Husband and I stayed in a cabin, for 9 nights and loved it! Previously named Izaak Walton Inn and now is named LOGE of Glacier, pronouced lodge. Cabins and most train lodging cars are across the train tracks from main lodge, you get a secluded feel. It is a bit pricey but we did enjoy it. We ate in lodge restaurant the first night and it was great. We had a kitchenette in the cabin, which was nice to whip up a quick breakfast before heading out for the day. Cabin was comfortable for husband and I, good shower and bed. It sleeps 6 but we did not use the loft rooms. The fire pit and picnic table with the cabin was wonderful. Finding the turn to cabins when we first arrived was a bit tricky, it is not marked. They said if we put in Caboose Ln in GPS it would find it, but that failed for us, we did find it and then just made a mental note of what was around that turn. The road coming into the cabin area is about mile long, after you have driven on main rd (Hwy 2) for just a bit, gravel road which I am assuming is not maintained by the lodge but another entity, Flathead National forest is located right there from cabin area, but this road is a rough so you have to take it easy coming in and out. Take it slow and look for wildlife. We would leave for the day of adventuring in the area & Glacier Nat Park and not return till the end of the day. It is a bit of a drive to either entrance of Glacier but that did not bother us, it's a pretty drive and expected long drives to go anywhere in the area. Hwy 2 is what you run to get around and the speed limit is 70 so that helps. Right down the road is the Goat Lick of Glacier. We enjoyed going to the river accesses that were close to the lodge. This location has been closed for 2 years and has just reopened in Sept 2024, so the few hiccups we ran into is understandable. They are doing several improvements and some are still in progress, so patience is needed. We spoke to the activities personel and he showed us the bikes and other equipment they have to rent, looked wonderful!! I really would of liked to see more pictures of inside of lodging options on website but I am sure that is to come. The staff is wonderful! I was concerned with train sounds and that did not bother us a bit. We did bring a small oscillating fan for white noise, which we use at home, but I think we would of been fine without it. We would recommend these accomendations and hope we can return!!

The remodel of this historic inn has maintained as much as the rich history I remember from my past visits as possible, while adding modern amenities. The location is of course entirely unique. The staff are beyond friendly and helpful, they made us feel like part of the crew. Don’t expect a traditional hotel experience here; but if that’s what you expect, you probably aren’t attracted to this location anyway. Or shouldn’t be. Come to have fun in the wilderness, enjoy the company of your friends, and soak in the funky, small-inn experience. The grab and go breakfast foods are delicious, and just what you need to fuel your adventure for the day. The dinners in the restaurant are first-class, and the bar has fun for adults and families with young children as well.

First, we knew to expect no cell service and WiFi bc of the website. You can sit in the lobby for better WiFi but don’t expect it to be able to download anything ☺️ you will lose service as soon as you get into the mountain pass on 2 so make sure you have any messages out or anything downloaded before then! Second, our room was so cute. We had the family suite and our family of 5 was very comfortable there! It had 2 queens, a twin, and a futon twin. The other rooms are fairly small in the style of older hotels from this era. The bathroom was a more modern addition though with nice water pressure and temperature. We were a bit unfamiliar with using the boiler / radiator but figured it out eventually. My only downside is there was no microwave in the room or access to ice/mini fridge. Which I totally know these things are not a given in hotels like this. Buttttt the restaurant (while delicious) gets expensive for a family! Families can expect at least $50-60 a meal even breakfast. and there’s not anything else close by.
That said the food in the restaurant was good. We had dinner twice and breakfast once. They catered a meal for the family wedding we were at too.

Overall - Excellent renovation job of a beloved historic inn!
Rooms—For the most part, they are tasteful and thoughtfully done. Very comfortable new beds, nice new bathrooms. Really liked using the electric boot warmer and the wall-mounted ski hooks. Loved the branded enamel cups, that was a very nice touch. But there are only four hooks to hang up all your gear and clothes, and literally two hangers (??!). Also, the heating is very loud if you aren't used to it.
Lobby—Comfortable, but the placement of a large-screen TV above a non-working fireplace was a total vibe killer and felt very out of place with LOGE's whole "Live outside, go explore" ethos. Please get your fireplace working and keep the TVs in the basement bar & game room!
Restaurant—It is of good quality but lacks decent vegetarian options. Also, it has a very sad and small wine list, while the beer list goes on for days. Thought the food was a tad expensive for what it was (e.g. $14 for fried brussel sprouts) but makes sense given the remote location.
Gear—Awesome to have so much gear available to rent but it's gotta be in good working condition! We were given xc skis that hadn't been properly waxed, so we were forced to return to the lodge and wait for 45 minutes for the staff to fix them. (This is like being given a rental car with flat tires.) We were given no apology, no discount, not even a free cup of hot cocoa while we waited. And we lost significant and valuable skiing time on our one full day at the lodge.
Tech—Every tech touchpoint (booking confirmation, advance registration form, key code for our room) failed. Also, this is the mountain wilderness of NW Montana not Seattle! In a place with no cell service, why rely so heavily on apps and texting? That makes zero sense.

Our stay at the Izaak Walton Inn was amazing. From our incredible and cozy caboose, the delicious food for dinner and the overall ambiance was fantastic. Cristinna was extremely helpful and detail-oriented when it came to finding the best lodging options for me and my family. The Izaak Walton Inn is such a historic beautiful venue that is so well preserved, clean and makes you feel right at home. The Izaak Walton Inn staff is the cherry on top.

We arrived at the hotel in the evening, while having our dinner we sat outside and watching the train come, the receptionist came to us and said wave at them and they will wave us back and YES ofc we excited to do so. The hotel is very warm and welcome, I read a note n toilet and I was so impressed, I went to play billiard 3 times, My Singaporean friend played piano with my favourite instrument (Canon) and we all enjoyed them so much. It's just a 3 nights there but it was memorable, I wish I had another time to go back, but of course with these friends again. Thank you so much Izaak Walton.

We stayed in the red caboose cabin on the opposite side of the tracks from the main lodge and enjoyed it. Nice and quiet on that side and that cupola is awesome for train watching. Nice place to stay when visiting Glacier as both entrances are about 30 minutes away. The staff as usual was friendly. Only negative is the supply chain problems that the inn is experiencing. We had to ask for soap and dish detergent and the staff had trouble finding any. Normally there's shampoo and lotion and none of that either. Considering the location we cut them some slack but I hope that they can improve their inventory.

Great little place for XC skiing/ snowshoeing. If you come by train that's what you'll do!. It's lovely though. The Inn is re-done nicely and the staff were friendly. Power was out in Essex but they have a generator that kept everything going for 3 days- x limited menu, no sauna/ hot tub. Bring some of your own food. If weather will be bad and you arrive by train be sure you are dressed and ready to walk as you step off the train!- No shelter/ wifi at the platform.

We stayed a couple of nights in the X215 caboose which is our lodging of choice in the winter. As per usual we had the whole area to ourselves as the adjacent buildings were not occupied. Very quiet and peaceful. The X215 was cozy and comfortable especially with having a fireplace in the bedroom. It hit -2 one morning and the caboose stayed comfortable. Staff seemed short but these days every place is having problems hiring. All personnel who we dealt with were very friendly and helpful. They do a super job of grooming trails for cross country and we did use the upper Essex road on the opposite side of the tracks. Amtrak passes by twice a day and we enjoy seeing the train. Meals were excellent and I'll review under Dining Car restaurant.

We staid in the red caboose and it was absolutely amazing. The bed was so comfortable with good quality bedding and mattress. The water pressure in the shower was very strong with very hot water to make the shower after a long hike perfect! The kitchenette was furnished with everything imaginable to prepare meals including a high quality Chicago cutlery knife set. The gas BBQ grill on the deck was especially convenient to prepare quick meals.
The restaurant was very clean and the food was outstanding.. covid precautions were followed with everyone wearing a mask and social distancing.
All staff were very accommodating and friendly
The grounds were very well maintained and there are a wide variety of trails to hike with varying levels of difficulty.
Overall it is a place you must stay for really any time of year!

A lot depends on when you are planning to visit. We were there in January when the park was closed.
Ask the lodge how you can get a rental car from Essex.
There was a private outfitter who could be paid to take us out for the day and also to see a few locations on the edge of the park. It is an expensive option and more for the outdoor active hiker.
The Red Jammer is an excellent touring option if you can figure out a way to get to its starting point.
We toured on the similar yellow buses in Yellowstone and it was so informative and less stressful to be taking photos inside of driving.
We made our reservations for Yellowstone tour bus months in advance, they fill up.
"Lots of parking. Loved sitting at the outside dining area and watching the trains.. Great little gift shop and downstairs bar. Met some interesting people down there. "
There are more places to choose from in the Essex area.
