Atmosphere
Luxurious
Travelers appreciate the Grand Hotel's luxurious, vibrant decor, live music, and unique furnishings. However, some guests found the music too loud and the atmosphere pretentious.
- wesley446Aug 2023 • 3 contributions...Like many of the areas around Lake Michigan, Mackinac Island was not lacking in beautiful and picturesque Victorian homes and gardens but, add to this the horse drawn carriages, the atmosphere comes alive with a sense of traveling back in time with one foot remaining in the present...
- Joe DJul 2023 • 4 contributions...Alex Graham tends the brilliant music all over Grand Hotel, and this year Daniel Rottenberg offers some ragtime fun each evening as guests are gathering for dinner...
- McKenna CJul 2023 • 2 contributions...Every single detail is beautifully crafted to bring your mind and body to a simpler and slower yet exceedingly more elegant and ostentatious time. The space, people, and entire experience are stunning and make you feel like nobility from generations ago...
- Emily BJul 2023 • 1 contribution...The real kick in the teeth moment was when I wandered down to the Grand’s Outlet store and saw exact bedding and decor items from our room for extreme discounts for sale...
- DeannieJun 2023 • 199 contributions...Our room was above the piano in the parlor and we could hear the music just like we were sitting in the parlor itself...
- Franke1953Jun 2023 • 1 contribution...Here are the things we loved: the view from the hotel porch, the gorgeous flowers all over the hotel grounds, the elegance of the hotel carpet, furnishings in the public areas, and the gym, though small, was adequate... In general the room was nice, but the carpet had numerous holes in it, the pillows on the couches were stained, and the furniture needed lots of touchups...
- Steven ROct 2022 • 7 contributions...It was beautiful and the service, food, decorations were superb. A very good jazz trio was featured for every dinner, a harpist played for tea time in the afternoon, and a decent band played for entertainment in the ballroom... There was also a very good pianist/singer in the Cupula Bar on the top floor...
- BeezhjackOct 2022 • 215 contributions...The dinner band was outstanding as well... The afternoon tea was very well attended and with the harp player it was very enjoyable...
- TinajfarrellOct 2022 • 65 contributions...Every little detail added to the charm of the hotel, the real metal room keys, the turn down service with chocolate on our pillows every night, the beautiful flowers that were still in bloom on the hotel grounds, so many little things that were just so perfect...
- Robert LOct 2022 • 2 contributions...Music during dinner was a bit too loud...
- sarna2022Oct 2022 • 1 contribution...The music wasn’t suitable for Grand Experience seniors. We expected big band music... Music should be geared to the guests, in this case overwhelmingly seniors...
- DrsHusbandOct 2022 • 1 contribution...The overall feeling and charm of the place was right up our alley, as lovers of old buildings and 1930 to 60s era jazz, the ambiance, evening dress code and dancing really made the experience special and for this there is the 4th star...
- Travel_QueenY2KOct 2022 • 29 contributions...The music playing in the dining room, Terrace Lounge Parlor and other places throughout the Grand in simply beautiful, the rooms are amazing and service can’t be beat...
- DNLelandOct 2022 • 1 contribution...My lovely wife really enjoys going dancing in the evening after dinner...
- AmesOct 2022 • 2 contributions...It was a nice break in the day and gave us a chance to just relax and enjoy the music and environment...
- Dorothy EOct 2022 • 4 contributions...My "Daffodil Room" was beautiful with a view of the tea garden and the front porch...
- pattiyoungSep 2022 • 7 contributionsThe Grand Hotel is fine if you like over done decor with beautiful fabrics and trims and a vibrant color scheme... Dining should have a relaxed atmosphere, be quiet, so that you can enjoy and savor each course... There you felt rushed, the food was often not hot, with an atmosphere of “slops on”...
- John RSep 2022 • 5 contributions...The meals were excellent and they had live bands in the dining room & again later in the evening in a ballroom where large crowds gathered for dancing!...
- lawtonjl2002Sep 2022 • 413 contributions...Live piano player set the tone...
- Dallas DSep 2022 • 7 contributions...It’s still beautifully maintained, still providing harp music at tea and piano jazz in the dining room...

Rooms
Uncomfortable
Travelers have mixed opinions about the rooms at the hotel, with some praising the cleanliness, uniqueness, and pleasant views, while others criticize the high prices, lack of amenities, and noise due to thin walls.
- Fearless34721Aug 2023 • 2 contributionsWe have been coming to the Grand Hotel for 30 years, in fact, I made it known before we arrived hoping to get one of the rooms we requested. Not only was our request for a room upgrade not granted but we had the worst room we have ever had there (187)... The room was a small interior room with no view, the bathtub was very small and hard to get into because the walls were very tall...
- john aAug 2023 • 7 contributions...rooms are horrible and loud, you could hear everything that was been said between guests and hotel employees walls are paper thin...
- Tom LAug 2023 • 7 contributions...The hotel has over 600 rooms and many, the more expensive ones, face the lake and majestic Mackinaw bridge... One word of caution, the room views can be a bit "iffy" when booking the loser cost rooms (and they aren't cheap) so be mindful of the room you select or are given when checking in...
- St Paul Pontiac AAug 2023 • 1 contribution...The second at 8am asking to clean my room because I didn't put the do not disturb sign on my door... My room had coffee, but no coffee maker... The room had AC and then an additional portable AC hooked up to the window, however wasn't properly installed...
- Sandra BJul 2023 • 7 contributions...Needed to change to 3 people and spoke to reservations to upgrade to a deluxe king lakeview balcony deluxe. The woman assured me that we had a front facing high room which would afford a perfect view of fireworks on the 4th... Arrived on June 30 and they put us in a west facing 1st floor room with NO view of fireworks... He then promised a room available on July 3 to move... Asked to speak to the manager and the desk people disappeared into the back room and left me standing at the desk... The room we’re in has chipped paint falling off the balcony railings...
- Emily BJul 2023 • 1 contribution...Conferences usually get a discounted rate for booking in the same hotel, so we took advantage of that and a king room came to be about $500 a night, which while not a steal is also not a bad deal when rooms can sometimes be $700+. This would be a good thing, except… our room looks positively aged and in disrepair... Our room’s carpet is threadbare in places, and I can see they patched the carpets in other spaces of the hotel, so I’m not really sure why they would allow a guest room to be this bad... I submitted an in-house survey while going the wifi network at around 10pm and we received a phone call to our room while sleeping, followed by a text message to my husband’s phone from the front of house staff acknowledging our review and offering a comp’ed bottle of wine for our trouble... The real kick in the teeth moment was when I wandered down to the Grand’s Outlet store and saw exact bedding and decor items from our room for extreme discounts for sale...
- Jacqueline AJun 2023 • 2 contributionsWe were originally charged $1400 per night for a room the size of motel 6 and a bathroom only big enough for one person!...
- DeannieJun 2023 • 199 contributions...Our room was above the piano in the parlor and we could hear the music just like we were sitting in the parlor itself. The walls were paper thin, we could hear people talking in the rooms surrounding us, walking down the hall and a dog constantly barking down the hall...
- Franke1953Jun 2023 • 1 contribution...The room rates were extremely high, but we expected this... What we did not like was: that we paid for 2 “amenities” to be in our room upon arrival... In general the room was nice, but the carpet had numerous holes in it, the pillows on the couches were stained, and the furniture needed lots of touchups... At $2000 per night including the meal plan for a room with no view, with a balcony with one chair we think the Grand Hotel is not a good value...
- GinripJun 2023 • 1 contribution...For the first time staying, our assigned room was smaller than usual and the conversations from room next to us was heard making this a bit uncomfortable... The restricted window opening was not necessary in our all adult room... I requested each day a room change but Dallas and Michael said they could not accommodate... Thank you, Ginny (Virginia Ripslinger) Room 388...
- loveisblissJun 2023 • 429 contributionsStayed here for 2 nights with a bus tour group... Although the rooms are very nice, you do need to understand that they do not have all of the usual technical amenities that we are accustomed to...
- RitzMay 2023 • 20 contributions...Note that formal attire (Jacket/tie for men; formal dress/pants for women) is required after 6PM daily in the parlor and dining room, so pack your suit...
- 853jaclynjOct 2022 • 8 contributionsWe were in a suite, and when you spend $5,000+ for three nights, you want it to feel like vacation... When we arrived, there were dirty clothes from guests past in the room...
- Daryl POct 2022 • 4 contributions...We originally thought we booked a three day stay for 1500 dollars but the hotel claimed it was two... Room was beautiful but walls paper thin and air conditioner so loud that it woke you up every time it turned on...
- John SOct 2022 • 3 contributions...The room was small, the bed uncomfortable, the room temperature too hot or to cold,, and it smelled funny... It was overcrowded -we couldn't even get into some of the events...
- DrsHusbandOct 2022 • 1 contribution...Same with the room, no robes, single shampoo bottle, no moisturizer or conditioner and dirty dishes and glasses were often left in the room when it was cleaned...
- layla627Oct 2022 • 6 contributions...They have raised prices on everything and cut back on amenities that made The Grand so special...
- Dorothy EOct 2022 • 4 contributionsThis was my first time staying at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and I was definitely pleased with the service and the accommodations... My "Daffodil Room" was beautiful with a view of the tea garden and the front porch...
- KCfromKCNYSep 2022 • 288 contributions...We had a lake view room and the windows were large enough to enjoy the beautiful view...
- June NSep 2022 • 14 contributionsThe hotel and rooms were great, I thought that the check in process was great until I learned two days into my stay that I was being charged to eat whether I ate at the hotel or not...

Value
Overpriced
Many travelers express dissatisfaction with the hotel's high costs, citing expensive meals, drinks, and additional charges, while some appreciated the food and considered the overall experience worth the price.
- Sandra BJul 2023 • 7 contributionsOriginally booked a partial lake view balcony with partial view of fireworks for 4 in February - paid in full... He said he’d refund the surcharge we’d paid (over $1700) but that still didn’t get us any fireworks view... Looked at it today - small, queen bed, no room for the rollaway... Main dining food was overdone and cold...
- Emily BJul 2023 • 1 contribution...Conferences usually get a discounted rate for booking in the same hotel, so we took advantage of that and a king room came to be about $500 a night, which while not a steal is also not a bad deal when rooms can sometimes be $700+... The real kick in the teeth moment was when I wandered down to the Grand’s Outlet store and saw exact bedding and decor items from our room for extreme discounts for sale... I truly can’t believe they are utilizing bedding they are currently selling off at a public outlet that they advertise... All in all, I would say I am extremely disappointed after seeing the Grand as a little girl, our stay is so bad... We stay at a lot of boutique and historic hotels across the county and have never had such poor accommodations, especially at this price point... Come pay $10 and get a drink on the porch, but stay at probably any other hotel on the island...
- DonnaJul 2023 • 4 contributions...We were very disappointed in the service we received and we felt like the food could have been much better considering the steep price... Just sayin the experience was a bit disappointing ☹️...
- Jacqueline AJun 2023 • 2 contributionsWe were originally charged $1400 per night for a room the size of motel 6 and a bathroom only big enough for one person! After complaining they gave us a $280 credit and some meals which were terrible to average, so the total cost was still $1200 per night!... The worst hotel experience and the most expensive ever...
- Franke1953Jun 2023 • 1 contribution...The room rates were extremely high, but we expected this... What we did not like was: that we paid for 2 “amenities” to be in our room upon arrival... We would recommend not coming to the hotel during the summer months, though the heavy convention visitors probably continues in other months... At checkout we were charged for a coffee and several other things in the coffee shop that we never entered... There were also $250 in odd breakfast charges... At $2000 per night including the meal plan for a room with no view, with a balcony with one chair we think the Grand Hotel is not a good value...
- DeannieJun 2023 • 199 contributionsWe stayed at The Grand Hotel for one night with dinner included... The hotel will also nickel and dime you to death with resort fees, luggage transfer fees, taxi service, etc..... I guess it is called "The Grand Hotel" because it will cost you a grand to stay there, not because it is grand itself... On a positive note, the hotel and the grounds itself are beautiful but I would save your money and just get a day pass for $10 and stay elsewhere...
- Hailey LMay 2023 • 1 contribution...Hosts made us get buffet even though it was only 30 minutes left and 150 is ridiculous. Manager or something came over asking if we were done with buffet we didn’t even get 2 “courses” didn’t even get to try the desserts... Just found out my boyfriend got charged twice too, absolutely garbage... Only negative thing that happened on our vacation was that hotel...
- Karly SOct 2022...I was worried when it was sold in 2019; I don't know if I changed or it's the new management, but the magic is gone... We had better meals at the Yankee Rebel Tavern... I would have understood if this was the beginning of the season, but it was mid-October... I felt like the Grand was "too old" for me (and I'm 50)... But I don't think I could recommend the Grand to anyone under 65; Baby Boomers will find the reheated food nostalgic...
- Daryl POct 2022 • 4 contributions...We originally thought we booked a three day stay for 1500 dollars but the hotel claimed it was two. The dinner the first night was 285 dollars and wine for the house was an extra 25 dollars a glass... I called the front desk to say how disappointed I was and they offered a 3 night stay for basically the price of two nights that included breakfast and dinner... But they charge for everything and our stay was still close to 2500 for 3 days even with the package... If you drink 3 glasses of wine with a five course meal, it’s easy to spend 200 a day on wine alone... But again it was built over a hundred years ago... Horses are wonderful and nostalgic but 14 dollars for the short ride to town per couple...
- 853jaclynjOct 2022 • 8 contributionsWe were in a suite, and when you spend $5,000+ for three nights, you want it to feel like vacation... These are the little details that make the experience feel cheap...
- AngelaOct 2022 • 21 contributions...We booked our stay during a sale, where they listed what you would receive in that package... We were told we would receive discounts at their restaurants, but most of the Grand Hotel restaurants were not open, and the one that was open was very resistant to give us the discount...
- day trip travelerOct 2022 • 77 contributions...A breakfast and dinner is included with each night of your stay and you will not be disappointed, five course dinner and buffet/menu for breakfast, five stars all the way...
- Steven OOct 2022 • 27 contributions...It was very expensive but we chose the Fall Offer that included breakfast, lunch and dinner... The hot tub was barely warmer than a bath and the heated pool and was frankly a waste of time to visit and takes a lot of effort to go down the hill to it only to be disappointed... The average glass of wine was $ 20 US, about $ 28 Cdn... That is almost 3 times what we would pay for wine at home in Canada for a glass... We left $ 5 at our bedside table after the first night and cleaning staff did not take it!... This was closing weekend, yes they close end of October...
- john DOct 2022 • 7 contributions...Food and drink were very good and we expect restaurant wine markups of 200 or 300 percent, but our Malbec was closer to 500% over most liquor store prices...
- Go595616Oct 2022 • 11 contributions...The portions were extremely small and the food was not hot. The dinner rolls tasted like they came from a grocery store... These dinners ere over 100 dollars... The 45 dollar breakfast was better, but 45 dollars is way too much... In the bar 20 dollars for a glass of average wine... the least expensive room here is over 800 dollars... If you are planning on visiting stay somewhere else and pay 10 dollars to tour the property...
- Q4656CCjohndOct 2022 • 3 contributions...Drink prices were as you'd expect: very high... The added insult of a noisy elevator next to our room just contributed to our (two couples) decision to avoid the Grand Hotel in the future...
- sallison63Oct 2022 • 7 contributions...Food was great and room was lovely though located directly under the Cupola Bar.. Costs have increased greatly (room, breakfast, dinner was $1,200+) and tipping has been added - not required. House wine was $22 per glass...
- John SOct 2022 • 3 contributions...And all the "extras" were overpriced... $68 for " high tea" for example...
- layla627Oct 2022 • 6 contributions...They have raised prices on everything and cut back on amenities that made The Grand so special. We will never go back again.. We used to love The Grand and stayed many times We will stay elsewhere when visiting the island...
- RichieRich33Sep 2022 • 130 contributions...Even though the main dining room had a good dinner and breakfast, both were considerably over priced for the food quality and service. Less so for the Woods Restaurant which seemed like a better value...

Cleanliness
Immaculate
Guests generally found the hotel and its grounds to be very clean and well-maintained, with many praising the housekeeping staff for their hard work and attentiveness.
- Fearless34721Aug 2023 • 2 contributions...The grounds were clean and staff was very friendly, except at check-in, the "manager on duty" at check in cared very little that we are repeat guests who brought friends along this time who also had a subpar room...
- Melissa CAug 2023 • 22 contributions...Housekeeping is clearly working very hard...
- St Paul Pontiac AAug 2023 • 1 contribution...The second at 8am asking to clean my room because I didn't put the do not disturb sign on my door...
- John CAug 2023 • 8 contributions...The bathroom has been nicely remodeled and is large and very functional...
- Fronkie91Jul 2023 • 1 contribution...There were multiple days where my wife had to hunt down a housekeeper to get a washcloth or bath mat towel to shower before dinner...
- BVI TravelerJul 2023 • 11 contributions...I was expecting a closet for the price we paid, but turned out we had a spacious room with two comfortable double beds, a sizable (and very clean) bathroom, and plenty of room to spread out our stuff...
- Joe DJul 2023 • 4 contributions...Full hotel maid service is restored and ensures the rooms stay clean, and neat, and comfortable...
- billhollowskyJul 2023 • 304 contributions...Everything, and I mean everything is well cared for and maintained from the rooms, to the halls, to the porch, to grounds...
- parcvueJul 2023 • 109 contributions...The hotel has never looked better improvements inside and out of this historic a must do. The public spaces look and feel fresh and our room was delightful...
- NancyO7342023Jun 2023 • 1 contribution...The room was clean and convenient for us on the Parlor level... The maid service visited our room at least 3 times a day to keep our room tidy...
- Kathryn SOct 2022 • 4 contributions...The shampoo wax the smallest one tiny bottle I e ever seen...
- 853jaclynjOct 2022 • 8 contributions...In the bathroom, there was a bar of soap, a bottle of lotion and a bottle of shampoo... I don't need a new towel everyday; that is a waste, but there wasn't any night where the dirty washcloths from our bathroom were taken away...
- Dorothy EOct 2022 • 4 contributions...Housekeeping did an excellent job and I was very impressed with the level of service...
- Steven OOct 2022 • 27 contributions...The hotel was impeccably clean and even the basic room facing the back was lovely... The flowers on the porch were beautiful and the chairs were clean and not dusty!... We left $ 5 at our bedside table after the first night and cleaning staff did not take it!...
- Val StjohnOct 2022 • 2 contributions...The room was clean and all the staff with whom I interacted were friendly and helpful...
- jeffpetersmiOct 2022 • 2 contributions...Our room was expertly cleaned and kept daily by the hotel staff... Thank you all for making our stay perfect!...
- eddiewolfeOct 2022 • 1 contribution...On a positive note the room was very nice as always and room service exceptional...
- JHang86Sep 2022 • 1 contribution...After we'd leave to explore the island for the day, we'd return to a clean room. We'd get ready to go to dinner and then come back to a once again clean room and chocolate left on our pillows...
- Peaches5772022Sep 2022 • 1 contribution...Housekeeping staff was fabulous and very friendly...
- Michael FSep 2022 • 2 contributions...I loved the history, the hotel was spotless, and the staff very friendly...

Service
Inconsistent
The service at the hotel is generally good, with the staff being attentive and professional. However, some guests complained about inconsistencies, lack of training, and oversights in service.
- AmesOct 2022 • 2 contributions...The attention to detail and the friendliness and kindness of each employee that I came in contact with was very much appreciated. It was nice receiving text messages daily in regards to events going on at the resort to not only remind me of possible things that might interest us in doing but also to just stay in the know... This was the first visit that I received them and they were very much appreciated... Another plus this trip was knowing that the pool was actually still open while we were there... We partook in the Afternoon Tea this trip and are so glad we did...
- DrsHusbandOct 2022 • 1 contribution...There were however some pretty glaring oversights in maintenance and service... The service was also something my wife and I were surprised by... I have spent roughly 15 years in food service, starting as a porter in a hotel (none so nice as the grand of course) and then in kitchens as a cook and then chef... that I enjoyed but can't place, and not ONCE could one of the service staff answer a question about what they were serving... Along with this it seemed lacking in training on formal meal service with people reaching across people to bus or serve plates and pour water... Didn't bother us personally but if you claim to offer exceptional service you have to walk the walk afterward...
- 853jaclynjOct 2022 • 8 contributions...In the bathroom, there was a bar of soap, a bottle of lotion and a bottle of shampoo... Most of the staff was kind and lovely, but sometimes service was disappointing... When we were in the ballroom, it took 20 minutes for my father to receive his drink which would have been understandable had it been busy, but there were only four tables taken, and the server had a conversation with another employee before leaving to go get the order... The doormen would open the door by extending out his arm rather than stepping outside and holding it so you don't have to pass sideways when carrying bags... Service is in the details, and there's opportunity for improvement...
- Val StjohnOct 2022 • 2 contributions...When I went to the front desk about changing rooms, they showed me another room, making sure it was to my liking, instead of just assigning another one to me. The service in the dining room was top notch... I have a few food allergies and the wait staff worked with me and the chef to ensure I wasn’t eating anything I should not, Breakfast and dinner menus offered many different choices... The wait staff was very attentive at every meal... There was a bed turn down service that left chocolates on the pillow each night... I rented a bicycle from the hotel also... I wish the young man who had explained the gear system had also mentioned how to adjust the seat - that would have been helpful up front instead of me having to figure it out myself... I don’t know how much the room cost because I was part of an all inclusive bus tour... The room was clean and all the staff with whom I interacted were friendly and helpful...
- AngelaOct 2022 • 21 contributions...However, when we arrived we were told no meal plan for us. We were told we would receive discounts at their restaurants, but most of the Grand Hotel restaurants were not open, and the one that was open was very resistant to give us the discount...
- jamieB2075XZOct 2022 • 1 contribution...The food was delicious, room service was prompt... The front desk did seem to get a little snippy when we asked a question regarding our luggage request back to the ferry- so we ended up just bringing it ourselves...
- Steven OOct 2022 • 27 contributions...Had a great stay on my birthday Oct 28/29/30... The breakfast and lunch buffet was great, Dinners were good although portions were very small but just right to ensure we ate them all!... The only thing we found was that the staff in the dinning room were inconsistent in their knowledge of dinner and anticipating our needs... On our last dinner, I was annoyed that our server kept calling my wife 'Moma' and me 'Papa'... He also complained that I had not closed my menu which is the way he would know I am ready to order!... Staff need to pay attention to who they are seating and find us people who are as smartly dressed as we were to sit next to... The hot tub was barely warmer than a bath and the heated pool and was frankly a waste of time to visit and takes a lot of effort to go down the hill to it only to be disappointed... The flowers on the porch were beautiful and the chairs were clean and not dusty!... We left $ 5 at our bedside table after the first night and cleaning staff did not take it!...

- day trip travelerOct 2022 • 77 contributions...The hotel goes out of its way to make the weekend magical for its guests... It is 135 years young and the staff goes out of its way to make your stay magical... A breakfast and dinner is included with each night of your stay and you will not be disappointed, five course dinner and buffet/menu for breakfast, five stars all the way... The staff is multi-international and they truly enjoy their jobs and making you feel welcome...
- Steven ROct 2022 • 7 contributions...We were especially impressed with one of our servers from Indonesia named Danelia and one of the stable managers named Jeff who spent a great deal of time explaining the lives and positive treatment of the island's majestic carriage horses... There are many wonderful places to stay on the island but the Grand Hotel is the upmost in first class hospitality...
- cindysrcoordOct 2022 • 1 contribution...the MParks Grand Experience had wonderful programming and the Hotel accommodated these events in a seamless manner... My only complaint is that I could not stay longer!...
- Daryl POct 2022 • 4 contributions...We originally thought we booked a three day stay for 1500 dollars but the hotel claimed it was two... - TinajfarrellOct 2022 • 65 contributions...I was very impressed with how attentive the staff was, how clean our room was and how amazing our breakfast and dinner was every day! Every little detail added to the charm of the hotel, the real metal room keys, the turn down service with chocolate on our pillows every night, the beautiful flowers that were still in bloom on the hotel grounds, so many little things that were just so perfect... Oh and get the Grand Pecan Ball, Yum!!!...

- Kathryn SOct 2022 • 4 contributionsMy husband surprised me for my birthday to stay here... It was not crowded and waitresses were clearly not interested... We had a reservation for the Woods and Australian waiting waited 45 minutes and we’re told to be on time... The tour of the museum horse barn wax a young Wonsan who led us there and told us to read... The concierge also made a reservation for us to go home but messed up sending us to the Woods restaurant which was not even open...

Amenities
Abundant
Travelers appreciate the hotel's range of amenities such as the pool, dining options, and views from the rooms. However, some guests felt overcharged for certain services and amenities.
- 853jaclynjOct 2022 • 8 contributionsWe were in a suite, and when you spend $5,000+ for three nights, you want it to feel like vacation... In the bathroom, there was a bar of soap, a bottle of lotion and a bottle of shampoo... The doormen would open the door by extending out his arm rather than stepping outside and holding it so you don't have to pass sideways when carrying bags...
- Val StjohnOct 2022 • 2 contributionsSpent two nights at the Grand Hotel... When I went to the front desk about changing rooms, they showed me another room, making sure it was to my liking, instead of just assigning another one to me...
- Steven ROct 2022 • 7 contributions...The hotel is in excellent shape and had been remodeled and upgraded since we'd been there prior. It was beautiful and the service, food, decorations were superb... A very good jazz trio was featured for every dinner, a harpist played for tea time in the afternoon, and a decent band played for entertainment in the ballroom... There was also a very good pianist/singer in the Cupula Bar on the top floor... We were especially impressed with one of our servers from Indonesia named Danelia and one of the stable managers named Jeff who spent a great deal of time explaining the lives and positive treatment of the island's majestic carriage horses... The accommodations are more than five star and view of the straights of Mackinaw and the Mackinaw Bridge especially at night are stunning... There are many wonderful places to stay on the island but the Grand Hotel is the upmost in first class hospitality...

Yes, there have been significant updates, such as the pool, entry area, bathrooms, etc... You want a relaxing afternoon tea with beautiful live music?... You want to enjoy the vista of the Cupola Bar at cocktail hour?... We will stay at the Iriquois this season and plan on exploring Stonecliffe...
- Marcia BJun 2022 • 146 contributionsI stayed at the Grand Hotel for two nights while and on a tour of Michigan... The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner... For a special charge you can enjoy afternoon tea... The hotel boast that it has the world's longest porch... On the porch you can sit on a rocking chair and have a view of the gardens, the pool, the lawn games and the lake... You can go for a walk on the grounds and search for the secret garden... This hotel is very pricey but I think it was worth the experience...

Detailed Reviews
My husband and I attended The Murder Mystery Weekend at The Grand Hotel. We LOVED it. The hotel was clean, accommodating, stately and historic. Our room was decorated in colorful, alluring wallpaper with matching drapes and upholstery. It was a spacious room located on the fourth floor which did not have a water view. The bed was comfortable, and due to Covid, we did not have daily housekeeping which was fine by me. The room had been sterilized before we arrived, and I liked the fact that no on came into the room after we checked in. The delicious food had an excellent presentation, and the serving staff served the food in such a formal manner. Mr. Eric Yelton did a superb job of checking to see if we enjoyed our meals. I told him it was my birthday, and that evening I had a surprise, a reserved window seat. Thank, Mr. Yelton, for you kindness. I also like the woman at the front desk bb the name of Desiree. When I called for distilled water for my CPAP, she was so kinds and accommodating. Everything was first class at this hotel. It was so elegant and gorgeous. I experienced the grandeur of the past when manners and elegance ruled. TheMurder Mystery was a lot of fun. The weekend package was very reasonably priced and offered a lot of perks. I had the best birthday ever, and I made so many memories by visiting The Grand Hotel.

+1
The Grand never disappoints when it comes to the cozy well appointed rooms, fabulous menu, wonderfully gracious service and lovely gardens, even in October! We stayed two nights and golfed at the Jewel both days. The course is beautiful, the views are amazing and the taxi between each 9 holes is unique......but I purchased the Pure Michigan package which included our unlimited golf but not the cart fees. These cart fees are way overpriced at $25 per person per each 9 holes! So, in two days we incurred a $200 cart fee; so be prepared. My only other concern, and it is only due to Covid19, was that I don't recall reading anywhere or being told that we would need to call for any housekeeping including fresh towels. It is understandable and appreciated that staff is not allowed to be in your room when you are, but it should clearly stated somewhere; so that after returning from a full day of golf that happened to be wet and cold, we looked forward to a hot shower with clean towels before dressing for dinner; but the room had not been attended at all. We appreciate all the efforts and extra lengths they have taken to remain open to guests; and we will continue to visit this Grand Place.

From the time I was greeted at the hotel and kindly shown where I could corral my bicycle for my stay, I felt relaxed and welcomed. Keeping mind that this Grand Hotel is over 125 years olds, it was beautiful, colorful, comfortable and entertaining! The dinners were beyond relaxing and excellent!!! I wondered through the hotel during the daylight hours, absorbing the beautiful views from many different heights on the many different floors. I thought the hotel wouldn't be as entertaining at night but was I wrong. There was music, many places to sit and visit with other friendly visitors and places to partake in many special drinks!
Thank you for the most relaxing trip of a life time!!

The hotel is very charming with beautiful manicured grounds with a beautiful parlor, sitting and dining areas. We had an overpriced meal in the dining room that was delicious but the portion was not commensurate with price. We had biked the island twice that day and were very hungry. We were still hungry after the meal but thankfully we got dessert so was able to feel satiated. O
Our lake view from our room was amazing. Beds were comfortable. We did pay for the cookies and milk turndown service and that was nice and since we missed dinner we were pretty hungry. The lack of room service and in general snacks and available meals on the go was disappointing especially after we missed the fact everything closes early. However understanding it’s still COVID caused, we chalked it up to a lesson learned. Eat early! Word to the wise, go to Doud’s market to get waters, sandwiches and snacks for the room before they close as the meals at the Grand are way over-priced. The Gate House is excellent. We had a great meal there and they brought out complimentary Prosecco, dessert, a card and a gift for our anniversary! It was a wonderful surprise and we will be back there as the food was delicious and plentiful as well.
The rooms need attention. The carpeting is in need of replacement with lots of stains and wear. While it’s meant to be old fashioned/historical, the color schemes are loud and tacky and not classy or elegant as the objective should be for an 1887 built hotel. Several cracks noted in the ceiling and molding noted and doors were in pretty bad shape overall. The balcony had duct tape over cracks in the pipe. There were only about 5 tv channels that worked but tv was intermittent. Shower pressure was terrible. You could hear every word and bodily function of the guests next door.
We wanted the whole experience of the Grand Hotel but we paid over a grand each night for not so grand accommodations. I really hope that the owners take action to maintain the rooms, provide amenities for guests and not just focus on putting in a pool and making the outside look appealing.
I travel frequently for my job and have stayed at amazing hotels all over the world for a fraction of the cost that was paid for our room. I would recommend guests stay at Mission Point Resort where we have stayed before and avoid staying at the Grand. Pay the $10 admission to see the place but save yourself some money and disappointment and stay elsewhere. We won’t stay there again.

My family and I visited for our daughters 15th birthday, we had stayed one time prior about 5 years ago. We knew the pool would not be open but figured the other activities would be available and thought hotel would be great even with coronavirus going on. Sadly this was not the case. After checkin we could not find our room, along with 3 other groups , as there had been a fire drill all the fire doors were closed, and no staff had bothered to open them. We went back down to front desk and all they could do was show us a map, no one could be bothered to assist until one of other parties flagged down someone.
Our room was rather tired, a view of rooftop of another building, which I knew we were getting an interior room, but with high rate and low occupancy seemed rather ridiculous . We tried to call housekeeping as there was only 1 bottle each shampoo, etc and phone did not work , so back down to front desk. Upon return to room kids wanted to watch tv while unpacking and tv did not work. Back down to front desk to ask for assistance with this issue. All of these items were addressed within an hour or so. Later that day after dinner went to put some things in the mini fridge , that didn't work but didn't even bother to notify anyone.
We had brought tennis rackets and balls with us, there was only 1 court out of 3 playable, which we did play on the 2nd day. We saw them working on 1 other court. We rented bikes and got 4 miles around the island before running into a road closed sign, no knowledge of this before hand from guys that rented us the bikes by the pool house. My husband went to buy us drinks from the small store afterwards and charge to our room, man could not find our info. When my husband went to the front desk to figure out the issue, they could not find our info and questioned if we had checked in, and this was on the second day of our stay!
While none of these issues are a big deal by themselves, even discounting the fact that the hotel is recently opened, with a hotel charging these rates and not having many basics addressed is unacceptable. Many of these items should have been taken care of before anyone even checked in, which seems to show that the management was not ready to open but did anyway. Customer service was not extraordinary in any way as we dealt with these random issues, and most seemed indifferent. Unfortunately this will be our last visit to the Grand.

We had our bags taken up to our room from Mackinac City, only to find that they were left outside our room all day and the suit bag was thrown on the floor! The next day while we were having breakfast (We had our suitcases sent back to the mainland w hours prior to departure), we returned to our room to find they removed all of our carry-on/souvenirs and had already cleaned up the room for the next people! It was 9:00 a.m. and we had not even checked out yet! We still had our keys! Apparently they stored all of our belongings someplace, because they returned it all without me having to tell them what was taken out! Sounds to me like staff are not communicating with each other. For the amount that we paid for the exclusivity of the resort, I was very disappointed. That would never happen at even a mediocre hotel, which was surprising.

I have been in the hotel industry for over 30 years. The Grand is an iconic hotel and I have always wanted to visit and MY it did not disappoint! First of all to maintain standards and style while respecting all the COVID protocols is a very difficult balance. The staff of The Grand did it with aplomb!
We flew from Chicago to Traverse City (very easy and very quick).
The baggage transfer from the Shepler's ferry is totally handled by the hotel. One just unloads the bags from the car, it is tagged and the next time you see it, it is in your room at The Grand.
Upon arrival we chose to take the upgrade to a lake view room and would definitely book that room type again. We had a double queen, the room was nice and large (of course as it is a historic hotel the rooms are not always uniform in size). Our bathroom was dated, but very clean. I would have only wished for some type of cabinet for our toiletries. (I understand all the bathrooms are being redone this winter).
The Carlton Varney decor is very distinctive. I had been to the Greenbrier before so was familiar with it and think it is perfect for this type of hotel.
The service in the main dining room was excellent. The menu suggestions were varied and the portions were well sized. The staff was superb. Each staff member has his/her name as well as the number of years they have worked at The Grand on their name tags. Even with face masks on, you could see their eyes were smiling and it made a difference.
The hotel has other restaurants it operates as well. We had wanted to try The Woods (a Bavarian style restaurant). Unfortunately I did not know to make the reservation well in advance and we were there over the weekend so could not get a reservation (a great excuse to come back).
We also visited Traverse City and Petoskey. Next time, it will be just The Grand!
Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel. A beautifully preserved historic hotel surrounded by immaculately-attended flowers and trees. The expansive wooden front porch adorned by fresh geraniums is impressive.
The staff was friendly and helpful, despite being woefully short on personel due to the pandemic. This was most evident during dinner service; however, the delicious dinner and attentive staff made up for the longer than normal wait.
Would not recommend staying in the Studio Suites on the first floor because they are located directly above the ballroom. This proved to be a little noisy, but thankfully the evening dance band performance ended promptly at 11pm.
All in all, we had a pleasant stay.

It was a pleasure to welcome you during your recent stay at Grand Hotel, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your insightful comments. It's wonderful to hear that you appreciated our beautiful front porch and enjoyed the fresh flowers. It's also great to know that you received attentive and hospitable service from our team. Thank you for your patience if we were slightly short of waist staff during dinner service, however, we're happy that this did not detract from your having a positive evening. Thanks again, and we hope to have the opportunity to host you the next time you're visiting the area.

The staff and level of service* were exemplary. The food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent. However, the room and amenities were “meh”. I’ve stayed in 4 & 5 star hotels on four continents and come to expect things like bath robes and such. Flat screen TV, in-room refrigerator and safe, and free WiFi are things included at a $150/night Holiday Inn (along with included breakfast). The room was rather small and the bathroom was unremarkable.
This was a “once in a lifetime” experience for my wife and me, and we realized beforehand that we were paying for the bragging rights of having stayed at “The” Grand Hotel. It was by far the most expensive hotel we’ve ever stayed in and I suppose the class of people who stay here on a regular basis don’t place a premium on value.
The package pricing and billing procedure were confusing at best. The ‘discount” for ferry service amounted to paying the same price at the dock as everyone can get if ordering online. It’s $2/per...Why bother advertising it at all? When we checked out, I saw nothing on the bill telling me what my credits paid for. For example, we were supposed to get free entrance to the Manoogian Art Museum. Maybe we did; maybe we didn’t. The person at the museum was unclear and I was unable to detect if it was charged to our bill. I’ll eventually do the math to figure it out.
Although not of great importance, but worth mentioning, the coffee at breakfast was thoroughly underwhelming. I’ve has better coffee at any number of cheaper hotels and even at McDonnell’s
If our friends (none of whom are in the 2%) ask about a recommendation, we’ll tell them, “yeah, you should do it once for a night or two.”
*. The service we received was great, but limited. Using COVID19 as an excuse to forego maid service was disingenuous. Saying “sorry about that” for a $600+/night room doesn’t cut it.

This hotel is one of a kind, maybe a dying breed that looks like it missed becoming obsolete from the days of the Great Gatsby. The hotel itself is more of an experience than most hotels.
You will dress for dinner - and they mean it. Jacket and tie, dresses for the ladies, no wife beater shirt with a ball cap here. That is its charm - it is an island on an island for those who truly appreciate the lost days of living well, dressing appropriately and being surrounded by people who put manners before money.
Is it expensive?
Very. Expect to spend pretty much $2,000 a day to stay there, eat, have drinks, do some of the activities. And that's for 2 people.
The rooms are small but comfortable. The little things are perfect: chairs throughout the lobby are not worn, perfectly upholstered. The beds are comfortable and the baths pretty modern.
The service is outstanding and they do not allow tipping. The porch one sees in the photos is even more impressive in person. Somehow the place was never crowded - and we were there in July 2021. Every room was filled but there were pretty much no lines anywhere.
Getting to and from are a little challenging as the first ferry in the morning departed at 8:00 AM so flight plans were a struggle.
If you plan this trip well in advance, line up your transportation and you can afford the very high price you are going to love the trip.
If you are trying to save a few bucks by working third party web sites, taking your groceries to the room, well, this place may not be for you.
