The original Rustic Log Cabins in Lisbon NH. Hand hewn log cabins by Real Goulet. Come relax and unplug by the Salmon Hole Brook, a 35 foot wide waterway that weaves through the property. Each log cabin is unique and individual and has its' own style. Wood burning fireplaces, full equipped kitchens and romance will await your visit. Open year round. The Rustic Log Cabins are nestled along the Salmon Hole Brook between 80 to 100 feet apart. Come to listen to the soothing brook and take a step back in time. Read that book you haven't had a chance to finish. We have a supply of books, games and cards in the office for your pleasure as well as lawn games. If you need to get connected there is free WIFI at the office. We are about 10 minutes from Franconia Notch State Park which supplies the visitor with hiking, biking, swimming, snowmobiling, and skiing. Wether it be a lake, stream, river or pond all within 10 minutes of the cabins, fishing is at its' best.
We were in Lisbon for a Wedding at Bishop's Farm, which was like a 5 minute drive down the road. So easy. We stayed in Cabin #3 (The biggest cabin) was awesome. As soon as I walked in the front door I immediately felt relaxed. The stone fireplace was very rustic looking and beautiful, which sat in a huge living room. There was a very comfy couch and a few comfy chairs. So comfy you can just curl up and read a book. Lots of cabinet and storage space in the kitchen and bedrooms. The upstairs had 2 bedrooms and 1 bedroom on the main floor (with its own full bathroom). Another full bathroom was between the living room and kitchen. My favorite was the back deck overlooking the brook. So content. If that deck was screened in it would of been nice to sleep outside on it! :) Nothing like the sound of running water and crickets to put you to sleep. The nights were great by the firepit, which was right by the brook. If you like to disconnect, this is definitely the place to go. We did not get a chance to do some hiking, but another visit is most certainly in our near future.
Thank you Erik and Jennifer for sharing your truly wonderful place. We are looking forward to a return visit.

The cabins were as advertised and very rustic. It was great sitting out by the brook and being lulled by the noise of the running water. If we weren't out exploring we were out by the brook or sitting by the fire inside. There were a couple of things we think people should know before going....1) the cabins are right on the side of a "numbered" roadway so cars do go flying by at 50+ miles an hour. 2) there seems to be a lot of rules, especially when leaving; you will out the towels and sheets in a bag, and fold the blanket and quilt to leave on the bed. Additionally you will take the caps off and clean recycling and put into proper buckets near the cottage. Trash needs to be taken to a dumpster near the office. Next the fireplace needs to be cleaned. Unfortunately they do not leave an appropriate bucket, brush or shovel in the cabin to do this. Near the recycling we found a 5 gallow bucket and a shovel an did the best we could. Now you are ready to lock up and bring the welcome bag with the key,any money you owe for pets or woodland carry it over to the office. We paid our entire balance with Venmo, hope it processes alright. In summary this is am unique property but not a discount property. Given the price charged I don't think guests should provide all the free labor to get out of there. There is a traditional "trolling" for tip envelope in the cabin, but who should be getting the tip?

Thank you for choosing to stay with us! Glad you both enjoyed and found some of the charm that these hand hewn cabins and the surroundings have to offer. I’d like to add to the comments you have written to give everyone who will read your review a better and balanced perspective. As for our location, the “numbered roadway” you noted is Rt. 117, aka Sugar Hill Rd. It is actually one of a small handful of official NEW HAMPSHIRE SCENIC BYWAYS. It is not a main thoroughfare as you inferred. A common misconception folks have that cabins and cottages here in the White Mountains Region are way off in the middle of nowhere. The reality is that all of them are near roads. You can cruise through Lincoln, Bethlehem, Woodstock or other nearby towns to witness this. In fact, several of these are on busier roads and closer to them than Rustic’s cabins are. We actually love our location. And many of our guests think the same (just check out our Facebook page as over 5700 Follows can’t be wrong ;). We are only one of two active lodging options on this eight-mile NH Scenic Byway. The next nearest building on this road is nearly 1 mile away and also happens to be another hand hewn log cabin built by Real Goulet, the same man who created Rustic Log Cabins. Just three miles up from the cabins on this same scenic byway is Sunset Hill, in the small village of Sugar Hill, where guests can take in both a sunrise (accented by Mts. Washington, Lafayette, Cannon and others) AND a sunset, all from the same vantage point. As for the “rules” you mention, they are not. The word “rules” never appears. They are requests and guidelines. Some are there to help familiarize our guests with amenities, location of firewood and other aspects. Others are safety guidelines. Some folks have never used real wood burning fireplaces. Other notices are in regard to pet safety and guests need to know about certain plants, fungi and other possible matters that can be harmful to them, as well as where our pet relief area is. As for the mentions about sheets, towels, quilts, trash, recycling, ashes and such. These are common requests that are in place at campsites, cottages and other cabins. The request regarding sheets and towels were recently enacted as part of our Covid pandemic procedures. By having guests placing them in the provided bags, it minimizes having virus and bacteria particles become airborne when the cabins are being cleaned by our very small staff. This helps protects them and, subsequently, the guests that follow. As for recycling, three different containers are provided at two convenient locations. We ask that guests sort the glass, plastics and aluminum/metal containers. Rinsing, sorting and placing of recycling in proper containers is, again, a common practice. As for trash, again this is a common request in many non-hotel/motel lodging places. Regarding ashes in fireplace, we admit this is uncommon. Why? It’s because we know of no other public lodging that has real WOOD burning fireplaces. Ash buckets and hand shovels are strategically located outside and nearby each cabin and NOT inside the cabins. Imagine knocking over an ash can inside a cabin. It has happened and you don’t want to be inside when it does. Regarding departure, you mention many aspects but unfortunately did not realize the convenience of each one. Just like our safe, quick and very easy self check-in, our check-out was designed to be the same. Every other lodging facility we know of requires you to either settle up your balance and other aspects before you even get the key. We do not. We want you to get to your cabin and begin to relax ASAP. We created very these CONVENIENT options for paying everything such as your balance, pet fees, wood and charcoal. You can leave cash in the cabin or pay via Venmo (which is the option you chose and we thank you!) Who else let’s you not worry about all this until check out? Figuring out all that upon check-in and paying up could take up to 20 minutes. Our self check-in takes 1-2 minutes. Go to office porch, grab your welcome bag and go to your cozy cabin. That’s it! Our self check-out takes maybe 2-3 minutes. Tell us if you want balance of your stay on your credit card (we’ll take it from there), or pay the balance and other items via cash or Venmo. We are very confident that it took less time than checking out at all other places you have stayed. Much, much less. Next, many guests do not realize the effort and time that our housekeeping staff puts into preparing each cabin for our guests. The enhanced Covid cleaning procedures have added nearly 60 minutes to the “normal” process. We do not rush through the preparation. And all those tasks you mention that we ask our guests to do help us SAFELY get your cabin ready by - or sometimes before - the published check-in time. Finally, a tip envelope is extremely common in just about every lodging facility. We are not “trolling” for them as you put it. In fact, it doesn’t say “tips” nor mention anything to allude to tipping. It simply says “We hope you enjoyed your stay”. Hopefully we helped everyone get a proper perspective about the special charm and goings on here at Rustic Log Cabins. We take our guests’ comments and suggestions seriously so our guests can start some serious relaxing by fire pit on the Salmon Hole Brook, or the fireplace inside the cabin, or exploring our 16 acres via our own private hiking trail, or discovering the many beautiful scenic sites nearby. Or maybe just do as little as possible or nothing at all but reeelaaax. Rest assured we work hard so you can do as much or as little as you wish.

I can’t say enough about this place. We chose Cabin #6 for our honeymoon 👰🤵weekend. We are on the backside of the property, so although we hear the traffic, we can’t see it. The cabin looks just like its pictures, no surprises. It is quiet, relaxing, and perfect. We very much enjoyed not having a T.V., the babbling brook…which was extra due to rain on our second day, the whirlpool tub was so relaxing after a long day of driving. We lived having “US” time to relax, read books and play board games (from home). We will definitely stay here again. Such a great spot.

I planned a weekend trip with my fiancé at Rustic log cabins to enjoy the white mountains and take another look at our wedding venue. We are planning to get married on site in October of next year and just LOVE the property. We have been staying at Rustic for years with my parents and brother and just love the place. All the cabins are gorgeous, it’s very quiet and peaceful there. You really feel one with your surroundings. The owner, Alana is the perfect host, always attentive and willing to help with anything you need. The on-site wood storage is perfect for starting a fire in your indoor fireplace or outside behind your cabin. You cannot go wrong with any of the cabins here they are very quant and the perfect getaway for you and your family, especially if your looking for some quality time together. The brook offers a nice cool breeze and gorgeous views, and there is a walking bridge that connects to the cabins on the other side of the brook. Overall it is an amazing place to stay and I cannot wait to have my wedding there next fall. Alana you are amazing and thank you so much for everything you do to keep your guests happy.

I have been going to rustic log Cabins for years and absolutely love all the new changes ! The staff there is so helpful and attentive . I love to have a fire in our own fire place and getting more fire wood to burn really completes our romantic getaways . The owner Alana is always s available and returns my calls promptly to answer any questions I have . The changes that I noticed while my husband and I were there last week was AMAZING . Lots of flowers and little fairy gardens so cute . I think my favorite is the babbling brook and walking bridge , it’s lit up at night , making it super sweet ! Thank you Alana and rustic staff for a wonderful get away !

Liked · Sorry but nothing good to say. Fabricated description about this place.
Disliked · Our 25th Anniversary was ruined here. If not for over $500 for 2 days we would have left. 95 degrees and has no A/C. Cabin was extremely hot, SWEATING constantly. Ceiling fan and that's it. Called day before we came to ask about ac, got a bunch of bull that it is cool in the cabin. Spent most time in our Air Conditioned truck! No coffee for coffee pot. Dark in cabin, few lights. Bed and pillows uncomfortable! Chopping wood by our cabin all day. Big pile of wood right by our cabin door, had to walk around it. The charge for wood, expensive. Our vehicle was damaged with a nice scratch from people on the property. We stay in the mountains often and NEVER had the most unpleasant time like here!!!!!

Response from Alana Lessard, Owner at Rustic Log Cabins
Responded Jul 21, 2021
TO ALL OF THE FOLKS THAT WILL READ THIS REVIEW: PLEASE READ THE RESPONSE. THE LEVEL OF FALSE AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS MADE BY THESE GUESTS ARE BEYOND ANY OTHER MISLEADING REVIEWS. It may even appear twice under different usernames “Madguest2” and “Upset”. It was also on another site but no longer there. I apologize in advance for its length but this review requires a response like no other and may be considered LIBEL. Rustic Log Cabins Response: 1) “Sorry but nothing good to say. Fabricated description …” FALSE. Though it will become apparent that these guests had nothing good to say, the 2nd sentence is very disparaging and without merit. In hindsight, it seems there was a predisposed opinion that were no good things about Rustic prior to arrival. In some cases, any good things will not be appreciated. There are many good things to enjoy at Rustic such as the Salmon Hole Brook, wood burning fireplaces and fire pits, and real hand hewn log cabins. We value our guest feedback and opinions, always wanting to make Rustic the best. 2) Our 25th Anniversary was ruined here.” FALSE. As you read this response, you will determine that no one on the Rustic staff or myself did anything to ruin this stay. If they just once came to us for help, we would certainly helped them. 3) “95 degrees and has no A/C.” - FALSE, LACKS PERSPECTIVE/CONTEXT. For stay dates 6/28-29/21, it reached 91* FOR 1 HOUR in the afternoon. Remainder of day was 60s-80s per weather.com. Some apps will state it represents Lisbon (if that was the guest’s selection) but actual sensors - in our case - are often in lower elevations and at locations such as airports. Humidity was comfortable, 50-70s% afternoon and evening. Guests were informed of no A/C PRIOR to 6/28. See below for more detail on this. FURTHERMORE Rustic is in a higher elevation, closer to Sugar Hill (1/2 mile) than downtown Lisbon (5 miles). Rustic has moving water passing each cabin. Cabins and the property have considerable shade. With those factors, it is 4*-7* cooler than what is displayed. Add fans, it can be 10* cooler. As for no A/C, we accurately portray this by not listing it as an amenity. We do not mislead anyone on this topic or any other. 90* temps are rare, historically maybe 5-10 days during summer. Check the July forecast for yourself. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I had a conversation PRIOR to their arrival. Guests knew there was no A/C and that there were fans in every cabin. His response was unusual and in a quite dramatic manner, saying he was * “going to die.”. After telling him there was a ceiling fan, he said he would bring a fan and would be fine. I would have been happy to provide another fan if requested. Guests need to tell us if there are any concerns. We cannot address what we do not know about. They did not inform my staff or me about this matter or any other. 4) “Cabin was extremely hot / Ceiling fan and that’s it.” MISLEADING, SUBJECTIVE, LACKS CONTEXT. I’ll refer everyone to topic #3 above to provide proper perspective. As disparaging as this review is, I will be considerate as I know a few of us are more sensitive to heat than others. That being said, there were no complaints about temperature during their stay. If we only had heard from these guests, my staff and I would do our best to help to them. 5) “No coffee for coffee pot.” TRUE. Though many hotels provide this, we have experienced that folks are pretty particular about the coffee they prefer. Furthermore, this and other convenience amenities add considerable costs to rates. We choose to not provide coffee for these reasons. We do provide filters. 6) “Dark in cabin, few lights.” MISLEADING, OVERLY SUBJECTIVE, LACKS CONTEXT. This cabin is a 20x20 studio layout. There are 7 light sources in the main area and a dual fixture w/2-60 watt bulbs in the bathroom. In all, there’s at least 440 watts of evenly distributed light in this cabin. 7) “Bed and pillows uncomfortable.” MISLEADING & SUBJECTIVE. Like coffee, people have a wide range of opinions on mattresses and pillows. We respect those opinions. Reviews that state guests did not like the bed are infrequent, and there are many that feel we have very comfortable beds and pillows. 8) “Chopping wood by our cabin all day.” - FALSE. The time reporting for the staff member that was splitting wood is 2.5 hours, with 0.5 hours used to prep and clean up, which is practically noiseless. If they would have talked with my staff, we could have certainly worked with them and waited until these guests left to go sightseeing or shopping. 9) “Big pile of wood right by our door, had to walk around it.” FALSE & MISLEADING. The pile of wood was logically placed in front of the woodshed. The pile was over 30 feet from the cabin door. This is yet another false statement that helps to delegitimize the entire review. 9A) As for having to walk around it, a mere 3’ diversion from actual path. The diverted path was 4+’ wide, lit and clear. These guests did not care or understand that wood deliveries are vital to offering this highly appreciated and hard to find feature of wood fires. Wood burning fireplaces are one of the top 5 features that attract folks to the cabins, along with each cabin being on the Salmon Hole Brook, fire pits along the brook, and the only hand-hewn cabins we know of in the region that are publicly available. Touching on another statement regarding firewood, it is competitively priced and very convenient. Nearby and 24x7 access. We do not make money on wood. Buying it, labor costs to split, stack, deliver, bundle, clean fireplaces/pits plus the extra insurance for the fireplaces are expensive. 10) “Our vehicle was damaged with a nice scratch from people on the property.” FALSE & MISLEADING. I cannot confirm or deny these guests had any such damage to his vehicle, but I can state this: This topic is unlike any other in this review. Even if a guest chooses not to contact a staff member or owner during their stay about a condition or need (which these guests chose not to do at all), I do know that a reasonable person (such as many of you who have taken valuable time to read this response) would be upset and notify me or someone on my staff if it occurred on premise. That these guests decided not to bring this to our attention during the stay is yet another segment that portrays how inaccurate, false, misleading and unjustifiably subjective this review is. If you made it this far, thank you so much! If you haven’t stayed with us before, please come see what so many others enjoy, see, feel, and come back for, again & again. Make some magical moments and memories. Thank you!

I hate writing bad reviews, but this place deserves it. My (now) fiance made the reservations at this place, doing all the necessary research, even calling them and having them take extra pictures and asking them questions - he proposed to me on this vacation, so he wanted it to be perfect, and they assured him it would be.
So.. we check in for 6 nights, and they show us to our cabin. So far, so good, it looks cute on the outside. We notice upon entering the cabin that the bathroom / bedroom are not separated by a complete wall, just a partition, so you can hear everything that the other person does while in the bathroom. Umm... ok, no biggie. Then, we notice that it's freezing cold in there, but there's a fireplace and we figure the heater in the corner will also come on.
So - we light the fire, it gets warmer, but the heater is broken and never comes on. Not only that, but the flume is not working correctly (and yes, we know how to work a fireplace). So at 3am, freezing, on an incredibly uncomfortable lumpy bed with thin blankets, the heater not working, the fire alarm starts screeching from the smoke coming out of the fireplace. So we have to open all the doors, waving the smoke out -- three times throughout the night. Neither of us slept all night - granted, I'm a light sleeper, but my fiance is definitely not at all. This man can sleep through a tornado, and he didn't get a wink of sleep that night.
So the next morning we try to make the best of it and ask them to fix the heater and the flume (neither of which, in their opinion, are broken). After which the guy comes over, is rude, and tells us that's basically just the way it is. Another night - freezing (although with more blankets), on a really uncomfortable bed, with the smoke detector going off every 2 hours throughout the night.
At this point, we realize both of us are coughing a *lot* during the day. We realize the cabin is so full of smoke that both of us are actually having breathing problems during the day, in clean air, because of what we're sleeping in at night. Plus, all our clothes smell like we've been dancing around in a campfire.
Eventually, between the sleepless nights, uncomfortable bed, rock hard pillows, crazy fire alarm, smoky cabin, limited hot water in the shower (did I mention that part?), fact that you can hear your cabinmate's every activity in the bathroom, attitude of the owners, etc. we have to bail. It is just too bad - so we move to a Day's Inn (!) and consider ourselves in complete luxury, so happy, even though we forfeited about $250 by doing so, it was worth it, it was honestly that bad (My fiance has since learned to ** read the fine print about the 14 day no cancellation policy.** I don't wonder why they have that.) And in case you're wondering, no, we are not pampered city slickers. I like to backpack, I barrel race horses and love getting dirty, I don't mind sleeping on the ground. But these people are promising, oh, heat? And not delivering. The place is awful. Thank god my fiance and I have a sense of humour, and we ended up having a good time anyways!

I definitely should have checked here on Trip Advisor before booking the Rustic Log Cabins. These cabins are located right on the highway and not at all situated the way I had expected when viewing the creative photos and write up on their website. So when we pulled up we were already getting a bad feeling but we had booked cabin #7 which is located across a bridge back in the woods by the brook and we thought would be much more quiet and secluded. After we checked in at the front desk we were informed that on the Saturday of our 3 night stay there would be some construction being done on a new cabin that was being built next door to our cabin and that we should find something to do from 9:00 am until dark on that day as to not be inconvenienced by the noise and workers around our secluded cabin in the woods. Now the red flag has gone up and we reluctantly took a walk over our bridge to see what we were up against. Needless to say it was not good and it looked like a construction zone back there, I checked the view out of the windows of the cabin and saw construction materials on either side, out of the front window view I saw a brook and on the other side of the brook were the other cabins which were flanked by large firewood sheds, a large white RV and a noisy highway. We went back to the desk and informed the owner that we did not want to stay here during construction and that they should have informed us of this before we booked with them. She was extremely confrontational and told me that I was unreasonable in wanting to leave just because of the construction and that my deposit was non-refundable. She offered me a discount to stay but the money wasn't the issue, I just wanted out of there. After she insulted me for about 15 minutes she reluctantly gave me back my deposit. I would not recommend this place to anyone who is looking for peace and quiet out in the woods as the website depicts, it is nothing like that even without the construction.

Hello Tracy. We would like to apologize again to both of you for the construction of our new cabin "Fireside". The disappointing thing about all of this is you didn't give our establishment and cabin a chance. If you had stayed for more than 20 minutes, you would have realized and appreciated the facility and special qualities we offer. Two of the clients that stayed here that weekend came over and asked when the cabin would be ready to rent, so they could book it for a winter getaway for snowmobiling. We had another couple check in after you and inquire about Cabin 7. We said someone just cancelled because of the construction and we showed them, they moved back there, stayed 3 nights and loved it. The same weekend we have a couple celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary and one couple celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary both returning guests. "Love the quiet and romantic atmosphere". Once again we regret you were not satisfied with out rural establishment on a country scenic byway, road, in Lisbon.

My fiance and I stayed here recently (in cabin 5) and unfortunately the chimney in the fireplace was not venting the smoke properly. We asked the office about it just to make sure we hadn't forgotten to open the flue or something, and they said the chimney was just built that way and there was nothing they could do. We tried to make another fire and this time it set off the fire alarm and filled the cabin with smoke. We also had trouble sleeping because the cabin was about 20 feet from a busy road where big trucks would barrel down it all throughout the night. Definitely not peaceful. We were disappointed because we really wanted the rustic cabin experience but without a fire and with all the road noise we were unable to get that. For the money ($150 per night) we felt we were taken advantage of. We will not be staying here again.

Sorry you had an issue with the fireplace. All our fireplaces are in perfect working order. If you had an issue with the fireplace, you should have come over and we would have been happy to give you firestarter 101. We have assisted many other clients to help them get a fire started for the first time. We are located on a New Hampshire Scenic Byway which is a rural route with views of the lupine fields, Cannon Moutain, the Presidential Range and Mt. Washington. Please note review of a customer that stayed in Cabin 5 after you that had no problems with the fireplace or the road.
