We stayed for 1 night on 15th August. The room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The location was ideal, a short drive into Richmond but very very peaceful and quiet. Breakfast was lovely, lots of choice and the lady that looked after us was helpful suggesting things to do in the local area and helping us with where to book in for food.

We have recently spent a couple of nights at the hack and spade, on the first weekend of opening since lockdown.

We have stayed at the hack and spade several times before, and can quite honestly say it is one of the nicest, welcoming places we have ever stayed. The setting of this quaint b&b is beautiful, the dales in all its glory. It is only a short drive from Richmond, Northallerton and Durham, as well as market towns and villages such as leyburn and bedale.

Jane is the perfect host. Anything you need is taken care of, she always has time for a chat but isn’t overly intrusive and allows her guests the peace and privacy that her beautiful establishment offers.

The hack and spade is a home from home for us, our perfect getaway.

Highly highly recommended

We have just returned from a delightful short stay of four nights at The Hack & Spade.
Like lots of other businesses during Lockdown, Jane has found things a bit tough so we were pleased to learn that bookings are now picking up after we were the first back as restrictions are relaxed.
The charm and friendliness of The Hack & Spade is just as we remember. Our room was spotlessly clean and so very, very comfortable!
Jane is clearly taking on board the guidlines she has been given to ensure Social Diastancing etc.
With the excellent service provided we are confident that people - new and returners like us, will want to make The Hack & Spade one of their very favourite
B & Bs
Good luck Jane

An excellent stay. The rooms are delightful, carefully furnished and well presented, with fine countryside views. Location is superb - a few miles from the A1(M) and A66 but in Whashton, a really quiet hamlet. There is plenty to see and do in all directions from the village: Durham, the Yorskshire Dales, moorland walking, Mediaeval castles. Jane was most welcoming and her breakfasts were the best we have had for some time. Very good value for money.

Such a lovely establishment in a tiny village. Our room was spacious and the bathroom gorgeous with a walk in shower and a great bath for those that prefer a soak. Breakfast was so good and fresh. Orange juice and still water on the table ., without asking for.
Negatives . No pub in the village .... positives , thankfully, otherwise i am moving in.Just 10 minutes away from Richmond Town that takes you back you a bygone time .
It’s a must if you like Yorkshire and lovely peace and tranquility

We spent one night at The Hack & Spade. We arrived to a very warm welcome from Andy and were show into our room – a dream room (The Zetland). The room was not only spotless but it has a stylish and luxurious feel to it. As one can expect nothing was amiss. After settling in we went downstairs for what was a most enjoyable dinner prepared by Jane. After a very restful night we woke up the next morning to the beauty that the Yorkshire countryside has to offer on a glorious day of sunshine. We had a superb breakfast – also prepared by Jane and her team. Andy then kindly gave us hints on the scenic route to take as we travelled towards our next destination. We had a wonderful stay at the Hack & Spade and could not recommend it more. Andy and Jane are both great hosts and it feels like we have known them for a long time. It all just passed to quickly. Pity it was only one night! Have to return…

We visited the Hack and Spade for my granddaughters wedding function and were pleasantly surprised to find it is such a fantastic place, a very warm and friendly welcome from Andy and Jane set the stall out what I can only describe as the perfect day! The food was excellent and the room in which we stayed, The Butler Suite, was superb to say the least, the breakfast the following morning was second to none ( the black pudding was gorgeous) and I guess you will realise by this review that I can not recommend it highly enough, thank you again Andy and Jane for helping to make it a day we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

Our son and his partner (now wife) decided they would like a small informal wedding and chose the Hack and Spade for their wedding meal. It was perfect from start to finish. Jane and her husband were so very kind and our every wish was catered for. The restaurant was set out beautifully for our arrival and the atmosphere was one of welcome and kindness. The meal was splendid and couldn't be faulted. Top quality ingredients cooked very well indeed and presented so nicely. It was such a special evening and one I will never forget.

I didn't stay overnight but my son and his wife did as did some of the guests. The rooms were absolutely gorgeous. I would say the best I have seen. Up with the top quality hotels. Immaculately presented with wonderful furnishings and the bathrooms were out of this world!! Every comfort is taken care of. You will not be disappointed if you stay here. You will love it and want to return and return.

After a couple of years closed,my Wife and I enjoyed a succulent steak here, we used to visit unitl it closed and are pleased to see that the atmosphere is as good as if not better, fully refurbished throughout but in a very tasteful manner, the Owner/Chef takes a pride in the dishes which she produces. We will certainly return.
