I had the opportunity to stay at granny o'neils for 2 nights last weekend. it was like being welcomed into the home of a distant but favorite uncle and aunt. the rooms were comfortable and clean, tons of hot water...all good. But the real memory was in the food and the company. eggs benedict, pancakes with strawberry syrup, strawberries dipped in chocolate. wine, booze, snacks, home baked cakes and excellent company. bill in his chef's suit and hat wore an easy smile and truly enjoyed the challenge of 6 possible different breakfast entries, catering to each person's personal request. bill and gretchen (gigi) are a super couple and i felt at ease and in the comfort of my own home the entire weekend. very close to galena, dubuque, quad cities and other local points of interest. decent food at a reasonable price available in nearby restaurants. but for a truly memorable dinner, sweet talk your gracious hosts and maybe they will make you a special dinner to go along with the 5 star breakfast. i loved it and would recommend this place to any visitors to the area. thanks ! bill and gretchen.…
We decided to stay here instead of Galena, IL. It was nice to be away from all the happenings in Galena. You are only about 25 minutes south of the area. Bill and Gigi were very nice host. They upgraded our room from a single queen sized room to their large (old master bedroom) ,which could sleep 4 comfortable in the beds (1 queen and1 full sized in the room) to our surprise without additional charge. The bathroom is wonderfully clean and well maintained for the age of the house, very updated. It is a shared bathroom for guest to use. Even though it is a shared bathroom, it didnt feel awkward. It felt like home. There was enough privacy. Our beds were very comfortable, and the linens were very crisp and fresh not like over laundered hotel sheets. Our room had a ceiling fan, but it was such a beautiful night we opened our windows. The best part of our evening was sitting with Bll an Gigi and their other guests. Bill was kind enough to offer us a glass of wine. It was a wonderful ending to a busy day. Unfortunately,we did not witness Bill's gourmet cooking. There was a family emergency that had them leaving quite early in the morning. We were totally okay with finding our own breakfast. Even with the emergency they were kind enough to make us coffee before they left.…
After hours of searching this appeared to be a wonderful option for several family members meeting in the area. There are some very good points and some very disappointing things. First, Chris was our breakfast chef and she was fabulous. the quiche, casserole, and coffee cake were all outstanding. Secondly, Bill and Jerry were very nice and easy to deal with. The main house is nice, but the house we rented is a great idea, not well executed. I was so excited to rent a 3 bedroom house for our extended family to share at a very good price. The house itself is a beautiful old brownstone but the furnishings leave much to be desired. The 70's living room set needs to go. The beds are quite comfortable, and the antiques there are lovely. Unfortunately, I cannot say it was clean. The last guest's garbage was still there along with a load of beatles, wasps and spiders.…
I stayed here as a last resort. Every hotel within a 45 minute drive was full. Boy was I surprised. Next time I need to return to the area, I'll call Bill @ Granny O'Neil's before I call any franchised area hotel/motel. The Inn is very small and intimate. Well maintained and very clean. Plenty of parking and located just off the main drag. Bill even gives rides to local bars if you don't want to drive. Bikers are welcome. Bill is a chef and apparently doesn't screw around when it comes to the 'breakfast' in B&B. I was blown away by the breakfast he cooked from scratch. I didn't need to eat again until 2pm that afternoon.
