Detailed Reviews
It was our first trip to Boothbay Harbor. The Inn is well located across the narrow water bay from the downtown activities. There is a walking bridge right outside the Inn which will get you into town in about 5 - 10 minutes. Great for picking up some breakfast items and sitting outside your room watching the water activity while you eat. The room itself was clean and user friendly. It's one of the only hotels in the area where you can actually specify whether you want a first floor room (no need to do stairs) or second floor (for the better view). The bed was soft, which we prefer and we both slept well. The price was reasonable for that area and time of year (mid-June). The only problem we had was finding the correct driveway to the office but it became funny when I kept missing it. We loved Boothbay Harbor (the shops, the restaurants, the activities - took a cruise to see the Puffins) and we'd stay at the Inn again without hesitation. An enjoyable evening watching the sun set over the town across the water.

The rooms here are the cleanest that I have ever experienced! We travel a lot and typically stay at Hampton Inns and the Boothbay Harbor Inn beat them hands down! The front desk staff were also friendly and very helpful and the view was wonderful.

There are two reasons for my excellent rating: 1) Great harbor views from rooms on the front, 2nd floor, of the hotel and 2) the staff. The Staff at the hotel were very helpful and gracious. During the week the hotel provides a nice breakfast. There was no daily maid service due to Maine Covid protocols. However, the front desk was accommodating in providing towels or whatever else one may need. Note, the main harbor view rooms are on the second floor and the hotel has no elevator making it very difficult for someone physically challenged to get to them.

The Boothbay Harbor Inn. I checked in and discovered one day later that bedbugs had a feast biting me. I stayed one night and was scheduled to come back Friday the 23rd for another night. I cancelled it and immediately got a partial refund. Two weeks later, I am still dealing with an excrutiating itch on several parts of my body. I have a blood disorder and I can't take medications so it makes it more complicated for me. It is unacceptable that the management is not doing a good job at detecting bed bugs issues. After the fact, I looked on line and read previous reports of bed bugs incidents at the hotel. They knew there are bed bugs in the inn but they continued booking rooms at $295 a night-rate I paid for the first night.

Response from Cindy Steane, General Manager at Boothbay Harbor Inn
Responded Sep 5, 2024
I'm so sorry that is has happened to you. We've had an inspector look at the room and I'm very sorry, but there is and was no evidence of bed bugs. And you did receive a full refund of the night that you cancelled.

1 star for a 1 star hotel, let's start, no continental breakfast, not enough parking to accommodate the number of rooms, the lounge/restaurant is closed 2 nights a week, and if you have a king superior room over the lounge the floors vibrate with the music. There was nothing superior about the room, it was dated and basic, it was 1 of 2 rooms without an awning over the balcony leaving to enjoy sitting out to early in the morning or late in the evening. Bus groups take precedence over other guests( they have continental breakfast when a bus is here). Overpriced and overrated.

We had an overnight stay here on our way traveling north to Quebec city, a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers. It was a fairly last minute booking so we had little to choose from and expectations were not high. We were pleasantly surprised though. Friendly and professional check in. Our initial room on the ground floor had a strong damp smell but we were moved without issues as soon as we asked. The room on the upstairs level was much brighter and no smell issues at all. We booked an inner harbor view and had a side view of the harbor with seats on a balcony. Very enjoyable. The room with 2 queen beds was very clean spacious and beds very comfy. The only minor niggle was the lack of breakfast available. There is a breakfast room half set up however we were told no breakfast available.
Other than that we are happy to recommend this place. Inside nicer than outside! Also the footbridge is now fully open and very handy.

We stayed here fore 5 days late in August. Our experience was different from others. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but for us the lack of any mention of certain aspects of staying here is confusing. Let me explain.
The entrance to the hotel is confusing. While there is a large sign announcing the hotel if you turn before the sign you will be entering an auxiliary parking lot. Needless to say, it took awhile to find the correct entrance.
Once at the front desk we were bluntly told by a woman without a name tag that they couldn't provide us with a first floos room. It had aslready been bookd. Seeing as how we made our reservation on May 25 and now it was August 23 3 months later that was hard to accept. My wife has spinal stenosis so climbing stairs is not an easy task. We found out later this hotel caters to tours. Tour guests take precedence. By coincedence there was a tour bus parked outside. We were told by an employee that we were in luck regarding breakfast because with the bus there we would be getting a hot breakfast. That was very telling. We found out that a sister hotel brings over hot breakfasts when there's a bus. No bus, no hot breakfast.
The restaurant/lounge was closed for most of our stay. The day prior to our departure it opened in the afternoon, but only served alcohol, no food.
Then there is the matter of the krys. You are given these cheap keys that unlock the door. Howeverm they don't properly fit into the lock. You have to jiggle the key and eventually with some effort you can get the door to open. This is very problematic because the hotel dows not their doors at night. If you are out in the hall , sometimes for minutes you could be accosted by someone. The stairwell is up by the front door so anyone can slip up ther stairs without anyone from the front desk seeing them. And more likely than not there won't be anyone at the front desk.
Because the hotel failed to tell us we were going to have to be in a second floor room and the key issue we won't be coming back.

I wanted to give a 3 and 1/2 stars, but gave 4, because can’t do halves. They have a great location across the pedestrian bridge on the bay side, overlook the harbor side. That creates an opportunity for watching beautiful sunsets from your balcony or patio , so make sure to pay extra for that waterfront room OR simply come out to sit on one of several benches to watch it.
Our king size bed was comfortable — firm mattress and good pillows.
At the time when Delta infections are rising, they unfortunately do not require their employees to wear masks (or guests in public areas) — very irresponsible behavior! They use Covid, though, as an excuse to not clean your room while you stay and it was just fine with us. We don’t want unmasked people in our room.
Our a/c did not generate any cold air.
Their breakfast is just pitiful. But there are great breakfast places around that you want to try anyway.
We would recommend to stay there because of the location and comfortable beds.

Pros- great location beautiful views and easy to access shopping and restaurants
Cons- anyone can walk in there any time of the day or night. The exterior doors are propped open and never locked. No security whatsoever. At check in, the front desk staff were downright rude. No elevator so if you have multiple bags you’ll be lugging them up a large flight of stairs. Beds were not made properly, sheets kept coming off the bed and I had to remake several times. Ceiling tiles were stained from leaks and the suspended ceiling is falling down. Very old carpet and all fixtures. Overall the room looked old and worn. The fire alarm went off one night, we evacuated but it appears to be a false alarm.
If it wasn’t for the location, the place should be condemned.

This property was clean, the beds were comfortable, and everyone we encountered was friendly. Since this property is located back off the street behind another property, it was difficult to find. Close parking is limited. Keep in mind that there is no elevator so you need to lug your bags up some fairly steep stairs which was only an inconvenience for us. The locks on the room door were somewhat confusing—we were given 2 different keys. We assumed that one was for the knob and one for the deadbolt, however, we couldn’t get the deadbolt to lock from the outside. We could lock the deadbolt from inside with a little push on the door. Since we only stayed one night, we were satisfied. Cleanliness, comfort, and friendly staff are most important to us.

Yes, Shampoo and soap was in the room upon check in.
I don't know the answer to this question.
The standard bathrooms are small with a tub-shower. Very clean with hair dryers.
Yes, all rooms do have hair dryers.
Yes and your pet will actually enjoy the grounds and walk across the bridge into town as well!
