We visited the Mosteiro in August 2016 with our family (3 kids - 17, 7 and 4 - and 2 adults) and stayed in the Casa dos Conversos. When we first drove up to the gates (dark descending, winding, narrow roads, SatNavs and phones both running out of power as we drove in) and saw the imposing Church and gates...

It is the place that in 3 weeks in Portugal I liked best. But it is not easy. First, it is not easy to find, even with GPS. Second, it is very isolated, in a wood, some 4 km from the closest village. But it is wonderful, in an oak wood, with a beautiful restored monastery, with a modern addition...

We asked at the tourist office of Viseu, and recommended us to visit the monastery (which is open to the public, for being an accommodation, they said). After half an hour of a bad road trip we discovered that the monastery is managed by a family and opens when they please. They gave us with the door in the face....

Living like a monk but with XXI century amenities. An extraordinary well restored monastery, in the middle of a forest of oak trees. Excellent rooms (2 inside the monastery, the rest in the in the outside courtyard. Swimming pool with a wood deck where you can linger - reading or just daydreaming. You can also linger in the breakfast room...

Charming place to relax in the middle of a mixture of nature, history and religious experience. My husband and I stayed for just 2 nights and it was raining all the time but there was a magnificent window all along the wall in the living room with a great view to the woods, cosy by the fire. Somehow it allowed...

The Mosteiro de Sao Cristovao is a destination in itself. We were living in Portugal at the time we went there, and were looking for an out of the way place to stay. As I understand it, the Portuguese government sold this amazing monastery, in ruins, to a Portuguese family from Porto. Over many years, the monastery was painstakingly restored....

I agree with some of the reviews: The service was practically nonexistent. Nowbody to be found to have towels on the pool which anyway we have to leave when a bunch of kids, family of the owners -and I agree with e-64: most unprofessional- came in screaming.

The Mosteiro is truly exquisite. Abundant breakfast. We were travelling with friends and four kids and stayed at the annex house which is superbly furnished and immaculate. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful. The Monastery itself is a gem.

We stayed here for 2 nights in the suite which has also has a small kitchen. When we arrived it took a while before somebody showed up. It turned out that the owners were not there (away in the Algarve) and the caretaker/maid only speaks Portuguese. More surprising was the large amount of children in the swimmimg pool. This turned...

The buildings of the former Monastery of Sao Cristovao de Lafoes date from the end of the 17th century, but its foundation goes back to the 12th century. A breakfast and living rooms, a room for games and a small bar at the reception are also at the disposition of the guests. The Monastery is surrounded by a wood, a moutain river marking its limits. In the picturesque stream there is a natural swimming pool with small waterfalls, swimming and diving is possible. There are many opportunities for hiking either in the Monastery wood or in the mountains surrouding the place. There is a golf course at 18 km distance and a SPA of S. Pedro do Sul (10 km).
