Don’t believe the bad reviews. Went for New Years Eve and was upgraded to a very nice beach front suite. Room had newer furnishings, was very clean, Tommy Bahama bath items, coffee maker, microwave, everything we could need. The ocean view and access were great. Chairs and towels for the beach were provided a cute beach front bar was fun!……This hotel has the lowest price if you want to stay on the beach. The building is very old and rundown. The bathrooms are also in need of repair and updates. I would stay here again.

This is an interesting write. This is a 4 star hotel in a 1 or 2 star setting. First, the really great news. The staff is extremely nice and accommodating. The foyer appears new and the pool area is large and expansive with a nice adjaent bar and a fun place for drinks, dining and meeting guests. The restaurant looks new and serves both a high quality breakfast buffet and a sit down dinner. I enjoyed a fabulous salmon there.

Unfortunately it stops there. I would love to tell you the rest is just as great, but it's not. The hotel is relic from an era gone by. It's older than I am and I'm 63, with only facelifts and renovations of the forementioned areas. Ocean salts and father time have taken it's toll on this structure and it sorely shows. Hallways are rotted and creepy and the toilets and bath areas are extremely outdated. Looking up at the structure while laying at the pool will take your mind on a time warp that will bring memories of black & white TV's and Leave it to Beaver. While some may find that historic and nice, most will not. It's time has come and gone. It's located on a premier beach with the Ritz Carlton on one side and new housing developments on the other. It's crying out "tear me down and replace me with an extremely modern hotel". Given it's location, I'm sure there are plans in the works for that in the not to distant future. Wrapping this up I can say that we enjoyed our stay there but we will not be going back.

I saw that it was and older resort and was nervous booking it. But the view from my 2nd floor gulf view room was everything. The beds were comfortable and the room clean. The bathroom was average size. It needed more water pressure in the shower. The hallways looks very unkempt. The pool area was great as was the tiki bar. The bartender Eric was fantastic. The food and drink menu excellent. On the beach are free lounge chairs for guests. You have to get out there by 9:30 am to get a chair. The beach attendant Ryan rides around and will drill in a umbrella for you. A very nice guy. Bring your spf over 50 or more. The sun is on fire. Front desk was informative at check in with all the covid rules and procedures. There was no maid service, but what everything you put out your door, sheets or bath towels they put new ones out for you. Parking garage on site is very covient. We never
made it to the on site restaurant but we ordered to go from there. All in all it has everything you need for a nice comfortable beach
Vacation.

Once a time ago in 1953 The Sandcastle Hotel in Sarasota was born.

My Girlfriend and I went to The Sandcastle and it brought you back to the charm of the 1950’s. Yes the hotel needs major renovations but the people who work there; sincerely take pride in their job and show it.

At the Front Desk was Kathy and Mary who were so pleasant and accommodating to say the least. We only stayed one night for a business and pleasure getaway but it’s an experience.

The maintenance man Michael was very friendly and even helped my GF find the elevator and escorted her to our room. It a rare commodity to have hotel staff that were so genuine and friendly.

The rooms were simple, beds comfortable and in the bathroom tubes from Tommy Bahamas of shampoo, body cream, conditioner.

The pools were my favorite; one junior Olympic size pool that was clean and warm and another smaller pool that was warmer. The resort fee includes:
Beach chairs and umbrellas and towels for your stay. We did not go to the beach due to; poor weather. There was a cooler with unlimited bottles of water.

We did not know Leona Helmsley actually owned the hotel at one time and had 4 rooms converted into a townhouse with upstairs and downstairs. When she died, she gave her dog; the Hotel. Yes, her dog!

The restaurant was open for breakfast and pool bar had sandwiches that were great. All the staff wore masks and if you did not have one; they had one to give you.

Overall it was a throwback to times before and it was fun.

I’ve been coming to the sandcastle since I was a kid!
In its heyday it was a luxury resort. Not so much now and yes, the rates should reflect that but they don’t. I do agree with other reviewers that that photos are not completely accurate. BUT. It’s still my favorite place in the world.
If you want luxury, go next door to the Ritz. If you want a clean bed, a hot shower, and a relaxing getaway with no frills, this is the place to be. Check in and pre registration was a bit of a pain, but as with all businesses right now, they’re understaffed and overworked. Have some compassion and empathy ya bunch of Karens!
We were able to book with the “hot dates deal” that advertised $99 a night. We upgraded to a courtyard view room for $120 a night. We stayed from Monday through Friday, with our original check out day scheduled for Thursday but the front desk was able to extend our stay for one more day, in the same room for the same original rate.
Excellent service! We had to go to the lobby every other day to request towels and coffee and little things like that. Is it really a huge inconvenience? No. The beach was kept clean and the recreation people were working their butts off keeping up with the demand for chairs and umbrellas.
Every employee was extremely friendly and helpful. Especially the head engineer ( I wish I had got his name! )
He assured us that the property was not in danger of being demolished as the mote marine aquarium and lab biologists have confirmed that turtles are nesting on the corners of the property so no construction or demolition is in the near future. Just have some patience and be cool. You’re on vacation. Stop acting like this is the ritz and you’ll be happy.
The shuttle to the circle was so convenient and timely, we waited maybe 3 minutes from the time we called to be picked up from the circle, until the shuttle arrived.
We requested a microwave which was an additional $10 a night. We had 2 mini fridges and the ice machine in the laundry room kept our coolers and drinks happy and chilled.
The only issue with the room was the ac. We kept it on and as low as we could and it never seemed to get cool enough at night for us. It wasn’t uncomfortable but we like it chilly inside to take a break from the heat on the beach.
Take a step back, stop complaining about every little thing and appreciate the fact that you’re staying at what is now the oldest property on the island. It has history and character and I love it. You’re here for the beach, not white glove butler service and a mint on your pillow.
Thank you Sandcastle for another awesome vacation!
We’ll be back soon!
-The Hunter Family.

I would not recommend to anyone to stay here until the owners make needed maintenance & repairs to this property. I stayed at this resort a few years back and had a great stay, that was not the case with my recent stay from June 7th-10, 2021.

The check-in was at 3 pm, we had to wait another hour before our room was available. There were several guests placed in a similar situation. The lobby and restaurant area appeared to be the only part of the property that has been updated in years.

The air conditioning was not working. We had to purchase a fan to make the room tolerable. The carpet was filthy, walking on it made the bottom of my socks black. The air-conditioning filter was extremely dirty. The bathroom sink wasn't draining.

We spoke with the front desk about switching to another room but they insisted maintenance had to inspect the room. When maintenance arrived he just removed the sink plug and never returned. He said that there was a problem with the air conditioning for that entire wing. He could not say when it would be fixed.

The exterior areas of the property were in very poor condition, from peeling paint, torn carpet on stairs, walkways, rotted wood, uneven pavement, and loose deck boards. I heard several other guests comment about the trip hazards these conditions presented.

This lack of maintenance and improvements is unacceptable. Considering the prime location it is hard to understand why the owners would allow this property to get into such a state. I hope they start making improvements before it falls into further disrepair.

This is definitely a no frills resort which is completely fine with me. All I was looking for was a hot shower and a clean place to rest my head at night. However I could not even get clean washcloths. I stopped at the front desk 3 times in our 5 day 4 night stay and they never had any. I stopped the cleaning people and asked for some, one person didn’t have any and another lady had a bunch but would only spare 2. I called the front desk and the lady promised housekeeping would drop some off to our room but they never did. One person i spoke to said the hotel has no say on what they get from their third party vendor who delivers the clean linens. Management should maybe look into discussing this issue with their vendor. Service at the restaurant and bar was typically pretty good though the staff always seemed overwhelmed and rushed. Definitely not MN nice like we are used to. The room smelled absolutely awful like mildew, nothing dried in the room luckily I was able to get clean towels after a couple days. A few times we smelled people smoking cigarettes and weed from neighboring rooms and it was almost a relief to not smell the mildew; though I can’t say I was happy my kids were getting second hand smoke while they sleep. I’m also super covered in no-see-um bites from the beach but my kids don’t have one single bite.

This is by far the most disappointing motel stay I've ever experienced. The first room had ridiculously old mattresses that looked more like a sway-back horse than a bed and there was a poor whining dog in the room next door that would not be quiet. The staff were kind enough to move us to another room but this wasn't any better. This room smelled like the last guest smoked weed in here and there were ants EVERYWHERE in the bathroom and the sink and counter outside the bathroom. There was also someone else's used soap on the window ledge in the shower. If there had been another beach front room available we would have left. This place calls itself a resort but it is a trashy motel. When I told the front desk about the ants they said they'd have someone spray for ants while we were out.Foubt that happened as there more ants in the room when we got back than before we left.I went out my car and got disinfecting wipes to take care if the ants. Got better results than whatever they say they did. Shame on this company for how they misrepresented this property online. The rooms in the photos look nothing like the dingy dirty ant ridden rooms on site. The carpet is old and musty, the paint is peeling and mildewed in places. The whole place is disgusting. I will be reviewing this place accordingly on every site possible.

The worst part is the front desk staff tried but they are clearly understaffed for what is expected of them. Despite their kindness it was not enough to make up for generally awful this place is.

This was supposed to be a romantic little getaway for my husband's birthday. What a disappointment to have this special occasion ruined.

Open letter to Mike Walsh. President Ocean Properties

Hello Mike,
My Family and two others are 40 year loyal guests to the Lido Sandcastle Resort which you acquired in 2014. At different times, we each brought several other families with us who ended coming back year after year.

I understand your intent from the start was to demolish the existing resort and build something new. I get that you are entitled to make a profit.

This sir,  does not excuse you from offering my Family the very best experience you can as long as you are taking my hard earned money. You have an obligation to me and my Family .

Since you acquired this hotel, you immediately raised your rates and added a made up "resort fee" which we both know is nothing more than a greedy money grab. No one has ever been able to justify this fee to me. Yet, we continue come back year after year and pay your rates and fees. As I said we are loyal guests.

You cut your staff 80% - 90% by my estimation. In doing so, you turned your property into a filthy, smelly, dilapidated health hazard. You have effectively become the hotel slumlord of Sarasota. Worst of all, you cut basic services like housekeeping forcing us to go to your lobby for essentials like bath towels and toilet paper while still raising rates. I havent had my room freshened or disinfected in the 5 days we've been here. What kind of person does this to their guests?

Maybe, you just don't care if we ever come back. Maybe you just don't care if we visit your planned multimillion dollar resort or not.

We paid you hard earned money to decompress. We are half way through our vacation and with everything you put us through, I have more stress now than when I arrived.

You have a sign hanging outside of Ti office that says.."Our job is to give our gusts a reason to come back".. If this is true..YOU HAVE FAILED at your job and should be fired.

Walk a mile in your guest's shoes for a week. Perhaps you should bring your Family or your Parents here anonymously. Then reflect honestly about how your Family was treated and whether you came anywhere near getting the value you paid for and whether you are in the right business or not.

Based on everything we have experienced this week, I do not expect a response or a good will effort to make things right monetarily. My expectation is, if you are even still reading this, that you will simply shrug this off and continue your unfortunate practice of corporate greed.

I'll start with the good. Yes, it is right on the beachfront and with excellent views. The staff was amazing and accommodating. Very friendly and helpful. The coffee shop served excellent and large portion breakfast. Also friendly. They had 2 swimming pools but the beach is a must. Not crowded during our visit.
The bad: Very old and rundown. We felt comfortable with their Covid practices so decided it was easier to stay than to find another hotel. Housekeeping services being withheld but very easy to request fresh towels etc. The beachfront room that we had smelled slightly mildew, peeling paint on walls, sugar ants here and there, no lights on walkway to room and more. Definitely not a high end resort but definitely on the beach. We were told that the hotel will be razed and replaced with probably another high rise, looks like every other hotel. Sad since this hotel really had the beachy Florida feel.
Management apologized for our inconvenience and did make a fair adjustment to our bill.
Proceed at your own risk.
