Easy to use valet parking. Digital checkin was a breeze. Nice room for 2. However, one of the sheer curtains was ripped. Bed coverlet had shredded threads. The morning of checkout we couldn't get hot water from the sink - something was wrong with the faucet.
Otherwise we liked this place. Enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant, servers were excellent. Front desk staff friendly. We will stay there again.

It has been a few year since I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown, and it was everything I remember.

From the friendly greeting by the valet to the large, open, clean lobby, everything was as I remembered it. The front desk folks were friendly, fast and efficient. Rooms were extremely clean and well kept. The bathroom was large and spotless with everything you could possibly need.

The hotel has all the amenities you would expect. One of the most important to me as a business person traveling is free, fast internet with they had.

The bar was open late and the restaurant was first class.

Easy walking distance to everything in the historic, downtown district of Portsmouth makes this a great place to stay any time of the year. You are literally one block away from it all...

When looking for a place to stay in Portsmouth New Hampshire, check these folks out first and you will not be disappointed!

This is a perfect location for walking around downtown. Try to get a waterside room on either the 4th or 5th floor. There is a parking garage across the street that is $2 per hour and lots of on street parking for free overnight.

We stayed at this hotel for four days over the New Years holiday. This was a family celebration with grandkids. I was so disappointed in the way they offered breakfast. This property only offers one option for breakfast, a $15.95 buffet for adults and $7.95 for kids under 11 years old. Our breakfast cost was ridiculously expensive. It would have been nice to have a menu with breakfast options. Today we went down for breakfast (most in places were closed due to the holiday) and the Hilton breakfast had gone up $5 more per person because they were offering prime rib! Ridiculous! KIDS DON’T EAT PRIME RIB FOR BREAKFAST! We ended up paying $20 for each kid for pancakes! Why not charge extra for those who wanted prime rib, not to all of us who didn’t. The prime rib carver guy stood for over an hour and a half waiting for someone to request a slice of his prime rib.....no one did. This along with the over $250 per night room rate I was left feeling really ripped off. I won’t be back to this hotel for that reason.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience about your recent stay at our hotel. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and we are very sorry to hear you were disappointed with a lack of a free continental breakfast. Hilton Garden Inn hotels offer a full cooked to order hot breakfast at a cost specified by our property instead of a free limited continental breakfast that other brands may offer. If you would like for the cost of our cooked to order breakfast to be included with the room rate during future stays, please know that you can inquire about our Bed and Breakfast package. If there is anything else I can do for you at this time, please contact me at the phone number or email below. We hope you will consider staying with us again in the future. Our goal is to make your stay better and brighter.

I have a very bitter taste in my mouth for Hilton after staying at this property. I was going to the area for a funeral and 2 other family members were staying here so I had to as well. They received a rate that was decent for the location (which is all they have going for them) and even though I was a Hilton member, had AAA and government rate, I could not get it. I called the Hilton line and they called the hotel directly to see we hat they could do, their answer "nothing". So I booked through another travel site and got a slightly better rate, but still too much for time of year and area. Then a day before we are leaving I get an email from Hilton with a rate about what I asked for in the first place. I'm a tried and true traveler so I get the game, but this hotel was not accommodating at all. Plus they charge you $30/night for valet AND because I wasn't a high enough Hilton member, they charged me $12 for 4 bottles of water. I called to inquire about the charge and they basically told me it was my fault for not knowing my level was not afforded free water. I left a message for the General Manager and 2 days later have heard nothing back. Stay at the Holiday Inn about a mile away - it's much cheaper, has free parking, free breakfast made to order and even if you don't have the reward program they give you free water! Uber downtown and save yourself the Hilton hassle!

Thank you for reviewing your concerns regarding your recent stay with us here at the Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown. The dates of your stay the hotel was sold out, which will restrict which discounted rates are available for booking. The use of the Government Per Diem is for Active Federal Government employees only, on work orders or active duty. These same terms are mentioned during the booking process. I understand your frustration with the added parking fee of $30 per evening however this is the same amount all of the downtown properties charge, it is also stated at the time of booking. We all use the same valet service, this is not revenue that the hotel keeps. We partnered with the valet company to make it easier for our guests to have all of their charges in one place during their stay. We happily give away free waters all the time to every level of guest, the waters you drank had tags on them that clearly stated the terms of purchase. There are certainly less expensive options in the Portsmouth area, however you could also compare driving a Ferrari to a Toyota under the same principles of it being less expensive. We truly appreciate all of our guests, and it is unfortunate the quality of your stay was predicated on the costs you incurred and agreed to.

Air conditioner was off when we arrived. We turned it on and within a couple hours, the floor was soaked. The air conditioner was leaking. The whole room was mildewy and just wet in the air. We stayed three nights and it didn’t get fixed until the second day. When we returned to the room after it getting fixed along with the shower drain (wasn’t draining) the odor was absolutely terrible. We didn’t get a new room until the night before we left. I have a 1 and 5 year old and I, myself, have lung problems. We asked for our room to get cleaned and was told it only gets cleaned it we stay for 7+ days. On the app and even inside the room right in the mirror, it states we can ask for room cleaning and it will be done upon our request. This is one of the worse Hilton’s I have stayed at.

Here for a 2 night stay for 5k, Parade, tree lighting and Portsmouth fun. Valet was good but expensive and should be free. Check in didn’t make you feel special. The bartender was never there when you wanted something. Breakfast was good but should have been free. The best was after checking into the room, my wife turns on all the lights to check out the room. She finds that 4 bulbs are out and one of them is the one in the shower which is a safety hazard as it was dark in there. I go down to the front desk and maintenance gives me the bulbs as they can’t come in your room so I had to do it myself. No housekeeping cause of 2 nights stay. The dust was thick in the spots that they don’t get to on the regular. Room needed a good deep clean. Great location and close to downtown but will most likely not stay here again.

This is a centrally located hotel that is unfortunately overpriced and very understaffed. The problems began at check in - when we arrived we saw a guest heading to the elevator because their key wasn’t working and said they had the same problem earlier. We went to our room and had the same problem immediately and had to go downstairs for a replacement only to return with one key still not working. We also didn’t have any room service the two days we were there despite requesting trash pickup and a pickup of sheets three times. In fact, one time the employee came, took a look at everything from the doorway and said they would return for it later, and never did…

Oh, and they also surprise you with a $40/night parking charge. This was on top of paying 400 a night for a room that should have been 250 at best, with the quality of the bedding and smelly cheap fragranced detergent. Just stay at the Hilton waterfront location - you may need to drive downtown but the quality there is much better and it costs less (we will be going back to staying there…)

No towels in room, no room service available. We paid a high price for no service available. Valet parking only as no onsite parking is offered even with high price of rooms. Room service was unable to accommodate because they were short staffed.

This is a very nice clean hotel minutes walk from all the shops and restaurants in Downtown Portsmouth. It's a beautiful area to stay in, and a beautiful walk awaits you as you go out the door. Staff is friendly and they have social distancing signs and measures up all over the place. They are currently offering grab and go breakfast boxes (see picture).

Other reviews are correct that some front desk staff are not always wearing their mask, but they fail to mention there is plexiglass at the front desk and tables placed in front of the front desk to promote social distancing. Most of the staff do put on their masks when a guest approaches. But that those that don't are at least 6 feet away.

Currently they are not offering valet parking, so you have to park in one of the public parking lots. Nearest one is right across the street and charges $2 USD per hour.
