The Cypress Hills rise gently, climbing 600 metres above the surrounding prairies. The Hills have a unique climate and mix of forests, wetlands and grasslands. This high plateau is home to an astonishing diversity of plants and animals. Most facilities in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park-Alberta are concentrated along the south shore of Elkwater Lake in the Elkwater townsite. The year-round Visitor Centre is located in Elkwater, as are many special facilities. There are several campgrounds in the park plus nearby accommodation and attractions. Lakes and trails and watchable wildlife offer lots of great recreational opportunities.

Detailed Reviews
We loved this site. It was quiet, dark and interesting. Lots of deer. Nice hikes. Great views. We went late in the year so it was not busy. Watch out for the GPS address. The address on the web led us to a field. So so wifi.

This is a lovely place. Cute little village with a beautiful lake, nice hiking trails. We Started an 8km hike then veered off towards the lake, and hike down to Elkwater Lake. Lovely views and we stayed at the lake for a picnic and nap!

There are many types of campground places to stay - some with hookups and some with nothing. We stayed where there was power and it was very shady and roomy. The bathrooms are kept very clean and there are showers. Entire park is very clean and well maintained. If you camp where there is no hookups then you will be roughing it a bit more with just toilets. Those sites are very nice also, as we have stayed there last year. The lake and beach are refreshing, mini golf is free, kayaks, etc, to rent and there are many sights to see in and around the area. Just go to the great visitor center to learn more. The only thing you need to be aware of and use common sense is that there are cougars in the area so keep your dog food and the pet itself inside at night. Don't walk alone, especially at night and make lots of noise on the trails. I look forward to camping out here every year. The rangers and staff are very nice.

Trailer in Tow, with food n drink and a fabulous weather forecast.
Campsite is well laid out and busy for the last weekend in the calendar, so we were fortunate to get a slot.
Kids and adults alike had a brilliant time, the wether brought everyone out and the children all had a ball. The walk along the water front as well a trip on the lake most memorable for all.
Looking forward to next visit with the Grandchildren

At Elkwater lake there are 5 campgrounds all connected. Old baldy, Elkwater, Ferguson etc
Some of the camp sites are more open some have more trees and therefore more shade. Look at the photos on the website carefully for your optimum spot. There are definitely lots of different types of spots available. It's does get quite hot so either book shade or bring your own umbrellas/awnings...
Large kids playground in Elkwater campground with open area, horseshoes and small basketball pad and hoop.
Pleasantly surprised by showers and toilet facilities (flushable) everything is very clean and better than the norm.
Lake has boat launch, canoeing, mini put golfing, small beach area. Washrooms at lake have change area. Ice cream vendor by lake.
There is a great visitors center (interactive things for kids) with a small general store connected to a small restaurant next door. Food is excellent. Small gas station in the townsite with coffee shop and bar. Firewood available at both general store and gas station.
Very family friendly area, nice helpful staff. Will definitely return.

The Cypress Park is still managed by Alberta Parks and the result is evident. The landscaping is pristine, the showers and washrooms some of the cleanest we have ever seen and the campsites large and well kept. There are several campgrounds; some close to the village and others further up in the forest.
Lots to do for families

Elk water is a beautiful place to go and enjoy the outdoors. I enjoys getting out there all year round. In the summer time I enjoy the lakes for fishing and SUP, we also hike and ride the numerous trails throughout the park. The winter is when I really enjoy the park. From skating on their ice loop to snowshoe and cross country skiing, and ice fishing.
Elk water is a 45 minute drive form Medicine Hat and is well worth the travel. The tourist centre rents out equipment and will go above and beyond to help you with your trip.

We were camping on this campground for a weekend get away (2 nights) and even if we have to change sites because they didn't have a spot in the serviced area for two nights still I rate this campground top star.
We love the area because of what it offers: a lake with the promenade, marina, beach, kayaks & paddleboard rentals, ice-cream, a nice visitor center / museum, an amphitheater with Saturday free movie, two restaurants (we haven't been to them but still there) and the forested hills with tons of hiking trails. The campground is very well managed with clean washrooms and huge lots. Lots of shade in the serviced areas and the un-serviced ones.

I have visited Cypress Hills IPP a few times, but this time I brought my students and signed up for some sessions with a guide. The Geocache and the Trees & Forests lessons were a huge hit! Our guide Chris was amazing and so helpful. The kids had a great time and learned so much. The scenery was fantastic, and the best part is that you can visit at any time even without a guide! Such a beautiful provincial park!

We did a family camping trip and brought our daughter's friend along. This was her first camping trip. We prefer more private, remote camping. Being non smokers, cigarettes or otherwise, there is an impact when being close to neighbours if they have different values. Also, the quiet period is per the honour system and not enforced, so that can be problematic. Those two items are why 4 out of 5 stars. So of course, with such a rating we would return again in the future.

There is a trail from Old Baldy Campground winding up and down, through many environments, steep drop offs into the forest, ending up at the Horseshoe Lookout. Likely to,see deer, rabbit, squirrels, lucky if you see a cougar. Takes about an hour uphill. The views as you may know are tremendous from the plateau.
The fishing there is good. In elk water there is pike, they are no monsters but they bite and are keepers. The limit size here is smaller then other lakes. If you are a fly fisher than you can hit up two lakes in the park, Resser and spruce coulee, that are stocked and I have had great luck catching in. These two don't allow gas motors. In August you will see tons of people shore casting at the dams in these lakes.
The tourist centre is a great place to get info.
