It wasn’t a great start when no one was available to check us in. The exterior is lovely, the interior is tired and in need of extensive renovation. The staff were unhelpful, the room was as hot as hell with no air conditioning, in the restaurant we were served a gin a pint glass as they had no other clean glasses. The hotel and restaurant were not full and there were 3 glasses on our table which could have been washed!

Arrived early check in at 12, check in nice and simple was told were bridal suite was, first entering was impressed, large 4 poster bed nice large lounge area with large TV, huge bathroom with shower and jacuzzi bath with TV above, then started looking more closely the tiles in bathroom floor were missing lots of grout, which cud be a hazard if someone catches there foot on edge of tile, this really does need addressing, also paintwork cud do with touching up in places in bathroom too, wen you are paying alot of money for this room it really does need to be of a decent standard. Also I read in previous comments the lights around the mirror in the bathroom not working these still don't work which need doing, I mentioned this to member of staff when we left. The bed was comfortable, the sofas comfy too, cud do with more milk for coffee as only had 4 little pots of milk and you use 2 in 1 cup of coffee, afternoon tea was nice sat in grounds in the sunshine, we had spa from 3-4 which was nice then a back massage which was lovely and relaxing, then spa from 5-6, good facilities in the spa. Evening meal, was superb cudnt fault it well done chef, starter, main and dessert cooked to perfection. Only thing I would say is, there does need to be a bit more variety for vegetarians as there was only 2 options as a main and not much for starters, but overall the quality of food was great. Breakfast, we had this in our room, there is a tray service of £5, which is worth having if you don't want the hassle getting ready to go downstairs to eat. Lovely breakfast, croissant, fruit salad and hot breakfast with toast, apple juice and coffee, again only gripe is they cud do with a jug of milk rather then only a couple of milk containers as milk doesn't go far enough for coffee. Overall had a lovely time here if they could address the issues as mentioned above this would of been a amazing review instead of a very good review.

Arrived here with my family after a 6 hour drive in the traffic and heat from Cornwall,First impression was it looks a lovely place.on entering reception no one was visible to book us in,we waited a good 5 minutes before I looked in the back of reception and saw a young lady who was bust texting her friend,oh I didn’t see you there ,she said,no problem, can we book in please as we are booked into the restaurant at 1830 and don’t want to be late,eh,no,I can’t book you in and I don’t know where the person who can has gone...so,we went into the restaurant, ordered drinks from a very nice lady, and had a look at the menu, not a great choice but we were all hungry, after our first round of g/t we ordered a second..and this is where I nearly fell off the chair, mine came in a pint pot as they had ran out on gin glasses..I looked around and saw about 8 people in the restaurant,I was with family so I didn’t want to complain,we all just laughed at the “ faulty Towers “ situation,so,on to the room,I’ve never slept in a sauna before but that is what the very small room resembled, the curtain in the shower was half on half off( I sorted this) the fly’s in the lamp shade though sadly departed were numerous and the view from our room 221..was interesting to say the least,I will never forget being served a G/T in a pint glass and will never ever visit this very basic hotel again...awful.

I’ve mixed feelings about our stay here. We had 2 nights in the bridal suite. Although it was not our wedding if this had been my bridal suite I’d have been bitterly disappointed. The room was a good size and the bed was comfortable. The room was very old fashioned and chintzy and really could’ve done with a lick of paint and a deep clean. There were a lot of fake floral arrangements around the room which were coated in dust and the cleaning on the whole left a lot to be desired. The draws were full of hairs and unuseable they clearly hadn’t been checked and the lamps were filthy. We had a spotlight mirror in the bathroom that worked on a sensor it wasn’t working so clearly hadn’t been checked. We did report it within about an hour after our arrival and asked for it to be fixed whilst we were at the spa but never heard anything back from the hotel and it wasn’t fixed. It would appear from previous reviews this hasn’t been fixed since last year or continues to not work. There is NO window nor any extractor fan in the bathroom. Not nice. The tiles were cracked and were in desperate need of regrouting. There was a faint smell of dampness & sourness in the room on arrival even though the windows were open. There were some rather suspect marks on the floor around the toilet. We had to ask for extra tissues and toilet roll as these supplies had not been checked prior to our arrival. Having searched high and low we could not find the remote control for the television. We were greatly disturbed by noise from the room above with heavy feet so some reason constantly sounding on the ceiling so much for peace and quiet. We were also disappointed on arrival in the spa. We had pre booked a slot as required from 3-5 pm. We arrived at 3.10 pm there were NO beds either inside or outside to sit on there were clearly far too many people in the spa for the facilities DESPITE the apparent restrictions. I was told in the past hour 13 people had arrived for the 3-5 pm slot so what time did they actually arrive? I was also told there were day spa customers and twilight spa customers as well and there were always not enough beds to go round. Well that was hardly comforting. There were also towels just left on unoccupied beds. I was told the spa don’t manage this. I was also told people would be moved on after their allotted slots finished this never happened. We were lucky enough to get some beds after about 30 mins when someone actually left. Other beds with towels on were just left unoccupied for the entirely of our stay in the spa. In the end I removed the towels myself as other people were wanting to use the beds who had been stuck outside and it started to rain. As a customer I shouldn’t have had to do this. The spa staff seemed uninterested in the fact that in theory we would have been unable to use the pool/spa facilities which we had paid extra for during our whole 2 hour slot. In the end we stayed over 2 1/2 hours as I figured we’d lost 30 minutes anyway. We were not asked to leave when our slot was up neither was anyone else. It seems the so called pre booked slots were fictitious. The pool was lovely but the poolside was incredibly slippy and dangerous. There were no restrictions on the hot tub so people piled in. There were soggy wet tissues left on the side. These same tissues were there on the second day again indicative that the jacuzzi area had NOT been cleaned. I never once saw a staff member do any cleaning at all in the spa/pool area. We did have some treatments which were excellent. Thank you to Zoe. The best point about the hotel was the restaurant. It was lovely with tables well spaced out and the food was fantastic really good. It was nice to sit in the bar area after dinner but sadly many of the communal areas and the furniture were absolutely filthy. See pictures. The dirty looking brown carpet that pervades the whole of the hotel was exactly that filthy in places and had really seen better days along with scuffed paint and dirty doors and skirting boards. In these COVID times the levels of cleanliness in the hotel were really not up to standard. The hotel has a policy of asking guests to use their own toilet in their room rather than the general hotel ones. It soon became clear that this was an excuse simply not to clean them. They were disgusting when used one night. I did report this but I shouldn’t have to. The cream tea included in our package wasn’t worth it. I was told by reception I didn’t need to book this. We had ours about 3 pm returning from a trip out and were provided with two scones so one each with currants in something I disliked. I asked for a plain scone and was told these were given on a first come first served basis. First I’d heard of this! Then we were told if we’d booked our cream tea we’d have been given a choice! They then offered some cakes which are usually serviced with the £18.50 cream tea so I agreed. About 15 minutes later by which time my husband had eaten his scone the 2 smallest pieces of cake EVER arrived then the waitress actually I kid you not went to take away the second scone! I asked for some more tea as ours was stewed by then which did arrive but no more 50p size cake arrived. The tea was cheap and tasteless. Overall I’m afraid this hotel did not live up to its 4 star rating NOR did it live up to its own mission statement on their own hotel website. The spa facilities and the restaurant are what makes this hotel but honestly everything else about it let’s it down. For all those reasons although we enjoyed our stay overall (we needed a break) I didn’t feel we got what we had paid for (over £630) and I wouldn’t be prepared to return until this place had really upped its game within the actual, hotel itself and sorted out their cleaning.

We booked a dinner, bed, breakfast and spa day via spabreaks.com. We stayed in an executive double which was nice and clean, but we could hear absolutely everything in the corridors outside (other guests talking, slamming doors etc) and rooms near to us. If I’m being picky, the decorative cushions on the bed were really tatty, almost threadbare, probably would have been best to leave them off altogether. The grounds are beautiful and we had lunch outside, the service for lunch was particularly good (17th July apx. 3PM, the young lady couldn’t do enough for us) and the food was lovely too. The food at dinner was also good, everything was tasty but it felt rushed with no breaks at all between courses and were asked if we were ready to order three times before we were ready. We were also given the wrong menu so had to change our order. Breakfast was a real disappointment. We had room service and we were missing things from our tray e.g. butter for toast, spoons for cereal, missing pastries and the cooked breakfast itself looked as if it has been sat under the pass for a long time including our poached eggs which ended up more like hard boiled. I did mention this at check out and the £5 tray charge was removed from our bill as a gesture of good will. When we checked out our bill was completely wrong, with our dinner allowance and complimentary drinks not being accounted for which was rectified. The spa is modern with good facilities, we both had ‘back to your best’ treatments which were great. The ladies changing rooms could have done with a bit of TLC cleaning wise as by 1PM there was lots of hair and other debris on the floor. We had a nice stay overall, but there are certainly areas that could do with improvement.
