beach right out your door! Special shout out to Joanah at the front desk as she really helped me with the reservation that I had messed up! She was super kind and got me well taken care of. Always nice to have helpful staff!

My family and I stayed here the last week of March and were disappointed with the resort overall. It is in major need of refurbishment, service was spotty, and it was not at all worthy of the high prices!

When we arrived at 5:30 pm, we waited in a long line at check in and were then told our room was not ready (despite having done express check in and it being 90 minutes after check in time). When I pushed a bit, they found us a room and then directed us where to go, which ended up being a different building than our room. So we were lugging around our bags trying to find the right room (and half the elevators were being prepared, which was an issue all week). When we finally got to our first room (which was small, dark, dank, and right on top of the noisy pool), the front desk called my cell and said our room was ready. When I told her we were already in our room, she said we were in the wrong room and needed to move. Our new room was slightly nicer, but the whole experience was a hassle.

Housekeeping was the other big negative. Most days they did not clean our room or they showed up late when we were trying to get ready for dinner, despite our calls each morning to request they arrive earlier. And they did a subpar job at cleaning, rarely vacuuming. One time, she was banging on our door when we had the Do Not Disturb sign up and got hostile when we asked her to please come back later.

The hotel leaves you 2 small bottles of water in the room, but they charge you if you drink them, despite the high resort fee.

The pools are all small, unimpressive, and crowded. We never used them because of this.

The beach is beautiful! And it is clean and well maintained. We did the beach "cabanas" each day, but you have to line up early each morning and wait to get your assigned one(s).

They do have a lot of activities for kids, but those are also spotty. The zip lining and water park were only open one or two days due to "wind." The activities and crafts often were not where or when they were listed. The nightly s'mores were really nice and well done. The activities staff were all nice and helpful.

The breakfast buffet at the Palm Court was unimpressive with poor service. Lunches at Flying Bridge and Gulf Side were good with good service.

The gym was closed and the one at RumFish was tiny. The spa was also tiny, but I had an excellent massage from Ron.

RumFish seemed nicer and les crowded so if I could do it again I would stay there. But we will not return.

All good things must come to an end. I have been coming to the Tradewinds for over 20 years every year for Memorial Day or Labor Day but this year we have noticed a huge decline I the accommodations. First off we live in Florida and our primary reason to visit the resort was to enjoy the beach. The new management has implemented a new policy that guests can no longer use their own beach umbrella behind the resort and have to pay to rent the hotels umbrella. Up until this year we have never had a problem with setting up our small 7 foot umbrella but now we were requested by the beach manger that we had to move our umbrella. When raising the concert to front desk manager he insisted the policy had zero exceptions and referred me to the head of security which informed the hotel controlled all the beach behind the resort all the way to the water’s edge and during our conversation he informed me that ‘any guest that does not follow their rules would be removed and banned from the resort’. I took that comment as a direct threat. We noticed the resort grounds had trash lying around and the walkways had debris and sand and we’re not being unkept on a daily basis. Our room smelled of mildew and we had to go purchase some odor remover disinfectant to overcome the dirty carpet smell. The sink in the kitchenette needed to be unclogged as it drained very slow. We had to chase down housekeeping to clean our room and after several frustrating calls we were able to get next day service. I’m very sad to say our visits to the Tradewinds are probably going to come to an end. It seems like new management is changing the atmosphere for guests to a rigid rules and lack of listening to the voice of the customer. I no longer recommend the Tradewinds as it is in a decline for sure under the new leadership. So much for just letting go as customer service has just disappeared. So sad to write this review but customers need to know what is going on to a former oldie but goodie resort whose day has come and gone.

Pros:

1. I can see why this would be a popular destination for families with young kids. The beach is calm and pristine with powder-soft sand, which is unlike the angry, tumultuous California Sonoma Coast I'm used to.

2. There are lots of activities to keep the young ones occupied.

3. The staff is very polite and helpful.

4. The rooms are equipped for preparing simple meals as there is an electric stove, microwave oven, freezer, and refrigerator.

Cons:

1. The room decor is tired and dated. I think it's the last bastion of showers with actual curtains besides Motel 6.

2. The elevators, if not out of order, are as slow as molasses in January. It's January. If you're on the 7th floor, better push the down button 15 minutes prior to your expected time to be in the lobby. I'm being slightly snarky....but not really.

3. Expect to hear your neighbors' snoring, talking on the phone, television, alarm clock, etc. I'm sure you are equally irritating to your neighbor. Thankfully, bathroom sounds were not discernible.

OVERALL:
I would recommend this place for families with kids. One does not visit St. Pete's Beach to sit in the hotel room.

First time coming here. It was advertised as a luxury 4 star resort with amenities. The rooms are very basic with the minimum kitchen utensils, some missing and not enough for a family of 4. The rooms suffer from being outdated and are shabby. The housekeeping is very substandard. We stayed here for a week and had our room cleaned at awkward times such as 4pm, 5pm and at 6pm we had to turn them away as we were getting ready for the evening meal. The 'cleaning' was a basic towel and toilet paper change. There is no hoovering or changing of bedsheets or making of beds. This resulted in the room quickly being infested with the local sandbugs called 'noseeums' which has meant the family are bitten at night. I have asked for the room to be hoovered but staff are nonchalant or do not seem to understand. You will find many staff on their phones in the quiet corners of the hotel. Guest support is minimal at best. The one day I did my laundry, there was only two washers and one dryer working on the two small, dirty laundry areas. Although the machines are free. I waited over an hour for an engineer to fix one dryer, despite asking three members of staff and calling reception.

The amenities advertised look good on the photos but in reality are old and fraying, such as the mini golf. The pools are small and overcrowded and the paddleboats are falling apart. There is one waterside on the beach but the advertised waterpark was nowhere to be seen. Only one day did we see a few inflated water cabanas.

The reception team are pleasant but keen to get you to upgrade your room upon arrival. If a basic room is not good enough and amenities poor, you have to ask yourself are you paying too much for substandard facilities in an aging hotel which is more of a budget motel.

The hotel location is perfect and the beach's close proximity is the only redeeming feature. The kids enjoyed the holiday and the smores and water tanks at Rumfish made it special. Although the partner hotel is still a motel style, staff there seem friendlier and we spent more evenings there as the live music was better.

I would not recommend the hotel but the location of St Petes beach was the only thing that saved our holiday from being a disastrous waste of money.

As the Director of Guest Satisfaction, please accept my apologies for the concerns you have brought to our attention. I have forwarded this to the Executive Housekeeper for further review of the lapse in service. With regards to the staff on their phones, I'm sure some of it may have been personal, however we have just implemented knew technologies for real time guest service needs and room status updates. Also seeing that your visit was earlier this month, all our paddleboats have been completely replaced with brand new ones. As well, the water park hours of operation have recently change to only on the weekends, as most children have returned to school. If I could be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. Thank you,

Terrible Housekeeping .We had to call every day of our 5 night stay to have our room serviced. A lot of lip service but no action. We even had to track down a housekeeping cart on our floor one day to gather our needs for the room including towels and wash cloths and coffee as well as toilet paper I will never go to Tradewinds again.

• Only half of your elevators are working, and you must wait for ages for one to arrive. Not ideal when you have lots of stuff to carry.
• The water is about to be turned off which means no toilets either. When I complained to the reception desk manager last night, he said “it would only be for a couple of hours” which is not what the letter said you poked through our room door, it stated 11am to 5 pm. When I challenged the desk guy, he said “I was splitting hairs”. He didn’t understand that a couple meant two. Just for information, we intend to use bottled water now just incase the domestic drinking water system hasn’t been disinfected or sterilised properly.
• No adult pool available, we had no knowledge of this when we booked. Interesting that the first picture of hotel survey was the adult pool. You should have shown the permitter hoarding around the pool along with construction site.
• The room AC sound like a jet engine when it runs, made worst by intermittent on and off – no sleep last night.
• Overall, not satisfied with the third world facilities. We have been staying at Trade Winds for many years and absolutely love the place. If we could leave tomorrow, we would, it is vastly overpriced, and I don’t like paying high end prices to live on a construction site with no running water.

I am writing this review to inform people about Rum Fish and Island Grand. First I would like to say the staff and management were very accommodating.
The rooms at Rum Fish need a total renovation. We didn't last there past 10pm. We had problems from the gecko like not being able to get into our room because the key did not work and security could not even get us in. When they finally put us in another room, it was awful! The tub was dirty and would not drain, the closet doors would not close and were rusted out. The air condition blowers were so loud. I could not believe the condition of the suite for a hefty price of $415.00 per night plus a $55 amenity fee!!!
They finally moved us next door to the Island Grand where it was so much better. The same suite at Island Grand was $200 more per night which thankfully they did not charge us for. However, we still continued to have problems. Starting with the most ridiculous soap and shampoo dispensers that an adult could not even squeeze out, let alone a child. All the dispensers were empty and even after we requested the maid service came to refill them they only filled a few. The coffee pods were never replaced either so we had to go all the way to the Starbucks kiosk in the lobby to get coffee. The safe deposit box was broke so we had to carry our valuables around with us the whole time. The air conditioner broke and that took some time to fix as well. The shower/tub never drained properly. The beds were 1/2' from the front door which I can't believe is allowed due to fire safety!
I get that you pay a premium for food at a hotel but this place is ridiculously expensive for very greasy food and very cheap alcohol. A bag of popcorn from the gift shop was $9 and 2 ice creams for the kids was almost $40!!!
I will say that the grounds are beautiful with many pools, activities for the kids, and the beach is very nice. So many sitting areas to lounge around the resort.
I just know the rooms need a total and complete renovation to get me to return.

Absolutely! We swim year round here. This hotel has a heated pool under roof as well as the outdoor pool, and there is a hot tub so the kids will go back and forth with those. The ocean is too warm and will still be in Novemeber. Enjoy your stay!
