When we checked into the hotel Nicole T was very helpful and very informational about where to go and what to do around the hotel. The hotel is in an excellent location and walking distance from every store you can think of and all the foods of all kinds of varieties that you would want to eat. We had a room on the 21st floor on the end which had a separate bathroom with a large tub and large shower. Overall, this was a great hotel to spend four nights and I want to come back in the summertime when it's not so cold.

Thompson Chicago has become one of my favorite hotels in the US. The property's biggest asset is the main-on-main Gold Coast location. It is close walking distance to so much (Magnificent Mile, Oak Street, Division Street, countless restaurants), and an easy Taxi or Uber ride to Lincoln Park or the Loop. The property provides excellent value for World of Hyatt Globalist Members, with free overnight parking ($75 value) with point redemption or free night rewards, and free breakfast for two adults and two kids. The breakfast situation may change however since Nico is scheduled to be replaced by Tavern on Rush beginning around Q1 2024. The hotel is routinely available for under $200 USD per night and the staff is always consistently helpful, friendly, and overall solid. The rooms are well appointed and unique with corner junior suites having a unique, curved layout.

Our stay was a points redemption. Our standard room was generously sized and looked out over the front of the hotel which was nice. The room had lovely hardwood flooring, a desk near the windows, an L shaped couch and a very spacious bathroom with a pocket door and an open no-door style shower. The rainfall shower also had a wand available. Thanks to it's longer hallway like layout, this shower didn't send water into the other parts of the bathroom in the way that Hyatt Place showers often do.

Overall this was a well run, well thought out hotel. Our pocket door on the bathroom had to be opened carefully or it would get out of alignment or something and whack into something on the internal track causing a loud bang and requiring you to re-close and re-open the door carefully. The clock radio wasn't working, probably not plugged in at the wall but it was hard to get to and I didn't care enough to investigate or request help.

The TV overall worked very well and had a nice fast responsive guide and even a sleeker more polished remote than most hotels. I do wish they provided a good way to plug an HDMI device into it. Their custom remote doesn't include the ability to change inputs. I had to unplug the hotel's custom TV service HDMI cable to get my laptop plugged in but the volume on the TV is locked at 100% and the remote actually controls the volume from the hotel TV system side. So I had to be very careful to turn my laptop volume way down. Basically something 99% of guests won't ever care about.

The hotel location is good IF you want to be in the Gold Coast. I'd never spent any time in the Gold Coast area before and while clean and bustling, it felt pretty touristy. Also, there isn't an L stop particularly close to the hotel meaning quite a bit of walking just to get started going anywhere around town.

Overall a very strong showing.

I recently stayed at Thompson Chicago with my family, and unfortunately, our experience was far from ideal. While the hotel has some good points, it falls short in key areas, especially for families with young children.

The most alarming incident was when my son cut the back of his head on the shower door handle. This was a serious safety concern that could have been much worse. I urge the management to address this issue immediately to prevent future accidents.

We booked a junior suite, expecting a comfortable and spacious area for our family. However, the layout was very open and not suitable for kids. The lack of separation between the sleeping and living areas made it difficult to manage our space, and the open design posed several hazards for our active child.

While the hotel does have some positives—such as its location and decor—it is clear that it is not designed with families in mind. If you are traveling with children, I would recommend looking elsewhere for accommodations that are safer and more accommodating to family needs.

Thompson Chicago might be a decent choice for solo travelers or couples, but I cannot recommend it for families with young children due to safety concerns and limited space in the suites.

This is a fine place to stay if you are in Chicago. You can walk to any of the Gold Coast restaurants and bars with ease. They seem to rely on their location to mask their average service, lack of on-site restaurant and laughable "morning offerings." We understood that the restaurant was being renovated (after we booked), but there should have been more of an effort to justify the full priced room despite the renovation and lack of offerings. In addition, our in-room Nespresso machine was broke, and we were forced to buy 2 cups of regular drip coffee for an additional charge of $12. This should have been comped in my opinion. Im sure this is not a typical experience, or at least I hope not.

This place is a joke. I check in, it’s late and I’m tired. I unpack and get ready for bed, only to find my bed has not been made properly. It was missing the sheets between the mattress and the duvet/comforter. Nasty! I call down to the front desk to advise them of the issue and they say they’ll send housekeeping up right away to fix the problem. After about 20 minutes housekeeping shows up and hands me sheets and leaves without saying a word, so I had the privilege of making my own bed at the hotel…at 11pm. Thanks, Thompson. Nice to see you keeping it classy.

Other issues during this stay included: Requested feather-free bedding due to a dust allergy and although the system indicated that the request was accommodated, it wasn’t. I also requested a quiet room and am placed immediately across from the elevator. And finally, I’m a Hyatt globalist (ie frequent customer of Hyatt) and one of the perks is a suite upgrade upon availability at check-in. Suites were showing available on the app yet I was told no suites were available. The suite upgrade issue is a minor inconvenience, but when taken in totality this place is just plain terrible. Honestly, I had a better experience at a Hyatt place in rural North Carolina last week.

Lovely hotel minus the stained couch in my room & lack of a fitted sheet (they just laid a regular sheet over the mattress).

The front desk staff was extremely dismissive & rude. I had to wait an hour past check in time & was offered nothing.

When I asked for a late check out i was told no. Then after I asked for some form of compensation I was given a credit of $25 for food.

My food was $29 & ended up being $47. I mentioned my credit & it was taken down to $40. I’m no math whiz but that doesn’t add up.

The next morning a dog barking woke me up, I called the front desk & they said they’d take care of it. An hour later, it was still barking. I call again & was told the owner was on their way back….

Again I asked for an hour later to check out & was denied.

I get a room downtown every month & they win the prize for rudest Hotel staff I’ve encountered.

It really is too bad given how nice the hotel is.

Oh well!

Dear Barrett Blackman; Thank you for choosing Thompson Chicago for your recent stay in Chicago. We appreciate the time you took to complete a survey, and the time you took to speak with me via telephone. Your feedback is very valuable and helps us review and improve our services. I was happy to learn from the front desk team that they in fact upgraded you to a junior suite and offered a $25 food & beverage credit at check -in, as this was unfortunately delayed by ½ hour. As the room you occupied was reserved for the next guest, we were only able to offer a 1 hour late check out. You did receive a full credit for your in room dining order and other fees. Your comments have been forwarded to housekeeping and we truly apologize for the barking dog that woke you up. We are sorry that you were not completely satisfied. We appreciate you sharing your experience so that we may share with the team.

Thompson Chicago by Hyatt is my home away from home when I visit Chicago.

The location is perfect because it's within walking distance of so many cool places to visit as well as access to public transportation. This is a very safe area and I felt comfortable walking around at night with my young daughter.

The Thompson staff was extremely hospitable and accommodating. I consider all of them my family now.

At check-in, my new cousin Alex G.(the Blonde Bomb Shell), greeted us with the most amazing energy and made sure we were able to check-in early given our long night of travel. Every time he saw us he'd ask us how our trip was going and if he could help with anything. Chef's kiss...top tier hospitality!

The rooms are a good size, the beds are extremely comfortable, and the hot water never ran out during our showers. (That's important...no?)

The restaurant was under construction during our stay, so I cant comment on that. During thus time, the hotel staff did have a grab and go spot in the lobby to get coffee, bakery delights, snacks, and adult beverages. Breakfast could be ordered via room service.

All in all...I would highly recommend anyone stay here.

If what you’re looking for are accommodations with warped cheap laminate flooring, water damaged walls with mold and smeared paint, bugs in the baseboards, and loud popping from inside the walls- this is your place! You can have a suite that reminds you of a cheap air bnb in the city for the price of a premium hotel. But here you get the bonus of completely being dismissed by in person staff rather than communicating through an app.
You can also push your cart of luggage to your room yourself when you arrive late in the evening.

We’ve stayed here many times over the years and it’s been declining steadily- I think we may be at the bottom for the class of hotel it claims to be.

We stayed downtown for a night for my wife's birthday. The Thompson is well situated on Rush across the street from Gibsons and The Original Pancake House. It is also right at the top of Michigan Ave. The staff were nice as was the hotel. We had a high corner room that was huge with lots of windows. While very comfortable (and would return without hesitation) the room was showing a bit of wear and tear. It was $75 to park the car at the hotel but across street, just east of the pancake house, there is a garage that is only $40 for 24 hours. ($40 is ridiculous but not $75). On a side note, I was shocked at how empty Chicago was. It was warm, perfect walking weather. The only store I saw ANY sale in was a candy store on Michigan Ave, no joking. Chicago will not survive if this continues. While I said the staff were nice, and they were, the kid at the door would be more helpful if he was not glued to his phone.
