Attended a wedding on the Saturday. Fabulous Hotel, stayed for two nights, the wedding itself was brilliant , lovely spacious function venue, the meal itself consisted of chicken vol au vent, veg soup, beff followed by Creme brûlée and tea/coffee , the breakfast on both mornings was very good. Staff were very courteous and friendly , will definitely return 10/10

We had booked a two day break away during the Covid-19 time that we were permitted to travel around Ireland. All precautions were taken by the hotel, sanitiser at the entrance, masks to be worn throughout the hotel. At table, when sitting, masks could be removed.
We had a room at the back on 3rd floor and there were no frills like cushions and throws which is understandable during this time. The web site suggested one could take away any half used items! The beds were very comfortable and had duvets on them. We did not expect that the beds would be made during our stay, but they were.
When we arrived we had the afternoon tea in the Palm Court which we had pre-booked. We shared one tea with three of us which was permitted, each getting a pot of whatever tea one requested. There was plenty for us.
We had booked the tasting menu for that night and for each meal we had to specify the time we wanted to eat. The meal was delicious with mini portions and it took us three hours to get through the menu. All the staff wore either face shields or masks while serving. I had two glasses of wine and a coffee after the meal and these were charged separately.
For breakfast we had booked 9.30 a.m. and had to wait in the hall for about 5 minutes for a table along with several other groups. We had a menu and the waitress took our orders and brought us more toast when asked. We were able to change what we ate from the menu, making our own choice. Breakfast was in the main dining room.
I had a nice walk down to the lake through woods, and then we also had a walk around the outside of the castle. Lots of lawns and just a flower border on one side. Trees all around and a long drive up with gates on the road.
We did not use the spa or go to the bars during our stay. We visited a friend who lived nearby for a meal on the second evening we were there. We drove around the area and visited Turlough O'Carolan's grave and Lough Key Forest Park.
The staff were efficient and friendly and we did not make contact with other guests, particularly in the lifts and reception areas. We felt safe there.
We received a voucher for €50 on leaving valid to the end of the year and would love to use it, but currently we are in lockdown not permitted to travel outside our county.
I would certainly recommend this castle for a stay.

Just completed my second visit to this superb Castle retreat.
Covid had undoubtedly quelled the real essence of the trip as the spa remained closed however the tranquility of the setting and the quality of the staff added enough mitigation to make the 2.5 hour journey worthwhile.
Upon arrival the imposing building set on the site of some beautifully manicured grounds and close by the expansive lake immediately helped me pressed the reset button.
All the chaos of living through a pandemic and a long furlough was sidelined in favour of 3 days of luxury and laziness.
Night one I travelled to nearby Carrick on Shannon (25 min drive) for a meal out (see separate review) taking time to admire Keadew one of Irelands best kept tidy towns. It was in your face spotless.
Breakfast day 2 was the first indication of different times.
I had to avail of room service as distancing had reduced restaurant capacity and I had missed the cut.
The fry up was extensive and the plate overflowed with quality local produce.
The extra time it took to get to the room meant the plates and food were like warm at best, but this didn't distract from what was a superb start to the day.

On evening two I ate in the drawing room.
I had the Mexican burger with a side of chips and salad.
The meal was quite tasty and fulfilling and great value for money. However if I'd make one change it would be to the portion of chicken.
I'd opt for a full fillet battered or breaded and serve it with fresh cut chips instead of what appeared to be mass produced a la cash n carry.
I would be prepared to pay a little more for this.

Breakfast on day 3 was excellent. A window seat overlooking the superb grounds.
Hot tasty and fresh I could not fault it.
The service was the big tick.
Attentive but not Ott.

The area has lots to do if you like water sports and sight seeing. However at this point in time a lot of these attractions were still locked down.

By the time I packed my bags I did not want to leave. A good sign by anyone's book.

I will return again hopefully when normality returns.

If your looking for a quiet break at a good price then try the self-catering option for Kilronan Castle. I understand most of the houses have recently been sold off and to be fair they are showing their age with massive creaking floorboards, cracked floors, etc..but you really have to consider the price point and the access to the grounds which are Immaculate and the Castle itself including the Restaurants, Dungeon Bar, Pool and Gym etc. On a good day it's difficult not to simply relax. We stayed for two nights last week 29th & 30th August 2021 and really enjoyed it.

We had the afternoon tea on our first afternoon which needs some thought as its now very outdated compared to any other venue we have stayed recently, its not expensive but its very 'poor value for money' given the quality and range of the food provided, your chef should google LA MON outside Belfast, Westin in Dublin and copy the menus but the staff (Aoife in particular) were very kind and thoughtful and thats the key ingredient in having a relaxing break.

I note some people complain about the main swimming pool and a large number of lights are faulty in the pool and when you dive the visibility is almost zero which is troubling...you may rightly ask what’s the problem with the filtration system and i can’t answer that but they probably should look at it quickly, they have removed all the seats/loungers and the steam room and sauna show ‘OUT OF ORDER’ they are not out of order they are closed due to COVID and it should say this on the door not tell an incorrect story as people were still using them despite the signs. Showers and changing rooms need an uplift, i noted the soap dispenser in one of the public showers had collapsed off the wall but a very quick PPM and Building fabric review will sort these very minor issues out. Go and have a good time, overlook the minor building issues and have a laugh with your friends/partner/fwb and enjoy it.

Booked 3 nights in the King Tenison Suite for an anniversary. Great size room but the furniture, albeit antique, has taken a bit of a beating over the years. The bathroom could do with re-grouting and better cleaning around the toilet would not go a miss, particularly the areas you see when you are lying in the bathtub
On a positive note the staff were very welcoming, particularly the evening waiters in the restaurant. We availed of two really nice tasting menus, which varied each night. Breakfasts were also fine, but I suspect were more enjoyable as buffets in the pre-covid era.
A big disappointment was to arrive and find the spa almost fully booked out. You could get 30 mins here and there but we could get nothing we wanted together. You clearly have to compete with those local regular spa users and those staying in the holiday cottages and given it had just opened I suspect slots were at a premium. Nevertheless we should have been warned, particularly as we had booked a suite for 3 days and it was highly likely that the spa would be part of the attraction for us choosing the hotel.

We've recently returned from few nights in Kilronan which was enjoyable.
Pros: very relaxing location. Good size room. Good base for travelling around, food was fantastic. Breakfast was delicious, fresh and great portions. Rooms were at a lovely temp for a hotel and not too hot. Nice walk ways around the hotel.

Cons- the organisation of the hotel felt very restricted. Obviously we are fully conscious about covid and the additional measures that need to be implemented but it was very restricted. If you wanted a drink during the day,the dungeon bar didn't open until 4pm and some days, the drawing room was fully booked for afternoon tea meaning you have no where to go (an issue when the hotel is in a remote location) .
While the standard of food is excellent, the menu is limited. No specials etc & when you were there for a few days it gets repetitive. There is a beautiful restaurant in the hotel but it only serves the 6 course tasting menu which we did once but it's not something you would do every night.
Service was a little frustrating at times. Simple things like waiters not asking if you wanted ketchup etc, forgetting to bring water etc meant delays which could be avoided & it would be less work for them. These are simple points but really impact on the overall break.
Another simple point was cleaning the hand sanitisation station at the front door which was overflowing and dripping all over the floor. Same situation at the hand sanitisation units at the lifts. Generally a grubby impression.
Overall, the hotel needs a deep clean, layers of dust on the skirting boards in the foyer and around the base of the bar in the drawing room etc etc.
We had the tasting menu in the restaurant which was fantastic. Unfortunately it was tainted by a waiter speaking negatively to others about how tips were divided up in the hotel & advising people to avoid the hospitality sector.

**One major point of concern for us was that at every meal, the menu was left on top of the side plate & knife. I don't think this is acceptable during normal times, not alone during a pandemic. Menus were not sanitised after guests ordering.

Thank you a_tiger_2020 for taking the time to provide us with your valued feedback, we appreciate you taking the time to do so. I have forwarded your points to all of the relevant department managers so that they can look into and implement any actions or training needed. For dining options we do run an extensive casual dining menu from 12pm - 9pm along with a lovely Afternoon Tea menu and we are currently running a fabulous 6 course tasting menu in the fine dining Douglas Hyde Restaurant, which we feel offers plenty of choice for guests given the current situation. However thank you for the feedback we I will be sure to pass that onto the chef. I do apologies if this tarnished your stay in any way as we would be delighted to welcome you back again. Kindest Regards Samantha

We went to Kilronan for a few days gate-away and it was one of the best short trips in a long time. We booked on of the Castle Suites. The bathroom was not too big, but the room itself was huge. The hotel if absolutely majestic and luxurious and all the staff was super nice and helpful. We can wholeheartedly recommend it for a romantic break, celebrations or wedding.

As they only reopened few weeks before our visit, yo could tell they spent a lot of time on cleaning the whole place as it was absolutely spotless. Because of Covid we were offered a free room service breakfast and we were happy to accept that. The food was very good, all fresh and tasty. It was a real pleasure to use the hotel's spa amenities although the swimming pool was packed at the time we have our slot booked so we decided to skip that part and enjoy the almost empty, quiet and super clean thermal suite. The hotel itself is located beside the lake with many walking routes in a beautiful location with a big chance to see a local wildlife. We have already book another stay in November.

Just back from a 2 night stay in the wonderful Kilronan Castle in north Roscommon. Firstly in these times its important to not that the venue fully adheres to Covid-19 precautions. In advance we were contacted re booking of breakfast and dinner times and also pool / leisure facility slots. Hand sanitisers were locates all over the building and a one way system was in operation. None of these precautions in anyway took away from the splendor of the setting. We were a party of 4 including 2 kids (12 and 14 years old) and we booked a family room. The room we got was by far and away the best laid our family room we have ever stayed in. Spacious with comfortable chairs to relax in and enjoy the views and clean and modern bathroom. We had dinner there on one night and the food was excellent however it was the Breakfast menu that really stole the show. Huge choice and all tastes catered for. Service was very efficient without being intrusive which was great. All throughout the facility the staff were so friendly and that really made it for us. I would highly recommend Kilronan as a place for a couples getaway and also for a family break. Loads to do in the surrounding area from Lough Key to the Arigna Mining Experience to watersports and golf.

Beautiful castle hotel with impeccable service. We stayed there for one night during a little 2,5-day round-trip in Ireland and were surprised by the quality of this hotel. Everything was great, from staff to scenery, but the food in the restaurant was beyond anything we'd expected. We ate a 3-course meal which was just perfect in any way. Perfectly cooked, delicious complimentary flavors, superb presentation and a waiter who was both witty and knowledgeable.
The price was also nice, and great value for money. We will return if we get the chance, but then to stay for more than one night!

Driving up to the gorgeous property, we were very excited for our stay.
The room was nicely appointed, but we noticed immediately that the ceiling had a slow drip of what was presumably rainwater. There was a water stain on the ceiling, so the property had to be aware this was not new. The carpet was wet, but putting a towel diminished the water drip sound.
At dinner, the service was agonizing slow. We waited 25 minutes for our waiter to approach our table, even though there were only 3 other tables with diners. He spent that time augmenting or replacing their silverware and discussing dessert options.
The grounds are lovely with some nice options for walking around a lake.
A pretty hotel, but between the room maintenance and dinner service, can’t recommend a stay here.

No. They do not have fridges in the King Castle Rooms but they do have fridges in the bedroom suites. The bedroom suites are magnificent with four poster beds, stand alone baths and wonderful views over the grounds and lake.
