The Manta Raya Hotel is an absolute Gem! After reflecting on any of the negative comments/reviews we read prior to experiencing the hotel, it is clearly obvious to me that people have very different wants and needs from a vacation hotel. If you don't like a little adventure in your vacation journey, experiencing a bit of culture and are looking for a lively beach and nightlife atmosphere, this is not the place for you. The journey to the hotel is slightly off the beaten path and has some bumps in the road which is also unique and interesting, to look into the lives of people living in this small community. If you are looking for a charming, quiet, relaxed atmosphere at a incredibly beautiful and unique location, this is the place for you. The Hotel staff are warm, inviting and caring. Rooms are large and comfortable The food is wonderful. The complimentary breakfast of fruits, fresh baked breads, homemade jams, and fresh juice was ample for us. Any other traditional breakfast items outside what was complimentary were available to order at a very reasonable cost. Dinners each night were excellent, we chose the fresh fish dinner each night, Awesome! The beach is great! A nice beach for a small walk explore some rocks and tidal pools on either end and white sand with a swimmable light surf in the middle. Great sunsets. - WIFI worked well - Pool is great - AC was great - Everything was clean including facility bathrooms
We enjoyed the Manta Raya so much we came back later in our trip just to hang out and enjoy a lunch. Can't wait to comeback again soon.

My husband and I stayed at Manta Raya for 4 nights after our wedding and would definitely come back. I did a lot of research on options to stay all along the coast in Oaxaca and ultimately decided to go with MR for two main reasons - how peaceful/quiet it seemed and the positive reviews about the food. It did not disappoint in either category! The food truly was excellent, and it is in a beautiful, very remote location. Fernanda, the assistant manager was incredibly kind and helpful and really made us feel welcome during our stay. She helped arrange a driver so we could take a day to explore other beach towns, and anything we had a question about she was very knowledgable on and we genuinely felt like she cared about both us and the quality of our stay.
Some things I think are important if you are deciding to stay at MR:
- The room we stayed in was clean and spacious and while we loved being on the top floor, if you are not good with stairs I would just try to get a room on a lower floor. Our bed was very comfortable and the view from the balcony was unbeatable.
- We were basically the only people staying at the hotel and therefore had the place mostly to ourselves, including the pool and beach but because the area is so remote, even though there are other houses I don’t think it would ever feel too busy.
- We had no cell service for quite a while around the hotel. There is of course wifi at the hotel but frankly I would not be confident in it (at least in the room we stayed in) if I needed to make video calls or download a lot of files for work, so for me I think it would be better as a vacation vs work remote location. I wasn’t able to get any FaceTime audio or video calls in or out. It was great to disconnect so that isn’t a complaint, just something to keep in mind.
- The food is delicious and definitely reasonable based on the portions and quality but I don’t get the sense that there’s a lot of other places to eat that are walkable (I did see signs for a couple other places, but we did not explore them) so again because of the remote location you should probably expect to mainly eat at the hotel.
- It was also just so lovely to have all our meals al fresco in the dining/bar area every day. Looking at the ocean, watching the hummingbirds and the hotel cat Pedro lazing about was truly just so relaxing and peaceful.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a hotel or spot with lots of nightlife and activities, Manta Raya is not your spot. If you are instead looking for a peaceful, beautiful and remote stay to read a book, connect with loved ones, and enjoy nature and great food, I highly recommend staying at Manta Raya! We considered spots in Mazunte, Puerto Escondido and Zipolite and I am SO glad we decided to MR instead. I do hope to take a trip to Puerto at some point but if we are not staying there and want some peaceful beach time we will absolutely be back at Manta Raya. Thank you again MR team for a wonderful stay!

I feel very fortunate that my family had the privilege and pleasure of being a guest at the MantaRaya Hotel. It was one of those rare life experiences that exceeded all of our expectations. In a world of AI generated social media, fake news and inauthentic people it is rare to find a place where the hotel, its location, it’s views, ocean and beach were better than any posted pictures. The gourmet food tasted better than the reviews and the staff were even more attentive, genuine and warmer than prior guests had described.
If you crave serenity, you can trust the many 10/10 reviews.

We loved our stay at Manta Raya! Salchi is a beautiful place, very quiet and with a splendid, almost virgin beach. Peace and harmony reign in Manta Raya. The hotel is really nice and our room, the largest I think, was wonderful, with an incredible view and spectacular sunsets. What about the staff? Fernanda and Sara are simply wonderful and with their smiles they pamper you and try to please you in everything. Reto, the owner, was also invaluable, giving us excellent advice. The food is delicious: Mexican but with some Mediterranean influence, which makes it irresistible. I conclude that from here you can visit all the bays of Huatulco by taking comfortable taxis and returning in the evening to the calm of Manta Raya. We visited the bay of San Augustin (El Capi restaurant at the top) and took a boat tour in the most remote and beautiful bays in India, Chachaual, Cacaluta and Mauguey.

A beautiful hotel on secluded Salchi bay. A great place to disconnect from everything. It is very secluded!! The food is excellent and everything is very fresh. Staff goes above and beyond to help (Fernanda is great & Reto gave us a ride to town one day). There’s a pool and the ocean (can be rough) for swimming. Bumpy dirt access roads make it difficult to get to (but we did rent a car in town the second day and managed using Google Maps to venture out more). WiFi service was spotty in the room but good on main level out to beach (very limited cell service due to remote location). Highly recommend Manta Raya!!

Simply one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed! We booked based on positive reviews, and can only repeat the positive qualities that that others have said.
Salchi is a tiny little town with one of the most beautiful beaches ever! White sand, little shells, and somewhat swimmable. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves! The most people we saw was maybe 10?! It can have some big waves when the wind is up, but we managed to get some snorkeling in during the calm and saw some wonderful marine life.
The food is delicious! Every meal was fantastic! We were so spoiled!! Fernanda surprised us with dinner on the beach for a birthday celebration and WOW was it a wonderful meal, atmosphere and service.
The room had a spectacular view, was clean, comfortable (chairs and hammock on the deck overlooking the ocean), quiet and private.
What stands out the most was our hosts - the level of service provided to us, and every other guest, was impeccable. They made us feel welcome and like long time friends.
A hidden piece of paradise and highly recommend the Manta Raya!!

Stayed for 3 nights at the end of a 10 day trip to huatulco. Ate most meals at the hotel. Breakfast was great for the wife and kids but I ordered extra paid breakfast which was delicious. Lunch and drinks by the pool were so delicious. Dinner was awesome every night with great variety. The staff cooked special meals for the kids aged 2 and 4. Recommend manta raya for everyone.

Every good person deserves to stay here at least once in their lives: it's a heavenly haven straight out of paradise! It's blissfully quiet, only the roaring waves are a constant. The hotel and rooms are attractive but simple and a mere few steps away is the quietest beach you can imagine, on busy days there might be 10 people on it. The sea is warm but generally has strong waves, good fun for a splash about but not necessarily a swim. I spent hours on the comfy (and readily available) sun-loungers in the shade reading and relaxing from my busy life. Although we had a rental car we opted to eat mostly at the hotel as it was just so yummy. Had lovely drinks too- from lovely cocktails to local craft beers, every whim was catered for. We met other guests staying there- there was a casual but respectful friendliness among the guests which allowed interaction or privacy as one desired... just right. The staff deserve special mention, the owner Reto couldn't have done more to make us feel at home and the lovely staff members especially Sara and Fernanda were wonderful, even bringing us down to the beach late at night to surreptitiously peek (at a safe distance) at a turtle mother digging a hole to lay her eggs in... a very special moment for us. And I was lucky enough to spot a whale from the beach! All in all it was a wonderful stay and I was slightly bereft when leaving... only the certain knowledge that I'll be back and the feeling of gratitude at having experienced something so wonderful, lifted my spirits.

Manyaraya is a wonderful secret place you only wish you could find more often. A small 7 room impeccably run boutique hotel for a quiet retreat for sun and sand Wonderful fresh healthy food prepared to your liking. A variety of delicious seafood, Fastidiously maintained pool, grounds and rooms. Reto is the maestro who brings it all together with friendly staff, Fernanda and Santiago adding a lively vibe. This is a magic place, off the beaten path but that only adds to the charm and why we were so lucky to have discovered.

We just returned from a week long stay for a wedding at Manta Raya. The entire week was an incredibly positive experience. Reto and his amazing staff hosted a wedding of 70+ people at the hotel and everything went flawlessly.
This boutique hotel is a perfect location to get away from it all and just enjoy the beautiful setting on the beach. The entire staff go above and beyond each and every day to make you feel welcome and take care of your needs. The dinners were especially tasty and the casual atmosphere around the restaurant and pool area felt like we were just hanging in our yard with friends and family.
I can't recommend this little gem hotel enough. We will most definitely go back. Kudos to Reto for having such a great support crew to work alongside him. You can tell he values his staff and it shows in their efforts to make the hotel a welcoming environment and they all take immense pride in their work and it shows.

Hi Debbie,
the only room, that has a fridge is the luxury suite, but it has a king size and a single bed.
Of course we can give you ice, but not bags of ice. The closest stire is a 5 minute drive away from here, but it has only limited options.
Greetings,,Reto

The cab fare is 350 MXN, USD are not widely accepted, but are accepted at the hotel.
Mosquitos are currently not a problem, but it is always good to have mosquito repellent.
There are a couple of walks you can take, will be explained at the hotel. But leave early, as it gets hot very quickly.
There are more places to choose from in the Salchi area.
