What a treasure trove of a lodge and location! We stayed here for two nights and two days and we had a blast! The place is full of nature, quiet and is beautiful! Best place to visit is late August, September and October as the weather is more tolerable and less bugs. I could imagine how beautiful it would be during the Fall and Winter for the ski season.

There are a lot of activities to do here. For examples, one could hike, ATV, canoeing, kayaking and skiing during the winter. The Lodge used to rent out ATVs and mountain bikes but is no longer. For our stay, we did the 5k trail on the ATV routes and discovered two creeks with mini waterfalls. What a way to cool off from a long hike. There are two directions for the ATV routes, we choose the direction that is upstream of the Lodge with a plan to canoe back after the hike. The canoe or kayak trip down the Goulais River is a must do. We did the 2k long though a 5k long option is available and it was gorgeous along the banks. Very clear water for swim as well. Kim, the owner, was nice enough to bring us the canoe after the hike so we could go on with our day trip. She is super nice.

The lodges themselves are nice and we stayed in the Shady Cedar. There is a caboose and a bigger lodge with 3+ rooms. Ours has a fridge, shower, gas stove and oven, coffee maker, BBQ, shower, TV and two double beds with pullout sofa. Beds have seen their days but for a short stay not too bad. There are lot rooms for trailers, RVs and tents near the water aside from the lodges. Highly recommended for those looking for a place to escape and be with nature or a place for a bachelorette or bachelor party or simply for a cross country trip. We would like to come back for the winter skiing season!

You need to bring your own food and drinks as there is no restaurant onsite. What could improve the place is some TLC around the property and some welcoming camp fires!

All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend to our friends and would come back again.

Stayed for only 1 night while snomobiling through the area. We were treated like friends. The main lodge is warm and inviting. The food was homemade and delicious. Our room was clean and cozy with everything we needed after a long day of snowmobiling. They were so accommodating as even though the kitchen was not supposed to be open for breakfast that day... Kim made us breakfast even though she was supposed to be off and it was her 1 day to sleep in. The private trail to ride there seemed a bit overwhelming for me so Dave geared up and rode with us to ensure we were comfortable and made it without incident. They are accommodating and very reasonably priced. Will be back for sure!!!!

The owners Karen and her partner are awesome! Very thoughtful and accommodating. Can’t ask for more personable customer service. This was the perfect spot for us, a family of four looking for a cozy spot near Searchmont Ski Hill. They even thought of getting Easter Eggs for our kids! Thanks for a great stay!

WE stopped in there twice in the last 2 weeks. Looking for accommodation for 12 for 8 Days.
Stop-1 There was a rough tough guy standing outside smoking a cigarette? Seemed too stunned to help us out so we left
Stop-2 Dropped in and there was no body around, although there were dirty clothes on a couch. Then in the office was the "OWNER"? it seemed that we were bothering them, as they never got up and greeted us.
Forget this place its just "STRANGE" the way they greet prospective visitors

Well you know you've found a great place when you can't decide if you want to write a review and share the place or keep it a secret and all to yourself!!

My wife and I stayed here a couple of weeks ago, and had a fantastic time. When we booked we thought we were taking a bit of a risk on an unknown entity, but we really loved it. We had a really warm welcome when we arrived (which was late at night after a 9-hour drive), offered food etc. and made to feel at home.

This lodge is set up in the mountains and beside a large river, with a choice of accommodation in various lodge rooms or even a caboose if that takes your fancy. We stayed in a standard room, it was basic and the furniture could be considered dated, but it had everything we needed and more (we didn’t turn the TV on as we were too busy enjoying the outdoors). There was also a private bathroom of course.

We took an ATV tour which was fantastic, down the trails through the forest, across meadows, and through rivers.
We went canoeing down the river – we were dropped off up river with the canoe and life jackets, and then paddled back to the lodge at our own pace, and again thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
We also ate at the onsite restaurant which was really well priced, and the food was great with plenty of variation.

If you like the outdoors, want to be active either doing activities available at the hotel (which also include fishing), hiking in the mountains, if you like the beaches of Lake Superior they are just down the road, as is the town (about 20-minute drive), swimming in the river, or just sitting beside the river reading a book… well I’m sure you will have a great time.

Honestly, the only thing we left unhappy about was the duration of our stay, we would happily have stayed longer, and fully intend on returning here.

I just returned from a ski trip to Searchmont with some friends and we wanted to find a place to stay other than slope side at the resort. We made a reservation the stay in the "Caboose" for the weekend. It was spotlessly clean, well equipped, only five minutes from the ski hill, and certainly unique. What a great, rustic spot. Brennan (the owner) always had a smile on his face, was very helpful and accommodating, and runs a great operation. I highly recommend it and would happily stay here again.

As an added bonus, they also have a kitchen and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Located on a twisting highway right near Searchmont is this jewel of a place. Rooms are basic & clean and you have the option of staying in a converted caboose too! Wander the woods, fish the river, ATV trails in the summer, snowmobile and ski Searchmont in the winter. We have stayed there a few times, most recently with a group motorcycling around Lake Huron. Marty & Marilynn bend over backwards for us, home cooked breakfast & dinner (give them some notice though) and plenty of wood for a late night campfire.

If you are looking for a vacation place, or just a great spot to spend the night off the main drag (it's about 15 minutes off the Trans-Canada/17) you gotta try this out.

Room Tip: Caboose is a hoot, great for kids. They also have a lodge and a single cabin.

We stayed here at the beginning and the end of a recent trans-Canada driving trip, and it was wonderful. It's a family-run place, very laid-back and welcoming, and the accommodations are clean, simple and quiet. The setting is beautiful. I really appreciated you accepting and welcoming our dogs as well.

I am not even sure where to start this one......I had spent a lot of time planning and organizing this stay for my spouse's birthday. He is a huge fan of trains and thought it would be nice to do the Train tour in Ste Sault Marie and stumbled upon the Caboose rental.
Excited by my find I call the Lodge directly and booked and placed a deposit of $250 on January 10, 2017 for our stay for September 17th to the 21st. We were booked for the Caboose, so I continued to book all other travel plans and events around our stay.
In March I was booking the Agawa Canyon Train Tour, so I yet again called the lodge directly and spoke with a female who confirmed my dates from September 17th to 21st, 2017 and provided me the remaining balance. So I book our Train tour and made final travel arrangements.

Fast forward to September 4, 2017, when I decide I should call again confirm the details and obtain any outstanding balance info.
I call and speak with the son/part owner, Brendan (I may be incorrect on the name as he was difficult to hear) I explain I am confirming our booked dates and wanted to know the balance remaining...to which I was advised that he does not have us booked in for the Caboose.
He then proceeded to ask, if when I called I spoke to an old man, his father. I stated that I could not be sure as I booked at the beginning of the year, however did advise that I also had confirmed details around March/April with a female. He again checked the booking and found that they had mistakenly booked us in for October and that someone else has since booked the Caboose via Expedia and he will have to give them a call and then call me back in an hour or potentially tomorrow morning.
Fair Enough, I will wait for him to resolve this accordingly.

I waited until 10:30am the next morning (September 5, 2017) and decided to call, as we are 11 days away from our trip.
The son again answers the phone and inquire as to what is happening. He replied with Sorry we cancelled your booking as we had already paid Expedia $80 for the other booking.
Shocked, I reconfirmed what I had heard and stated, even though we had booked January 10th, 2017, our booking was being cancelled as the lodge was not willing to absorb the $80 mistake on their end.
He again apologized and said that there was nothing he could do as his dad owns 66% of the business and he made the decision.

I was speechless, I could not believe that a business would simply apologize and think that it was okay to cancel a customer's reservation with no resolution who had booked with more than ample time!
This was for a birthday gift! Not to mention we lost out on the cancellation for the Train tour as we had 14 days prior to cancel.
Had I not called, we would have drove 9 hours from Kitchener, ON to get there and would have had no place to go. There was not even an offer of another cabin/room at the lodge, simply I can give you the deposit back.
I could not believe what I was hearing and was so incredibly upset!

At the time I did not have my credit card with me and had to call him back to get my deposit refunded. During this call, he asks if we can make it there this weekend as its available. Are you kidding me?
Firstly, we are 9 hours away..not to mention we have jobs with booked vacation time, children that we had arranged to stay with family, Tours and other events booked for our original dates and might I add my spouses birthday doesn't change because you don't have your @*$% together. I will NEVER recommend or consider renting from Mountainview Lodge again. Shame on them for their I could care less attitude and that they have ruined a well planned/organized vacation for a family and a simple monotone Sorry is all they feel we deserve!

Renter's beware, as if you call the lodge directly your booking means nothing! Clearly the people who book through Expedia and other 3rd party sites have the upper hand on this one.

We hand to cancel all our plans and took loses all around! Think twice before booking with this Lodge.

My family and I stopped over for a night on our way to manitoba from Toronto. The owner was extremely friendly and even made some juicy burgers for the kids at past midnight. That I commend as they took an extra mile to make us sleep fed. Accommodation is not the fancy type but it's worth taking time to enjoy the wilderness especially if you an outdoor type of personal. It reminded me of the good Old days at a safari camp. I will stop over again next time.
