I have had the most amazing and inspirational day baking bread with Emmanuel and my fellow bakers at the Artisan Bakery. Their hospitality was so generous and warm, it felt like I was on holiday not just a course, the food was delicious…a truly memorable day thank you!

I recently attended a baking for beginners course at the Artisan Bakery. The whole day was a brilliant experience, well organised and informative. Les Nicholson is extremely knowledgeable and able to translate that knowledge to others. He guided us through the process, making bakers of us all. Louise organised the event and could not have been helpful before or on the day. The hospitality was also, first class. I would very much recommend.

We stayed in the gorgeous Shepherd's Hut for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The hut has everything you could possibly need and the furnishings, bedding, crockery etc was all of the highest specification. Beautifully clean - spotless in fact - throughout, everything looked brand new. We were so cosy and snug in the hut and clever additions (such as folding chairs/table) meant that we had all that we could possibly need. I was able to cook full meals thanks to having a combi microwave and oven, with a double hob too. The bed was a little soft for my liking but that, of course, is a very subjective thing and we did sleep really well throughout :-) The heated swimming pool was a huge hit with my daughter and waking up to nature was glorious. Rabbits and chickens...perfect for children thanks to the sheer amount of space they have to explore and play in. The welcome pack was also very much appreciated and generous - all you could possibly need to start off your break in style. We had a wonderful stay and cannot recommend highly enough. Louise was a wonderful host, giving us great advice about what to see and do in the local area. We can't wait to visit again! :-)

My wife and I stayed in the Shepherd Hut for 4 nights. Booking process was easy and when I emailed questions about places to eat out, walk or cycle the reply was prompt and turned out to be very useful. Warm greeting on arrival with a lovely welcome pack of goodies we ate during our stay, including fresh eggs from our nearest neighbours the chickens! The hut was roomy and well laid out making it comfortable for a 4 night or even longer stay. Lovely spot under the big trees where we ate breakfast and sat out during our stay making the most of the fine weather. Great swimming pool that was available to guests in timed slots because of Covid social distancing and privacy. However, we and the other guests we met were happy to share slots as the pool still wasn’t busy. Our only regret is lockdown meant no bread making sessions which wasn’t our reason for staying but would have been a nice thing to do. Not that we need one but we now have a reason to go again when we can attend a session. A lovely spot, very helpful hosts, and great accommodation for a relaxed break for two.

I attended Emmanuel Hadjiandreou's 2 day course on sourdough in May 2021, hosted by at the Artisan Bakehouse in one of the most beautiful parts of the South Downs, not far from Chantonbury Ring. If you're interested in sourdough bakery it is worth huntiing down a copy of Emmanuel's book, but being able to learn from Emmanuel himself was an absolute treat. Over two days, in the excellent company of 7 other keen bakers of varying levels of experience, we covered an impressive range of different sourdoughs, from standard white, to fruit and vegetable filled sourdoughs, to rye, ciabatta and pizza. Emmanuel even took up a challenge thrown from the floor. You go home with an armful of loaves and a headful of ideas and new recipes. The support from Artisan Bakehouse is top notch, both in terms of their admin and the warmth of their hospitality. I am vegan and I had a splendid lunch on both days. They even bought in vegan cheese to go on the pizza base we made as part of the course. If you get the chance to stay or learn here, grab it.
