This was our fourth stay and we weren't disappointed. You feel at home at this hotel the minute you walk in the door. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and the lovely home cooked food very tasty and filling after a long days walking! Packed lunches available as are tea and scones mid afternoon. Rooms warm, clean and comfortable....

My boyfriend & I stayed at the Royal Oak for one night during a hike through the Lake District. Of all hotels on that trip, this was our favourite. Our room in the annex was huge and comfortable. We enjoyed the common room with books & sofas. But the best thing about the place was the service. The staff went...

This is a really old Hotel, but a very friendly staff, fun pub, extra large rooms with additional beds, and grapefruit body wash which smelled heavenly after a day of hiking The floors were a little tilted, but it only added character to the place. An extra touch was the real milk for our tea in our rooms. The dinner...

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night whilst walking the coast to Coast walk. The rooms were clean and tidy and larger than average. The bar was very small had did not have a large choce of drinks but you could go next door to the Scafell hotel for a decent beer, the food was a set menu (three courses)...

Stayed here on our coast to coast trip, really enjoyed our stay and set meal. Room was good in size and had a bath. Really enjoyed having no television or Wifi in rooms apart from lounge, more ally made people interact. Many people came back year on year to stay and I can understand why.

We arrived here at about 6pm after an epic 10 hour days hiking on the coast to coast. The host wasn't very welcoming and was quick to confirm our reservation for dinner. We didn't like the look of dinner and there was no alternative offered other than a vegetarian bake. We hadn't realised it was part of the B&B reservation...

Very well done Nuala and Susan, once again your hotel is impeccably run, excellent food, warm hospitality, marvellous scones and jam and great friendly staff, we stayed for a week's walking holiday for which the hotel and location is ideally placed; we have booked and look forward to seeing you again next year.

Stayed one night, but would happily have stayed longer in this unique little hotel. Lovely cosy lounges and a cute little bar. Table d'hote meal is good value and well cooked. Breakfast very nice. Rooms are nicely presented, though some bathrooms need updating. No TV in rooms, but a separate shared TV lounge where WiFi available.

Stayed here for one night during our Coast to Coast walk, it was like stepping back in time to a bygone age. A small comfortable hotel with a small bar and sitting rooms. There was also a TV lounge but no TV in the bedroom. A gong announced dinner at 7.30pm and everyone sat down together to the same 4...

Attention to detail throughout is a particular strength of the Royal Hotel. We loved the simplicity of dinner - all gathering then being summoned by the gong! Tasty veggie alternative to the main course and a lovely pudding. Comfortable room
