Detailed Reviews
Stunning location, heritage home with generations of family history set in an historic area, owner/operators who are immersed in their community ... what's not to love!! We especially enjoyed the tea + snacks at day's end where guests and hosts share stories from their day and their lives.

We spent 2 days at this B&B and enjoyed it very much. We had tried to book a B&B in Trinity but everything was full except the very expensive options so we looked for something in the general vicinity that met our price range.
All the expected requirenments are there: nice amenties, delicious breakfast, comfortable bed, etc. But what makes this place special is that the owners, Gary and Shelley, really make the extra effort to make your stay enjoyable. For example, they provide free internet and access to a laptop; coffee is waiting outside the room in case you are up earlier than planned. An extra feature is there 9pm "tea" where the guests are served snacks and get the opportunity to chat with each other and the owners.
The only negative: we went to the theatre in Trinity and the drive back, although not very long, was a bit hairy, No street lights and fog.

We loved our stay at Captain Blackmore's !!!
Even though we had heard from our son what wonderful hosts Garry and Shelly were,we were taken aback by their excellent hospitality !!! You couldn't ask for a more gracious, knowledgable, personal, friendly Newfoundland welcome !!!
Their home is beautiful, historic and lovingly restored. The Newfoundlander suite is really nice.Spacious and restful with a deck to enjoy the water view. The dining room & sitting room by the water are lovely as well.
Breakfasts were bountiful and delicious!! Served so graciously .The evening snacks were a real treat as well.It was such a kind & great idea to offer guests the opportunity to sit down together with Garry & Shelley in the evening if so desired.A chance to swap stories, get travelling tips ,enjoy each other's company and those tasty snacks !
Staying at Captain Blackmore's was a highlight on our visit to Awesome Newfoundland ! We were constantly amazed by the gorgeous, rugged landscape, ocean views, wildlife, great music and the friendliest people! Garry & Shelly being two very special examples !!
Highly recommend this excellent B&B !!!

We spent over two weeks in Newfoundland, and although all of our B&B stays were wonderful, Captain Blackmore's was very special. It is an historic early-20th century mansion that has been rescued and beautifully recreated in the style of its time by descendants of the original owner.
Our room, while very modern, clean and comfortable also had the charm and ambience of an earlier era. In fact this is true of the whole house. The ensuite washroom was probably the best of any we had during the whole trip. Very spacious and modern.
The house is located seaside in the historic village of Port Union, said to be the only union-built town in North America. It is just a short walk to the original heart of town which is being preserved and restored. Well worth the few minutes to visit.
It is also an easy drive from here to Bonavista and Trinity, both "must visit" places.
The food was excellent, and the evening tea and refreshments were a brilliant touch. It gave us an opportunity to chat with the other guests and Gary and Shelley in a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere.
We stayed at other places that epitomized the wonderful, warm "you are at home here" Newfoundland style. At Captain Blackmore's we enjoyed Newfoundland hospitality that was a little more elegant, but no less enjoyable.
Our only regret was that our schedule (and if one is touring Newfoundland, it is important to book accommodations well in advance) did not permit us to stay for a day or two longer.

Response from G B, Owner at Captain Blackmore's Heritage Manor
Responded Aug 25, 2017
Thank you very much for your kind comments about our establishment and, appreciably, about our town and area. We are gladdened to know that we were able to contribute positively to your NL experience. It was very enjoyable chatting with you during your stay and at evening tea. It is one time of the day we are able to sit and be enriched by the many wonderful guests, such as you both, that grace our home. GJB

We stayed for two nights in late July and couldn't have been happier with our stay in the Daisy Kean room. We spent eight nights total in Newfoundland and this was our favourite stop.
The home is beautifully restored and the location was perfect for exploring the area. The views were great and the chance to sit out on a private balcony from our room was a plus!
Garry and Shelly were terrific hosts who we enjoyed having the opportunity to visit with. They made us very comfortable, were accommodating and shared tips on the area and where to go/what to see. We enjoyed the evening get togethers as a chance to meet with Garry and Shelly as well as other guests.. and the food offered was delicious.
Thank you Garry and Shelly and hope to have the opportunity to visit again in the future. Highly recommended!

Shelly and Garry make the place, as is the case with most B&B's. Attentive without being intrusive. Lots of small details are taken care of before you arrive but they also adapt. As with the coffee arrangements made for an early riser and cigar smoker.
Garry has deep roots in the area and Shelly is a mover and shaker in the local community so you get all kinds of insights and connections as part of the package. Be sure and ask Shelly about the Port Union Historic Site and Museum. And Garry about growing up here in the 60's.
The house is a major restoration, rebuild really, of a home in Garry's family. The building is lovely just to look at and sleep in but you also need to look over the photo history of its restoration that's kept in the sitting room.
Comfortable beds and all that. in-romm fridge was very handy.
A choice of options for breakfast each morning. And we were offered the diningroom for a do-it-yourself dinner one evening. Made a change from eating out all the time. The hosts are able to arrange for lobster etc on request.
Lots of recommendations from them for the area. Book at least a day longer than you think you will need.
And just so you know, our stay was quite long by B&B standards. 5 nights. If there were problems...
Consider this a rave.

Fantastic stay at Captain Blackmore's. Garry and Shelly were so welcoming and full of knowledge to help us continue our travels in Newfoundland. Enjoyed our evening tea giving us a great opportunity to meet the other guests. Breakfast was delicious and had us all set for the next leg of our trip.

This was our second visit to Captain Blackmore’s, and we were not disappointed! This is a wonderful place to stay, and is central to all the sightseeing, hiking, and dining that we wanted to do during the week. We stayed in the Newfoundlander Suite for 4 nights, which gave us plenty of room, as well as a nice private balcony overlooking the harbour. Breakfast and evening snacks were superb. Shelley and Gary are by far the most welcoming hosts we have ever experienced, and they have really done everything right. As we love this area of the province so much, we will be back many more times, and will not even consider staying anywhere else but Captain Blackmore’s.

We recently stayed at Captain Blackmore's while visiting Newfoundland and had a wonderful time there. You step back to earlier times in this handsomely restored house. Our room was very comfortable and totally clean and the food was delicious.
What most stood out for us was the terrific hospitality of the hosts, Garry and Shelly, who helped us with any information we needed. They also invited guests to gather with them in the evenings for tea and sweets and conversation. There we swapped stories of our day and gave tips to each other for further excursions. We also heard about the island and some of its history from Garry and Shelly. These gatherings were never pushed on guests; it was up to us whether we wanted to join in.
We highly recommend Captain Blackmore's which was a great base for our trips to Bonavista, the Bonavista Social Club, Elliston (to see the puffins) and the Skerwink HikingTrail.

Better than a five star hotel. This is the very best B and B on planet earth and that is due to the most gracious hosts, Garry and Shelly. They obviously have a deep love and respect for each other and it shows in everything they do including the restoration of this home that has been in Garry's family since 1925. We stayed one night in the J.H. Blackmore room and two nights in the Newfoundlander Suite. Both were impeccably furnished and baths were complete with high end toiletries and the fluffiest of towels. The beds were so lush that it was hard to crawl out in the morning (we can say this after 16 days on road in different places). However, crawling out was easier knowing we had a gourmet breakfast awaiting. Starter was coffee/tea, fresh fruit and muffins. A menu each night allowed selection of entrees along with cereals, yogurt and juices. The evening tea and snacks with Garry and Shelly was a good time to meet other guests, talk about adventures of the day and just wind down. Also, Garry and Shelly are very knowledgable about the area and will share this info with guests. You actually feel more like family than guests. Garry told us about the launch of schooner, leah caroline, built be henry vokey (he was 83when finished building) and we were fortunate to view the launch. Once in a lifetime experience. Many, many thanks Garry and Shelly for making our last nights in Newfoundland memorable.
