Detailed Reviews
How I wish I'd found this place 4 years ago, when my son started at Bates College--my only consolationis that it's only been open a year or so! The Chandler House in New Gloucester, 20 minutes south of Lewiston, Maine is my idea of B&B perfection. First of all, the owners absolutely could not be nicer or more accommodating; when I mentioned that a room was a bit bright, they had new curtains made before my next visit. They had fresh cookies waiting for us at night, and homemade English muffins in the morning, along with an elegant, healthy full breakfast. Many of the products used seem to be organic. The house itself is a great treat: a wealthy sawmill owner's Victorian mansion, with beautiful paneling and big rooms. The have done a lovely job of decorating it. The hot tub out back and the claw-foot soaking tub inside will not be forgotten! To top it all off, there are truly glorious views from this hillside inn, and places to walk, including this enchanted little village that is perfectly preserved. I didn't know Maine had spots this pretty.
It was a very short drive from town, but felt like 100 years back in time. A highlight of my visits to the College.

We made a detour to New Gloucester to see the nearby Shaker village and we are so glad that we stayed at the Chandler House. We were made to feel welcome right away from Shannon. The house is turn of the century, large and comfortable. At breakfast we met Al who was as friendly and hospitable as Shannon. They made us feel right at home. If you have the time, sign up for massage therapy since Shannon is a LMT.
Also, go down the road to tour around the tiny New Gloucester to see how people have restored the historic homes. The Shaker village nearby is really interesting. Shannon also carefully wrote out the directions to nearby Cyndy's where we had a nice dinner. Thanks Shannon and Al!

I recently stayed at the Chandler House for the second time, and was again very pleased. Lovely rooms, wonderful hosts, beautiful house. The food is excellent, and Shannon and Al go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable. Highly recommended!

Originally, I had booked this inn, because it was close to where my son was getting married. As it turns out, I did not need this room and had other relatives take it instead. From the website, it looked to be an ideal place to stay, in a separate guest house. Although I did not stay there myself, I was told that what it turned out to be was the second floor of a guest house, which was not at all like the main house. While everything was remodeled and very clean, there was no television, no phone, no air conditioning and no closet. There did exist a coat rack of sorts, but there were no hangers. The breakfast was nothing more than a continental breakfast with melon so unripe it was too hard to eat. There were several women there who go every year to meet, although I'm not sure why. I felt terrible having someone take my place in what turned out to be an extremely overpriced venue. Don't be fooled by the pictures. Take your money elsewhere.

We booked this B & B as we wanted to visit the nearby Shaker Village. Our stay didn't start well. We had no sat-nav in our hire car, my phone's internet wasn't working and we were quite lost. I rang the B & B to get directions but I got an answering machine message. We finally navigated our way to the site where we were greeted, unenthusiastically, by whom we presumed to be the host. He said he hadn't answered my call as he was busy mowing. We were shown to the room (which was nice, if a bit shabby) and then, after being told where we could walk to get an evening meal, that was it. No tea and coffee, no water, no information about the area, no access to a kitchen. We walked to get our evening meal (a very good pizza) and brought back a bottle of wine to drink with it. We had no bottle opener, so I rang the host three times. Again, no answer. We ended up digging the cork out with a knife and sitting in a dimly-lit sitting room (no table) drinking out of two slightly dirty glasses left in the room. The next morning we were treated to a nice breakfast but the damage had been done. The excuse we were given was that there was a wedding being held at the B & B that weekend, but ignoring the needs of your B & B guests is not appropriate. We will not recommend this B & B to any of our friends.

We are so sorry to hear your stay was not a pleasant one - we always want our guests to have the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible. All of our guests are important to us and it is our intention to make the Chandler House experience "like visiting family" . Although we understand you will probably not stay with us again, we do hope you will not hold your negative experience against all B&B's - as it is a wonderful way to travel.

Our family recently rented the guest house for our stay during our daughter's graduation from Bates College. We're not from New England, so we spent three nights. It was perfect. Instead of dealing with local restaurants, on Sunday evening we hosted a small celebration at the guest house with supplies from Whole Foods in Portland. Friends who were at their summer house in Maine joined us for the evening. We ended the evening in the hot tub looking at the stars in Maine.
Al and Shannon, our hosts, were wonderful and their breakfasts were also great. My sister and I walked every morning before breakfast, and the countryside and houses were beautiful.
The guest house is newly remodeled and furnished. The Inn also looked wonderful, as we ate breakfast there each morning.

Just a great place to stay, right in-between the Cities, Lakes, Mountians and the Ocean yet in a very quiet and relaxed village. I recommended it to my best friend and they loved it. The Carriage House accepts pets and a very fine Breakfast is surved until 9:00 am.

After an exhausting travel day, we settled into a cozy room at The Chandler House. The Charm of this Restored Old home was so beautiful and welcoming. A relaxing walk on the large grounds, wine on the porch and cookies washed away the stress of our day. The bed was like sleeping on air and breakfast with Al and Shannon completed a most wonderful stay. Please book this for your next stay, you won't regret it! <3

My boyfriend and I have stayed here twice now in the last couple of months and both times it was exceptional. Al and Shannon are very friendly and welcoming, they make you feel like you're staying with family. The first time we stayed we were in the room with the twin bed and the mattresses were so comfortable. Al was nice enough to give us a tour of the grounds and showed us the barn, we also got to meet their two adorable dogs. The second time we stayed, we stayed in the room with the double bed with private bath, and it was perfect as well. Their breakfast is AWESOME, definitely not to be missed. Anytime we come up to visit family this is the place we will always stay.
