Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favourite
We had a small family gathering over three nights requiring three rooms. We found the staff and owners to be very friendly and co-operative. The rooms were comfortable, but perhaps a little quirky, for example there were no bedside tables in the Tower Suite. The Tower Suite proved to be ideal for gatherings of our group. The housekeeping service was a little spotty, some items not being attended to and an oversupply of others.
We had breakfast in the restaurant three times and dinner twice. The second dinner was the Mongolian Grill which was an excellent dinner that is a monthly summertime event that is very popular with locals. While the food was OK, the restaurant was almost empty on each of the other occasions we ate there, suggesting that many residents chose to eat elsewhere.
The grounds are quite extensive and we made use of the pool and visited the winery. Overall, it is a pleasant family run resort which could maybe benefit from a little fine tuning, which will surely occur over time.

I am reviewing the restaurant portion of this property only. The hotel is open but we only went in for dinner.
Everything was very, very nice, right from the first contact for a reservation via email, down to the final bill. Firstly, the hotel and environs is really really nice and I would likely stay there but we are locals. The restaurant was very clean and fresh and the interior tables were well spaced. The patio was also open but we opted for indoor seating. The service was prompt and unobtrusive. We ordered the local wine and beers. I can say, the vidal was good, as was the house beer. The menu is not large, thankfully, but there is something for everybody. Our group of five ordered, rouladen, schnitzel (which is pan fried the way it should be) and the chicken pesto dish. We also ordered the tomato bisque for appy. All of the food was brought to the table on individually domed plates, which kept the food hot and germ free on its trip to the table. Very much appreciated. The chef here obviously takes much pride in the food that is being served, as it was all so delicious. The prices are very reasonable as well for a fine dining place.
We will definitely be going again, and would definitely recommend!

We only stayed for one night but had an overall very nice experience. The check-in was a bit choppy as their system was not up-to-date, but beyond that we had a nice room at the carriage house, which is quiet, spacious and comfortable. The Roullarde and the Schnitzel were very German-authentic, tender and tasty! The wine tasting was a very pleasant surprise, as Valerie was very knowledgable and took her time with us. The wine itself was OK; not bad for a basically brand new winery; and it would be nice to get some (more) high quality nibbles with the tasting flight. (the ham and cheese box is just very basic). The vast property and the (somewhat private) beach are great to explore. Staff are very easy-going and friendly, and we liked the overall attention to detail and service.

The winery and location of this hotel is lovely, they have a cute private beach which is great to walk down to. At check in it all went downhill - upon entering the room you could smell the mold and the barroom ceilings are full of black mold. Extremely unsafe and a health risk to anyone that’s more susceptible to illness. I kindly asked to switch rooms and was told they were fully booked but I could speak to the manager in the morning.. I said ok no problem. In the morning, was met with such an aggressive attitude from the manager when I just informed her of the mold. She said it was “actively being cleaned”. You cannot actively clean mold, you have to get rid of it and then ensure it doesn’t come back again. Regardless the way she spoke to us was so rude - she repeatedly asked “what is it that you would like” and when I became disappointed with her tone and ended the conversation and left, I could hear her talking about us with her colleague which was so distasteful. She even said “I won’t be threatened with a bad review” when I never once mentioned leaving a review or threatening anything??? Absolutely bananas. Her attitude was by far the worst experience, even worse than sleeping in mold.

It's an interesting site including the expansive grounds that serve their wedding package business - and with the backdrop of the winery and farm areas. The lake is just a few minutes away. The service was on point, and friendly. The signature dining options in the on site restaurant were excellent, and the wine made on site was very good. They offer wine tastings in the dining room/bar area, and retail on site. (We brought a few bottles home). We had a normal room that was quaint and clean, but ready for a bit of upgrading. All in all, we enjoyed our getaway, and would/will return.

We stayed here on a Sunday evening in early July as a last minute getaway. Overall, the establishment is what it describes, quaint inn on a large parcel of land. We did some exploring of the ponds and area, and found it very relaxing and peaceful. The kids had the pool to themselves most of the time, so that was an added benefit. The room itself was adequate, could use some updating as it was showing some age. The staff was very helpful throughout our short stay.

We were very exicited to spend our mini family vacation to this place. At first we reserved 2 rooms but we had to cancel one of them (due some issues) and when we arrived there we discovered they canceled both of the rooms.
They found us another hotel but it was not even close of what we needed.. At first they did not wanted to pay the difference of price even though we've been sent to a 2 star hotel. But they agree at the end. We had to pay for a hotel that we disliked and was not our choice.
Very upset, our kids were so sad. They were so excited and happy to explore this place, after they've seen the photos. We've been waiting for so long to spend a quiet family vacation in a wonderful place and that was the reason we chose Hessenland Inn.
So after the bitter experience we'll never try to go to this place again, and won't recomend it to anyone.

Hello, Yes....it truly was an error that the front desk agent cancelled both of your reservations instead of the one..as it does not help you to know that both rooms were connected to one reservation number hence the error. We are sorry that you did not experience our Inn and kind service.... Unfortunately, due to the yelling towards our front desk and yelling through the phone to our staff upon your arrival to the next hotel that it was very difficult to work out anything more. We did our very best during a difficult situation. And yes, there are many other lovely hotels in the area should you decide to come up to our beautiful County.

We arrived for a wine tasting and were greeted with a warm welcome by Valerie.
The ambiance was beautiful with many quaint seating areas to choose from.
Valerie went over all the wines with us.
The ones we chose were all terrific.
What a wonderful Gem this winery is along shores of Lake Huron I will definitely be returning when friends come to visit.
Thank you Valerie for your outstanding customer service

We just finished a 4 day quilting retreat at Hessenland. It was the best retreat ever! The food was gourmet at every meal. The room had lots of light and ample space, and electricity. The staff was outstanding - easy to work with, responsive, nice. Everyone felt it was the best retreat location and service they have every experienced. Thank you!

Hello there, thank you for your email, your accommodations are located in exeter which is aproximately 20 minutes away- I'm not sure of exact costs but would think the range would be aprox. $30-$40?? I would suggest talking to the front desk person and ask this question as they would have a better idea of costs and who to call for taxi service.
Have a good day
We love animals however our rooms are not set up for pets.
please visit The Ontario's West Coast website for accommodations that can accommodate pets.
