Nestled in a prime location, the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is lauded by many for its proximity to local attractions like the Riverwalk and downtown area. However, guests often find the atmosphere and rooms dated, with some noting a lack of modern amenities and maintenance. While the gym and views receive praise, the overall value is questioned, as high costs and inconsistent service have led to dissatisfaction. The hotel's cleanliness and service have garnered mixed reviews, with reports of delayed room servicing and unresponsive staff.

This is a huge hotel on the Detroit River. The location is fine-the Riverwalk is very nice, and much of downtown is within easy walking distance. My room was a typical Marriott-decent size, generic design features, good workspace and clean. The rating is pulled down because of price/value: On a busy weekend in Detroit, the price spiked to more than $800 per room, and there is simply no way in which that is a good value.

It's in the center of Detroit, has a good (comparative) security, and has a view from a high-rise. The room is spacious and the mattress is comfortable. I think it meets the requirements of a luxury hotel in these respects. However, it is quite different from the Marriott that Japanese people imagine. There are no amenities, no minibar, and the coffee maker was broken. The most frustrating thing is that there is no soundproofing at all, and the noise from the street comes into the room. I stayed on the 67th floor, so it should be more than 200m above ground, but since it is a commercial building with metal sashes and one pane of glass, the glass seems to resonate. There are shops and car exhibits on the first floor, which gives it a nice atmosphere, but it closes at 6pm and is almost impossible to use after work. The reception also seems to prioritize efficiency. I stayed for four nights, but I received a notification on the fourth day that my smart key was ready. I really feel like I'm in America. For safety reasons, I think it's good to have a wide range of hotel options, since I'll be traveling by car anyway. Note that WiFi is only free if you are a BonVoy member, so if you're staying here for work, you should be sure to register as a member in advance.

Let me start with the good part: The view from our River View room was great, made you really feel where Detroit is on the map. We got the room quickly and also were able to get late checkout which was good. Patrina and Jacky at Fuell restaurant made our breakfasts very special occasions, they are treasures. All the staff are smiling and helpful.
The beds were very good, which is half the battle. Once we got the AC working, we slept well, but there was an issue with the automatic setting that we didn't realize until too late (stifling on the first night). Bathroom was functional.
The bellboy said we should ask for anything we needed, but we didn't want to wait so we went without washcloths. They were there the second day. Go figure!
The impression of this hotel, and the building it's in, is of a place haunted by Covid that hasn't come back to whatever normal was (sad to learn the CVS had closed just days before our stay).
That said, the location is terrific and we enjoyed walking on the Riverwalk, visiting nearby buildings, and of course the views from our rooms which were high enough to look over the close-in towers. It's also an easy way to Greektown.
The hotel was a lot cheaper (at least for this senior) than other high-end downtown offerings, so I do not regret my choice.
Also a plus is the restaurant offering. Besides Fuell, we ate at Highlands, Andiamo and the Pantry, all of which were very very good.

Room was tired, worn and dirty. The air conditioning fan was very loud requiring a room change. The next day, they had not serviced the room by 5:30 pm, and it took hours, including multiple phone calls to the front desk and to the national Marriott line, to persuade them to clean the room. Poor customer service: explanations are constantly shifting about why they cannot drop off a fan or clean the room. The staff seem exhausted. The hotel owners who choose not to maintain or properly staff this property create a bad impression of the city of Detroit.

Wow! From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted with warm welcomes from the helpful staff. The room on the 68th floor was spectacular with views of the river and Canada. The area around this location is full of fun eating spots and places to stretch your legs. Thank you for a great stay.

I stayed here for 6 nights whilst on a business trip in town. On arrival, reception informed me that, should I need housekeeping, I would need to call reception the night before to book it in for the next day. Upon arriving into my room, there was a leftover takeaway salad moulding in my fridge, dust on the surfaces in my room, no cover on the duvet and hair stuck to the mirror in the bathroom. I called every night for the room to be cleaned the next day. But after 4 days, no housekeeping had come to clean. I then spoke to the ‘At your service’ team who informed me that housekeeping whilst you are staying does not exist (even though I called that team the night before and they said someone would come that next day, as well as reception telling me every day housekeeping were coming). I don’t understand how the staff at this hotel can’t communicate and all are telling me different things. Really poor service and Marriott should be ashamed. They claim to be cleaning the hotel constantly to keep guests safe, yet I have seen no cleaners, and they won’t even clean moulding food from my fridge (which isn’t even mine) and my room was full of dust. The room is also super noisy and you can hear the elevators going up and down at all times during the day, often waking me up at night too. Would never stay here again and do not recommend anyone to stay here should they want a clean, quiet stay in Detroit.

Older main line Marriott. Well situated if you’re among the few who need or want to be in downtown Detroit. Suggest looking elsewhere. Not many positives, maybe the gym was actually ok and snack bar staff were friendly. Beyond that, the check in was ridiculously poor and almost an insult to this longtime hi status member. Rooms are small and climate control is poor. This is critical as the gigantic windows are I think only single pane. So room would swing widely between cool and hot, same experience for other guests we talked to. Concierge lounge was amateurishly operated, very loud (poor furnishing choices) closed about half the time and all weekend (crazy for someone who counts on this for beverages and whatever during my stay). Better, quieter part of lounge was roped off and staff made sure there was no mistake Breakfast was adequate one day but it was closed the next day. Eventually was told I should have been offered a voucher at check in. Too many small annoyances to disregard. All singularly forgivable but collectively overall a poor experience. Look elsewhere.

The people who work at this hotel - from the GM, Front Desk Mgr, security and F&B staff - are all incredibly friendly and helpful. That said, it is clear this Marriott is still suffering from the impact of the pandemic based on the lack of housekeeping staff and condition of the rooms. Housekeeping was on a 24-hour in advance request basis, though towels and amenities could be requested at any time. There is not much in the immediate area of the hotel, though the riverwalk is nice. The Renaissance Center has a CVS, post office, one men’s clothing store, and a few eateries, but much of this enormous facility is unoccupied.

This is clearly a volume hotel with a mission of filling rooms. With somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 rooms…once you’re checked in, you’re basically on your own.

We called ahead a week early to request a crib—no problem, confirmed. We confirmed the crib at check-in. Yep, you’re set. No crib in the room. After 3 visits to the front desk, 5 phone calls blaming housekeeping, and no crib the first night, we were told they ran out. No effort to correct or even help improvise.

The bellmen were nice enough, but didn’t recognize us 30 minutes later. They were nice to hold our bags after checkout, but it took a while to find someone when we wanted to pick them up again. The front desk gave us the bare minimum info, probably because it was somehow busy with a line every single time I walked by. I wanted to ask someone for advice on things to do, but no one was available.

The lobby and complex are nice and impressive (easy to get lost), but the rooms are very standard and somewhat aged. WiFi is not free. Very convenient to the river walk, but somehow a 10 min walk from the closest good restaurants. I ordered a la carte at breakfast the first morning and overheard someone being told about the complimentary breakfast buffet. Found out the next morning that the buffet is $40+ per person after tax and tip. Appreciated the comfy beds and mini fridge with space for leftovers.

Horrible experience here and I would recommend for anyone wanting to stay here to carefully consider your options. We booked this hotel because of the view and because of the location. Based on the price and the total for three nights, I was shocked at the type of service we received. Let me point out that I work in the hospitality industry, in a resort, and this is my first review I have left for any business. On the morning of 2/25/2023, I let a front desk agent know that all of our keys, three in total for our party, had stopped working and that we believed something was wrong with the electronic door because it no longer lit up when we tried to enter our room. Room Number 4913. I also informed the front desk agent that we would be gone the majority of the day and they ensured me that it would be fixed upon my return. My party and I returned to our room at 9:00 pm on 2/25/2023 and our keys did not work and the lock did not light up. We returned back down stairs, was told to try again, and that someone had been called. We were also told to use the phone on the floor to call back down to the front desk should retrying the keys not work. Neither the lock, keys, or phone worked so two of us waited in the hallway, locked out of our room, and the other party member when back down to the front desk. At 10:35 pm, over an hour and a half of waiting in the hallway, and multiple guests walking by on the 49th floor seeing this, I decided to go back down to the front desk. I spoke with Matt who was wearing a blazer, and within 5 minutes someone was sent up and the lock’s batteries were replaced by an employee named Bill. At checkout, the question was asked how was your stay by a front desk agent. The response was we were not happy, totally disappointed in the amount of money that we paid for the service we received, and reminded the front desk agent of the locked out incident. To my dismay, the front desk agent replied, “we are just here to check you out, not for anything else.” Are you kidding me! I may never stay at another Marriot again, much less ever return to this hotel. And shame on these staff members that provided horrible customer service and no service recovery at all. I understand that mistakes happen, and I understand staffing shortages, but medication that had to be taken at certain time was locked in this room and the fact that the issue was not taken seriously shows the lack of training and etiquette.
