Detailed Reviews
Most travellers know the story of the German bishop who, on his way to Rome, sent his servant ahead to scout for good places to have dinner, drink wine and sleep. The servant found an exceptionally good inn which he marked with the words Est! Est!! Est!!!. One more "Est" than agreed.
Hotel le Troncais is such an excellent stop for anyone who travels through France. Located close to the A71, the hotel offers simple, but clean rooms. After a long day in the car, a clearly marked 5 km walking trail around a small lake allows you to stretch your legs. And the highlight of the stay is the restaurant, serving delicious local dishes prepared to a very high standard. We certainly return when we next travel to Spain

This really is a delightful peaceful hotel, situated in woodland by the side of a lake. Very comfortable with the rooms furnished to a good standard and a lovely garden to relax in. The restaurant is excellent, a good menu and very good cuisine and has a nice relaxed atmosphere. The owner M. Malnou is very helpful and accommodating - and speaks good English.
We stayed here in 2019 and were very much looking forward to staying again, although our return was delayed. We look forward to staying again in the future

It's difficult to write a review that accurately describes this hotel. I'll start with the good news - the restaurant is outstanding in every way, truly first-class. It's expensive, but the food is well worth the price paid. Gracious service, and an elegant dining room.
As for the hotel - be well-informed if you make a booking. The lowest-priced rooms are in a small building (an old coach-house) adjacent to the main building. These rooms are very small, and relative to the size, they are overpriced by about 25%.
I understand that the rooms in the main building are larger, but be aware that they are significantly more expensive than the price you will see advertised on sites such as Booking.com, etc. That price is for the very small rooms in the coach house. But, although these rooms are very small, they are comfortable and well-equipped.
If you only want a place to sleep and don't intend to eat at the restaurant, this is probably not the best hotel choice in the area, even though it is on a very quiet and peaceful estate with beautiful grounds. But, wow, is the restaurant ever good! Elegant French dining at its best.

The surroundings are very pleasant and the building has quite a lot of charm but we didn't really enjoy our stay. Our room had been renovated but everything seemed cheap, the carpet, rough, the sheets a bit coarse. The bathroom had no ventilation and a shower cabin.
We had half-board. The dinning room was nicely decorated but food was just ok. Breakfast with products that seemed like the cheapest brands of a cheap supermarket.
The man that I assumed it was the owner made an effort to be pleasant and helpful. The lady, maybe the owner as well not so.
I think the hotel should offer better quality products in general.
Not a three star hotel in my opinion.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at this lovely hotel in the Forest of the Tronçais and had dinner both nights. The cuisine is truly superb and the atmosphere peaceful. Owners and staff make every effort to ensure your comfort. After a long day of sightseeing we lounged on their garden terrace. Dinner is served in a glass enclosed room with views of the garden. We will return for sure.
Location is perfect for sightseeing
We visited the nearby Château d’Ainay le Vieil with its expansive gardens and the Château de Sagonne. The Château de Meillant is just a ½ hour away and the beautiful city of Bourges, an hour.

We had been encouraged by other reviews to book this hotel as an overnight stopover. As described, it is set in a pretty setting, not too far off the autoroute.
However. we were rather disappointed with our stay. We had booked a "Double Confort" room for ourselves (the double was corect, I'm not sure about the "Confort")and a "Simple Douche Economique" for our son. We found ourselves placed in an attic in an old outhouse opposite the hotel, where the room smelt very musty when we entered. To access one side of the bed, you had to literally crawl along the floor underneath a low beam, or clamber across from the other side (see a previous T.A. review by a Belgian reviewer for an amusing description of what this entailed). We had also asked for sheets and blankets instead of a duvet on the bed when we booked a few months previously (the other hotels we stayed in on our trip managed this without a problem) but all this hotel could manage was a sheet underneath a duvet. There was also only one pillow each and when my wife asked for more, this was greeted as an unusual request.
We had been told the restaurant was popular so had booked half-board, to ensure we got a table. Usually this means you get offered a menu at a certain fixed price, and the option to "trade up" if you wish. However, here we were told that the half-board menu was fixed and we were offered no choice, although to be fair, the dishes were tasty.
Overall, we got an impression that the hotel could not really be bothered with single overnight stopovers, especially on a Friday night, so this is definitely a place we will be avoiding in future.

Lovely traditional hotel in a most beautiful setting on the edge of the Tronçais lake.
We stayed demi-pension and had a superb four course meal and a good breakfast the following morning. Demi-pension proved to be excellent value, without compromising on comfort.
Tronçais is slightly off the beaten track, but well worth the light detour from the autoroute, it is well placed for travellers wanting an overnight stay on their way to/ from the south.
We would certainly be happy to stay again on our next trip.

You drive along a long forest road and there it is, a house next to a lake. The four of us were put into the annexe we had no problems with this, except if you do have a heavy suitcase on wheels which we did (mea culpa) it's a bit of a pain hauling it though the gravel. As others have written the staff were charming. Upon our arrival, a chilled bottle of wine was swiftly delivered to the bench where we sitting (see lawn above) and we relaxed. We were on half-board for this stage of our journey but I think if I was to stay here again (and I would), I would stick to the 'a la carte' menu. This is no reflection on the hotel the food was terrific but too much for me in terms of its generosity.
There was no English menu but the Patron was happy to translate for us, stuffed but happy we went to bed! The bedrooms were small but comfortable with big double beds, excellent. Breakfast was generous and coffee excellent
The reason for the title of the review is that over the road from the hotel is an old iron works and iron/steel was sent to Paris to help build the famous tower

A hotel set in a forest with a lake next door, quiet, comfortable & offering excellent food—the breakfast rolls & croissants were to die for. This was one of the highlights of our French holiday, an en-route stay just for a single night, that made us wish we could stay longer. We'd recommend this to anyone who wants seclusion and a reviving rest.

Visited the restaurant, open to non residents, well worth a visit, food locally sourced was excellent, attention to detail obvious, great flavours, in an excellent convivial atmosphere, with a friendly service, English spoken.

Bonjour
