The hotel and room smelled horrible...like mold and mildew. It smelled as soon as I walked into the hotel. The smell was in the hallway too. There is only one small elevator. I don't recommend staying here.

We arrived much later than planned e.g., after midnight. Check in was easy and they knew we were traveling with my son's cat so assigned us a pet friendly room on the first floor. The room was quiet and my son and I had no trouble falling asleep. Breakfast was adequate and heavy on the carbs but there was yogurt and plenty of coffee. The property is older, but well-kept, and the staff members were helpful.

The breakfast was decent (microwave Jimmy Dean sausage) in light of many hotels still failing to offer anything for breakfast, then blaming it on Covid. There was no bathroom fan. The room was adequately clean. I think the room price was a little heavy for the value. The A/C worked well and was reasonably quiet.

Yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Know that I searched hard for reasons to give this hotel the very generous two stars that I did - and those come from external sources. There is a walkable steakhouse from this hotel and the somewhat inhospitable woman at check in was kind enough to mention that reservations were required which allowed me just enough time to make them and go over for dinner, which was nice. There’s also a nearby Cracker Barrel. That’s it. Those are the bright spots. The bright spots in a sea of mildew, stains and goodness knows what else (it’s probably best not to think about that.) I’m not a demanding person and the sight of a stray hair isn’t going to send me into a tizzy. The world is not a sterile place. The problems at this hotel aren’t stray hairs or someone forgetting to empty the fridge. It’s dirty. Plain and simple and I’m not sure that’s recognized by the management as there doesn’t seem to be any attempts to remedy it. At check in we were told that no one would be coming into our room during our stay to clean it, and that was fine. Preferred, actually. But I question whether the rooms were even cleaned in between stays, as evidenced by soiled bedding I found (too late) and the disgusting state of the shower (please refer to photos.) Our neighbor left out their towels to be replaced as directed by hotel management, well before the designated time, and there they sat outside their door, well into the next day. It’s not a large building. Two floors, with a bag of towel certainly visible from the center stairs should any employee do so much as take a glance. My husband (who is even more lax and forgiving and who generally doesn’t notice most of the things that I notice), was equally grossed out and initiated that at NO point during our stay did he notice a cleaning cart. Again, not for our room but there were others who came and went during our time there and surely their room MUST have been cleaned before admitting the next guests, right? Don’t count on it. If you’re passing through and want to stay close to I-57, there’s other options. Many other options. If you’re coming to SIU it’s about a 20-minute drive down 13 again, with MANY other options between. This place is not fussy-dirty as in I only had one soap on my bathroom tray or an elevator button didn’t light up. It’s health-hazard dirty, not cleaned between stays, bedding and bathroom filth gross. Choose somewhere else. I have no idea how this place has the positive ratings that it does.

The Baymont is an older motel, but seemed very clean and accommodating. We thought everything was great the minute we got to the suite. Then the air hit us -- total "weed" smell and the bathroom was full of the scent. You could not get away from it. It was like it was coming in from a vent. So we got the desk clerk and she came to the room and she agreed with us. She was very apologetic. She said, "Oh yea, weed is legal and they smoke it all the time. I will talk to the people over you. We don't have any more available rooms." She then promptly went back to the front desk. Here's the deal. Smoking rooms should be smoking rooms and non-smoking should not have to put up with the leftover smoke. We had three kids with us and it was late, so we just turned on the fans and air and tried to clear it a bit. So unfair and such a disappointment. Unless you are in the mood, don't go to the Baymont in Marion. Obviously, it's a party house.
