Henry L. Thayer was a successful Littleton, New Hampshire merchant with a dream to build a hotel more modern in equipment and character that others of its kind. The dream started taking shape in 1843 when he purchased the lot just east of his store January 14, 1850 as opening day for "THAYER'S WHITE MOUNTAIN HOTEL." Success was soon established due in part to the coming of the railroads to Littleton in 1852. After all 164 year pass the Thayers inn still offer great rooms, food and service to all visitors.

This is a quaint hotel but you have to understand that you are staying in an old inn and be ready for all that accompanies that (paper thin walls, tight spaces, inadequate outlets, creaky floors, no elevator). It is located in a perfect spot in the middle of Littleton and offers parking in the back, and the shower pressure was remarkable (though it also gets the entire bathroom wet!). If you are looking for a novel experience beyond chains, this is the place for you.

stayed for 2 nights. not at all what we expected from the photos on line. it was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Having said that the rest was negative. We appreciated that this is an older property but older should not translate as shabby and desperately lacking good features. The room was dingy with furniture that looked like it came from a number of different house clearances. Breakfast was a joke with not a single healthy or wholesome offering. Staff were ok but certainly didn't go out of their way to be friendly or even very helpful. We travel extensively in Europe and the US and would not recommend this property to anyone.

I should have known it was not the place for us when my husband said that I should not take my shoes off in the room since the carpet was soo disgusting, and then when he opened the mold-ridden shower curtain, I was appalled and knew there was no way I was going to shower there. The room was dingy and disgusting and depressing- as soon as we put our luggage in the room we began our search for somewhere nice to spend a night on our vacation. I asked if we could get 50% of our money back and the girl refused. I was never so happy to leave a place than I was when we walked out the door for the last time. Also, reading the reviews after being there was an eye-opening experience! I really loved the fact that the fire alarms will go off if you don't close the bathroom door. Also, we were there on a Monday and there was virtually hardly any place to eat dinner- everything was closed. We left and I was never so happy! The owner was in Turkey so there was no one that was in charge for me to talk to, thus they get a bad TA review.

The Inn is located on the Main Street and we happen to get room 1 which is very noisy from the traffic. Climbing the stairs with luggage was a bit challenging. The room was ok. Shower and bathroom is super tiny and took a while to get hot water. The tv got a few grainy channels. The bed was comfy with a nice firm mattress. A few restaurants within walking distance.

Nice looking hotel, more like an old b&b. Clean and neat, but old and because it is grandfathered, no elevator but 4 stories tall. Very steep stairs and neat but many small rooms. Definitely not made for seniors who cannot carry their own bags or have balance issues. It is in an excellent location, if you are young or healthy a good place to visit for a couple of days. Would stay there again Just be aware before visiting or making a reservation.

Opened in 1850, this National Historic Register property's great bones are still showing in its 173rd year. The Thayer Inn is a 4 story Greek revival beauty with 33 rooms and located right on Main Street in the heart of Littleton. We loved the history of the inn and it's old world quirkiness. The spiral staircases, strong white columns, creaky/uneven floors as well as cool little balconies give it great character. The Thayer is not for that population that doesn't appreciate history, needs a key card, a mini bar and an overkill of amenities. Those people should stay at the Comfort Inn by the interstate. The guest register is a who's who of famous Presidents, politicians, actors, writers etc. Among them were presidents Ulysses Grant, Pierce, Nixon, Carter and George H W Bush, General McClellan, Horce Greely, actress Bette Ford, PT Barnum, and Henry Ford (who tried to buy the place). The most fascinating visitor might be Yamashita Tomoyuki, (the Tiger of Malaysa) who spent months here in 1940 on a spy mission for Japanese intelligence. There was a continental breakfast with a lot of juices, teas and coffees, cereals, yogurts, blueberry muffins and some excellent cinnamon coffee cakes. Plenty to get most people satisfied. Its location allows you to park your car and walk the entire town of shops, services, historic sites, and restaurants. Behind the Hotel is the Riverwalk with shops, the Schilling brewery and tasting room as well as a red covered bride that will take you across the Ammonoosuc River to a few more restaurants and brewery. Through it's history the Inn has had a restaurant downstairs but does not today. It is a shame the inn doesn't have a little historic taproom which would certainly have some unmatched atmosphere and charm. It was good to see the No Vacancy sign lit up both nights were stayed there.

This would be a 5 star review if the attitude of employees was better. Not a warm welcome or friendly vibe. Very old building with lots of history. Room we had was small with a view of the rooftop so you might want to ask what your room view is when you book. We didn't care - room and bathroom were clean. Bed was fabulous. Heads up they have nothing (ie: real glasses, cutlery other than spoons - plastic or otherwise, etc.) available if you need it. The restaurant is not part of the Inn. I was looking for a plastic knife and better glasses and was told to go across the street and buy it. Last heads up - don't book here if you have mobility issues or trouble carrying bags up spiral staircase. Bottom line - I would stay there again - location was great and bed was great.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your recent stay at Thayers Inn. We appreciate your feedback and are glad to hear that you enjoyed the location and the comfortable bed. We are sorry to hear that you did not receive a warm welcome and did not feel a friendly vibe from our employees. We take pride in our customer service and are disappointed that we fell short in your case. We will be sure to address this with our team to ensure that we improve in the future. Regarding the view from your room, we apologize if it did not meet your expectations. We do our best to accommodate guests' requests for specific room views, but we cannot always guarantee them due to our historic building's layout. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the lack of amenities in the room. We will look into ways to provide better options for guests who require them. We are also sorry to hear that our restaurant not being part of the inn was not clear during your stay. Lastly, we understand that our spiral staircase can be challenging for some guests, and we will make sure to communicate this information more clearly on our website and during the booking process. We appreciate your feedback and hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future.

The Thayer is a lovely old inn with lots of quirks and lots of charm. Our room was cold and we couldn’t get the space heater to work, so they quickly gave us another and we were toasty warm. The bed was very comfortable; shower worked well, etc. The included breakfast is very minimal but with the fabulous Littleton Diner right down the block, we didn’t care! Prices are quite low and it’s fun being in the middle of town.

Me, my daughter, and my grandson (oh, our pug also) thoroughly enjoyed this quirky, unique, and awesome old Inn! We had a great guy that checked us in, and met the Innkeeper who delighted in talking to my grandson about old coins. We were in a family suite on 2nd floor and we LOVED it...yes, the layout was different, but we loved the fact it had 3 different doors to enter/leave. As far as location, everything was steps from front door, and out back was a lovely river with covered bridge. We will be back again for sure!

Firstly, I have to say the first impression was a lasting one.. I was told over the phone that their hotel policy is to NOT rent to locals. Really?! Where is this posted ANYWHERE on the website? When I explained that I was going to be drinking in the same building (company Christmas party downstairs) he relented but I still felt pretty unwelcome. The s**t show continued the night of my stay when David (the Innkeeper) asked me to move my Jeep (in front of my coworkers) because he didn’t like my parking job, during a snow storm. Wow! One tire was barely touching the line.. I was pretty annoyed, and it seemed that he was trying to embarrass me on purpose. I woke up the following morning at around 2AM to loud talking and laughter, and struggled to fall back to sleep… then I woke up at around 6AM to the same thing to find that the noise was coming from the front desk. Then it was breakfast time.. David (the Innkeeper) walked through the breakfast area in his fleece PJs without saying a word (rude), a table a French guests also said that they were very tired and thought that he was rude (couldn’t even be bothered to say "Bonjour"). This was all around the worst hotel/motel experience of my life. I will not say anything about the "quirks" of the building as I am fully aware of how old it is, but the staff could afford to be A LOT nicer. Y’all can clap back all you want.. people need to know the truth about this place, I’ve held it in long enough.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for sharing your experience. We have recently had to implement an extra layer of vetting for any folks who come to stay with us from the immediate area. It is not an uncommon practice for hotels to require management approval before making a reservation for those who live in the immediate area. Our manager was happy to make your reservation once they spoke with you, but we apologize if we made you feel unwelcome. We have limited, first-come first-serve parking, so it is imperative that we are able to utilize all parking spots available. A restaurant employee brought your car to our attention because it was parked erratically and did not have a parking pass, which gives us the right to tow. We prefer not to have cars towed, so the innkeeper sought out the owner of the car. They attempted to have a private conversation with you, but you denied them and asked specifically to have the conversation in front of your associates. We apologize that your neighbors were being loud in the early morning. We enforce quiet hours from 10pm to 7:30 am., so a staff member would have been happy to ask the offenders to quiet down if you had informed them of the issue. Our front desk opens at 7am, so we do not have any staff members at the desk who could make noise before then. The innkeeper lives on property and they have regular use of the breakfast room, but they are not ‘on duty’ twenty four hours a day. It is unreasonable to expect the innkeeper to be available for customer service while they are off duty. We understand our inn is not a good fit for everyone. We wish you good luck in your future travels.
