My family has been going to Waskesiu since my grandfather was a small child. The owner/manager of Armstrong Hillcrest is awful to deal with. She is condescending and degrading when you ask simple questions. The pet policy depends on her mood and if she knows your family. The cabins are not well looked after and look like they belong in the movie The Shining. I do NOT recommend staying here. My family and I will not be going back.

There is no website posted on the TA review page. So I did a Google search and found a website for Armstrong Hillcrest Cabins (located on a Waskesiu website under accomodations) I needed to do some research before booking. I also had email contact for some of my questions. The responses were very helpful. At first I considered getting a cabin for five nights and read the info on the website about the cabins, location, cost, amenities, plus had a look at the photos. I wanted something for two people with two beds. The web page was informative and provided answers to many of my questions. I discovered that there are several different types of cabins ranging from $240 per day to $99 per day. Many types had two bedrooms; Type C (single room) had flush toilet, cold water only, use public showers; Type D (single room) required use of public washrooms. The cabins are conveniently located at the west end of Waskesiu Drive and also along Willow Street. It is walking distance to the beach, shops, museums and dining. After more research I discovered there is also a motel section (Hillcrest Motel) near the cabins with various types of accomodations also. Email contact with the office resulted in a booking of a two bedroom unit in the motel (with kitchenette). The Type B unit we were in was on the main level with a deck overlooking Waskesiu Drive. We were happy with our unit and would consider booking it again the next time we visit Waskesiu and PANP.

The moment I stepped into the cabin I rented for $99.00 per night, my jaw really hit the floor. The stench was overwhelming, but that aside, the interior was thrown together with what seemed leftover crap from a garage sale from the 1970 ties. Even the contents of the cupboard looked poor. This cabin, # 41, need some very serious renovations The curtains were white and see-through, so no privacy. Thank goodness I brought sheets from home to protect my decency..I spoke with the management about this and she said that it only $99 per night, and it was only for a couple of days. So my money didn't matter. As long as they had theirs. They also neglected to tell me that the bathroom is located in another building. I confronted the management and I was met with condescension and disbelief. You could not do your dishes there, so you had to haul a bucket of water to the cabin. HAHAHA. I checked out the facilities and it was worse than the cabin. 5 different kind of fake wood on the walls, gross shower stalls and 3 to 5 different kind of colors of paint. What a poor looking mess.Just a ridiculous and appalling space to clean yourself. Thank goodness I had an acquaintance there with a cabin and I ate and showered there, I only had to sleep in the shed as I called it. A spider bit my foot and that was the limit for me. Please don't ever book in this gross hotel. they don't deserve their 2 stars and they seriously need to renovate and respect their clients. And if the owner/ manager reads this: shame on you!!!!!!! I would very much like to have my money back that I worked so very hard for.

I always stay at Hillcrest and enjoy my stays there. It's pet friendly and there are a variety of levels to meet travellers' needs. Cabins range from rustic to more luxurious and there is a lodge as well. Be sure that you know exactly what you are getting before you book as there are A and B type cabins that have different amenities and you don't want to end up with a shower in your bedroom!

Armstrong Cabins are about the most reasonably priced accommodations going in Waskesiu. The facilities were adequate for a family of three, and priced about 160 per night. I don't recommend one of the smaller cabins since you have to share showers and the cabins are all quite old and need some serious updating. Note that in many of the cabins there is no wifi and TV is limited to a 10 channel package (which is ok, since it is a national park. Get outside!!). For families you are steps away from the lake, the beach and the parks canada nature centre. Restaurants in Waskesiu were way overpriced...but typical of a resort town like this.....local tip: go to the Waskesiu Marina where they sell locally caught fillets of pike, walleye and lake trout and they make a great local dinner using the cooking implements found in the cabins. Overall---Waskesiu is an amazing park...these cabins aren't paradise by far, but they'll serve your purposes and not break the bank in this pricy summer resort town.
