Detailed Reviews
I can't give it an excellent only because it doesn't pretend to be excellent - it is just a clean, quite, comfortable, affordable little spot run by good hard working folks who cook you a good breakfast every morning before you go out for your shopping adventures. It is plain and the rooms do not have amenities that you would expect from a chain hotel -there are not hair dryers, data ports, or coffee makers in the room. but you know something? Sometimes simple is just as nice and will suffice. It is just four doors down from the swanky Harraseeket - on the same side of the street, so when we felt like being fancy we could just stumble over there and see how the "other half" was living. Truly, though, these folks do a great job - quietly and unpretentiously. There was not a speck of dust, nor a stain or tear - to me, that's more important than the wall hangings, but of course, it all depends on what you're looking for.

We have stayed here many times and have always had a lovely experience. Jackie and Lew are so very accommodating and always have a joke or a story to tell. The breakfast that they serve certainly gives a person a great start on the day.

The Village Inn might be eclipsed by its flashier neighbors (the Freeport area is rife with Inns and places to stay), but it is definitely the diamond in the rough. Right next to the downtown Freeport area (the outlets), this little inn is a steal compared to the fancier inns surrounding it ($50 less a night). We stayed in the building behind the main inn. The rooms have ample space, but small bathrooms, with the sink placed in the actual room itself, rather than in the bathroom. But we didn't find it cramped. It is plainly decorated, and there is a TV with cable and free internet (wireless).
There was a complimentary breakfast provided in the main inn, which was SO GOOD! Each morning, we were given a hefty portion of our choice of bacon or sausage, french toast/toast & eggs/blueberry pancakes. We got the french toast one morning -- 3 slices, with 2 strips of bacon, and toast and eggs (3 eggs and 3 slices of toast) with 2 links of sausage the second morning. Maple syrup is provided in big containers, so you can load it on your breakfast! There is also OJ and coffee or tea provided. The best part of the breakfast was the owner, Lewis. He was always really friendly, and would come to your table to get your order and serve it up hot a short wait later. He would also chit chat if the breakfast rush was slow (which it was when we were there). The perfect touch to our trip! Highly recommend staying here!!

My wife and I stayed at the Village Inn over Thanksgiving weekend. The couple that own the inn (Lew and Jackie), do their best to make one feel comfortable and welcome. Keep in mind; this is a motel style establishment with what appears to have been the carriage house converted into multiple units up and down.
I have to say, with very little work this place could be more highly rated. The room itself was spotless, as was the shower stall and the little sink area in the bedroom. No mildew in the shower, what a revelation! No cobwebs in the corners or candy in the baseboard heater. The entrance door to the building is in need of a coat of paint and other areas some simple cosmetic repair. All items that can give a lasting impression but are easy and inexpensive to fix.
There is however one exception to this, the carpets appear to be 70’s vintage and well beyond their ability to be cleaned. That same rug seems to run throughout the inn and carries with it a musty odor of those spray sanitizers. This type of thing may not bother some but I certainly would not allow small children to play on it. Another simple repair albeit more costly, but one that would ultimately lead to more repeat business.
As mentioned in another review, there are no amenities such as hair dryer, shampoo or coffee but I always bring some along and don’t really care to pay an extra fifty dollars for it. The off-street parking is ample and secure.
Lew cooks a fine breakfast in the morning for his guests in the main house. Choice of cheese omelet, pancakes, French toast, eggs, sausage or bacon along with ample coffee and conversation served up with genuine down east concern for your satisfaction. Lew also posts a note on the short menu stating that he will cook to order if you have a special request. What more can one ask for?
We received a call from home late Friday night, which prompted an early departure the next morning. Since neither Jackie nor Lew were up that evening or in the morning when we left, I placed a note in the room for them asking if they would consider a refund for the following night. After dropping an e-mail to Jackie which provided clarification to her, she credited us for it. That particular act of kindness and caring speaks volumes. We had paid for three nights, stayed two, but the advance cancellation notice was insufficient. Jackie none-the-less extended herself, leaving us with another positive feeling about the people that run the Village Inn.
One can walk to most everything from the inn, including many eateries and shops. Of the restaurants we tried, I recommend the Jameson Tavern for its reasonable prices, great service (Rick was our waiter) and decent wine selection. The Azure right next door lacked quiet charm and personal attention but did offer higher prices. The electronic piano was so loud it detracted from the atmosphere and many of the tables were right on top of each other.
For the price difference between the inn and some of the pricier places to stay, you can enjoy a fine dinner or simply feel you found a bargain and pocket the difference. As I mentioned previously, if the cosmetic repairs and carpet issue were addressed I would rate this place as a five.

Stayed there last night. We travel a lot and found the Freeport Village Inn just average. Someone else posted it is like a Motel 6. That is close as far as decor is concerned, but it was way cleaner than any Motel 6. We found it quiet and close to the shopping areas of Freeport. Many reviewers raved about the made to order breakfast. I would not say that was the case. The full pot of self-serve coffee was completely cold and undrinkable. Finally a pot of hot coffee arrived. Lou approached our table and said "I'm listening." This is how our breakfast order was taken. To another diner he said "what do you want?" No warm greeting. No explanation of what was available. Perhaps Lou and Jackie were just having a bad day, because the experience we had and I suspect of the other guests today at breakfast was not as others have described. That being said, I asked for eggs over medium and got scrambled eggs instead. So much for the made to order breakfast. I was late in booking a room for this very busy fall "leaf peeper" weekend, and this was the last room available in the area. I would not intentionally choose the Village Inn again.

I stayed for one night at the Village Inn and was pleased with everything. For one thing, the proprietors practice truth in advertising. This large Victorian home as been redone in motel-style units. You will not find fancy toiletries or poufy curtains, and the inn's website states this clearly.
What you will find is an immaculately clean room, a shower with good water pressure and no trace of bacterial lifeforms, comfortable mattress and pillows, a freshly prepared breakfast, and all-around peace and quiet. Not to mention the savings in cost that the lack of extras seems to ensure--the inn is the best deal costwise in downtown Freeport , at least on the date I made the comparison, and you can walk to everything. The innkeepers mentioned that new carpets were soon to be installed. They keep the place up.
I give this place an excellent rating based on what the proprietors claim to provide, what I actually found, and the value for my money.

We chose the Village Inn because of its location and the rave reviews about the blueberry pancakes. The room was small by comparison to most chain hotels; however, it was the cleanest hotel room we have been in a long time. The room was big enough for a full-sized bed, a small desk and a recliner, with just enough room left over to navigate around. The pink bed spread looked like it was stolen from my grandmother's house. The furniture was dated, BUT the mattress was comfortable and everything was spotless. The L.L. Bean stores and other shopping is a short walk. This is a plus as parking can fill up and traffic gets congested. Breakfast was fresh and the pancakes were pretty good. Don't expect a bunch of extras or fancy amenities. Good place to stay if you're passing through for the night like we were.

We stayed here three nights. For 3 of us they offered the "rear room". In addition to two beds it also had two recliners and lots of room for us. It was very comfortable. The hosts are a congenial couple and readily available if there's any need. There is a choice of five items for breakfast; the pancakes are excellent, and they make the best home fries that I've had in a long time.
On top of it all, the rate is excellent. If we ever come to this area again, we would stay here.

Nice and neat rooms at a great price. Breakfast of blueberry pancakes (what else would you have in Maine?) was very good. Kept us going all day. The owners are very friendly and pleasant company at breakfast. They were very helpful. Would definitely stay here again.

Our family trip to Freeport was exceptional! The Village Inn was like
staying at your grandparents home. Rooms were exceptionally clean, nicely done and did I say clean?? There is nothing fancy about this place but it has everything you need when you return to your hotel after a long day of sightseeing. It is right in the midst of everything you want to do in Freeport. You can walk to it all!! Breakfast was cooked to your liking and the owners are everyday people trying to make your stay the best it can be. We hope to return next year. If you are looking for amenities...you are at the wrong place. If you want to feel like you are going home......you are there at the Village Inn. We all loved it.
