If we had paid 60, or 70, or even 80 bucks, this place might have been worth it. The current owners are putting some money into the Clown Motel, and it might be eventually worth what we paid. Not now. Okay room (although strangely, other than the picture on the door, there were no clowns!) . Large room, full size (old) refrigerator, microwave, nice TV (although the channel selection was confusing, there was no guide in the room, and no phone to call the front desk). Wifi worked. Noisy upstairs neighbor (not the Motels fault). Parking lot is chewed up and hard to navigate if your on a walker, as I am. On the plus side, the toilet was relatively easy to get on and off, and the bathtub was easy to get in and out of. I've driven through Tonopah many times and was always curious. Now I've had the experience. I think once was enough. Shout out to Christopher at the front desk. He was very nice at check-in and recommended a very nice place to eat.

This place is much more interesting than many reviews give it credit for. In addition, we found the guests to be a mix of young and eclectic people just having a good time. When you go in the front lobby you will find an unimaginable array of tourist trinkets and authentic valuable donated clowns from all over the country. The owner bought it two and a half years ago and is making steady renovations. Unfortunately, when we were there, it distracted from the outside ambiance.

You may have seen a lot of pictures of the cemetery next door. The photos don’t really do justice to the heartbreak of the old west and the human costs associated with the mining in this town. When you view the cemetery in person you will actually be taken back a bit about how sad it is. There is all kinds of trashy stuff around it.

The motel itself really is a lot of photographic fun. I don’t mean to over-sell it, but it was really a lot of fun for our brief visit. We ended up spending more time there than we expected. Don’t miss it!

The room is spacious, clean, and has a comfortable bed and seating. Nice having a refrigerator and microwave. The staff, Christopher, is very nice. My only suggestion would be to pave the parking lot. I think a newly paved parking lot would do a lot to draw in customers. The Clown Motel is close to Tonopah dining establishments too.

We called the day before our overnight stay to make a reservation for a ground floor Clown "Suite," which turned out to be a spacious room with a private bathroom as well as a full size fridge, TV, microwave, and coffee maker. All this could be perfectly acceptable, in fact potentially delightful, for USD 100 per night, but ....

When we called, the owner didn't tell us we would be spending the night in the middle of a construction site.

While the room was mostly clean, there were parts of the interior that were seriously dilapidated and in dire need of repair. It was certainly not "newly renovated" as the motel website claims at the time of this writing.

Coffee cups and stirrers were not wrapped or sealed; thus, we did not use them since it wasn't clear what previous guests might have used them for. This is of particular concern during a pandemic.

The bed sheet was filthy with a dark stain right in the middle of it. Yikes!

We would definitely not stay there again.

This was a very good experience, We drove 8 hours from California to stayed a night at Clown Motel, as we arrived this guy open the door he was very nice and friendly, he even gave us some rock stones, then while my daughter was checking in and having conversation with owner of the motel who was very friendly. I was enjoying the big clown collection in there, at night we walk to the cemetery which is next to the hotel, The rooms were clean and comfortable, affordable rates. We will be back.

Okay so going in we knew this wasn’t a four or even three star place but we were going for the experience. So here’s my suggestion.. visit because it’s cool just don’t stay because that isn’t. Very run down, noisy (don’t stay on the first floor). Both nights we were woke up around 5-6 am by people walking back and forth in the room above us. As far as themed motels go I have been to so much better… IT room wasn’t anything special at all, basic clown room was even worse.. people live there too… like I said, stop by, take pics but don’t stay unless you are okay with less than motel 6 standards and I am not!

If I were you I would avoid this hotel at all costs. Prior to a little over a month ago or so, I had stayed here five years prior. Back then I felt it was very nice, the staff was down to earth, and my stay was a pleasant one. I wish I could say the same. Although I did like the new owner, what I did not like were the other employees present at the time. One of them was doing nothing but spitting out profanity after every sentence. Another one decided to be very inconsiderate. As I was checking out, I was minding my own business as I was approaching my vehicle to put my things in. Then, out of nowhere, this rude female employee mistakes my personal property as trash and keeps crossing my path insisting she has her way to make me throw away my collectable figures and, most importantly, my Christmas present. However, that's not the worst part. When I told her that it wasn't garbage, she started cracking out sarcastic remarks and then laughing. Not only that; but she even made an offensive remark at my T-shirt which was to commemorate a concert which occurred 50 years prior. As a result, I NEVER want to wear it again b/c I was very offended. Not only that, but the room I was in was pretty dirty for what it was. Furthermore, the bathtub water faucet knob was broken, and the floors were pretty dusty. All the negative previous negative reviews left by other users tell the truth. The kind of guests this establishment attracts is enough to ruin a stay. I am NEVER coming back here!

I would suggest NEVER visiting the Clown Motel. I watch a YouTuber by the name Omar who paid to film at this motel. Upon his visit he was greeted by a man named Chris (I belive) who gave him access to rooms and gave him a short tour of different areas of the motel. While filming in a room, the OWNER of the hotel was outside screaming and cussing up a storm because they were there filming for the night despite having been told they were allowed to and having paid for their stay. They went to confront the owner after being told they had to leave and they explained to the owner “We were told we could stay here, we can bring you business, do you not want business” where the owner straight up said “No” on camera. The owner of this business dont care about business and he clearly don’t care about his employees as he cussed out Chris and then went on to fire him. If this is the owner, I wouldn’t take any of my business to him. Dude is a total douchebag and deserves to lose any money he’s earned from that hotel. Also upon being kicked out, he wouldn’t refund Omar his money or even half of it that he’d paid for their overnight stay. Owner is pure trash, disrespectful and has no courtesy for staff or customers. As tempting as it may be to stay at this place, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I stayed at the Clown motel for 3 days in April 2021. I did not book in advance, and was happy to get a room. Mind that this was during the pandemic and the owner did not wear a mask whilst showing me the room and during the checkin procedure. However, I was glad to get a room and settled in. The room was ok, but the bathroom was atrocious. The handle for the shower valve came off, the bathtub was filthy and the shower curtain was disgusting. My room was not serviced for 2 days and after I complained, the owner seemed not interested, In summary, this motel is a dump and I do not recommend staying there.

I had reserved two nights, drove all of the way to Tonopah, and ended up leaving after one night and just eating the lost money on the second night. The room looked like it had been cleaned but was damaged all over, the bath tub was broken, had a fridge with multiple parts broken, scrape marks all over the walls, damage to the floor and ceiling. The property looked awful too—outdoor seating looked like it had been scored from a series of free piles, mismatched and damaged. There was junk all over the side of the property, a soda vending machine covered with duct tape and garbage bags, feral cats, garbage and the whole property just looked junky. They hadn’t even bothered to paint numbers on the room doors; they were written on in sharpie marker.

There is a sign to wear a mask when entering the lobby, which I did, but the owner and employee I did see were not masked at any time I saw them. The “museum” is a crappy collection of clowns and art, a lot of pictures not even hung up, just leaned against a wall and many of the clowns were not arranged in any interesting way. It takes up the space of about half the size of your average bedroom and you’ve seen everything within 5-10 minutes.

There’s basically nothing to do in Tonopah aside from the casino. The graveyard next to the motel hasn’t been well cared for. There was garbage along the fence, presumably from the Clown Motel. The couple of things I thought might take some time are a marketing mirage—not very cool and only take a few minutes. I went here to check out the hotel and relax and decided the first morning to just head back toward Reno instead. The scariest thing about this hotel wasn’t any haunting, just how dingy and gross the room and property were. Don’t waste your time or money.

Is this place actually haunted?
Answer from Charles D
Charlottesville, Virginia53 contributions79 helpful votes
I didn't get the impression the Clown Motel was haunted. Right next to it, however, is a very old cemetery which is 100+ years old. Among the individuals buried there are victims of the Tonopah-Belmont Mine fire which took place on February 23, 1911. It's different. Due to its age, that alone can make others uncomfortable. Furthermore, there are other things about the Clown Motel which would make me discourage ppl. from staying there, and the cemetery isn't one of them. The cemetery is definitely a must see if you're in Tonopah, NV. The hotel is very clown themed and it stays true to that. Moreover, what I did not like was the fact that the room I was staying in was pretty dirty, and a few of their staff members were very rude and/or discourteous. The owner was down to earth and a pleasure to talk to; but, the rest of the staff I had the displeasure of being around seriously needs etiquette training.

Is it worth the hour and a half drive to see the motel and cemetray from death valley?
Answer from Heidi Z
Laughlin, Nevada97 contributions103 helpful votes
If you want the cheesy hotel feeling, then yes. It depends on if that is something you would like to do. If you are just going for a day trip and not planning on staying at the hotel overnight, I wouldn't do it. If you want to spend the night, it's an okay thing to do. The cemetery is interesting, but not huge so it won't take a lot of time. Tonopah does not have a lot to do, so you have to figure out how badly you want to see it. Having been there once, it isn't something I need to do again, but I don't regret going. We drove up from Vegas which was a little further than Death Valley.

yes, its right inside the office where you check in. They have alot of interesting clowns to look at, and tee shirts, coffee mugs, and magnets. We were there in Jan. 2019.
