From what we saw the hotel is being updated. The lobby has a fresh modern and comfortable look with inviting seating areas. Our room was nicely designed and furnished. Wish the tv allowed access to streaming services. Wish housekeeping provided more towels and toiletries given the reduced housekeeping schedule. There is a lot of work going on in the building connected to the hotel - the retail spaces are getting a major face lift. We didn't hear any noise from the work. Having easy access to so many shops will be very convenient for future stays. An exterior space in front of the hotel is being redone with seating and landscaping. We had dinner in the hotel's small restaurant. Food was fine and prices were typical of a hotel location in the area. A couple of things to note: the raised corridor from Penn Station to the hotel was not open during our stay. Also the front door to the lobby is locked. Guests have keys but new arrivals must ring a bell and wait for admittance.

The airport driver was very professional, the staff at the desk made check in quick and easy. First impression was good people, but a tired location. I assume the property is in a refurbishment phase from comments made by others compared to the floor I was on. The hallways wall treatments are overdue for replacement and gave off a dingy and worn appearance. My room was was clean and well appointed. The restaurant was a bit cramped but the staff and food were good.

The hotel is conveniently located for Newark Airport (via the free shuttle) and NYC (via the $2.75 PATH train).

We were checked in very quickly, and given a free cookie each. Although I asked for a quiet room on the highest floor possible (10th), I was told that due to Maintenance, I had a room on the 5th. This was right next to the elevator, but the internal ambient noise was minimal. The beds were comfortable, shower was powerful and everywhere was clean.

It transpires that rooms aren’t serviced daily at this hotel ‘due to Covid’, and we had a rather rude gentleman bring us replacement (dirty) towels on the 3rd night. He became ruder when we asked for fresh towels, and for our bins to be emptied.

The Duty Manager is meant to be investigating the reason why our room wasn’t serviced on the 3rd day, despite the receptionist saying that she would get it done for us.

Terrific hotel with great rooms, friendly people, and a fine restaurant/bar. Couldn't be more conveniently located for commuting/travel to and from NYC (train, PATH, NYTransit, Newark Airport) to NYC or getting out of town.

Worst experience ever in a hotel!! Stayed with my two kids (14 and 8) for 4 nights. Arrived at hotel around 10pm, checked in and went to our room. It was clean and comfortable. The problem to this hotel is not the hotel but the kind of guest that they receive, no idea if it is for it's location but people here had no consideration to others. They were smoking marijuana in the hallways and in the rooms, every time that I was heading out the room with my kids we will receive the slap in the face of the marijuana smell, spoke to the front desk agent about this and did nothing but spray the hallways with Lysol. People went to sleep around 2am-3am so in the meantime we had to wait until they decided to rest so we could do the same because we felt as if their "party" was in our room. We experienced everything here, high conversations late at night, smoking all night and even a fight in the hallway! Security NEVER showed up. It was really bad to stay with kids and not feeling secure. Restaurant is still closed so if you want to eat something will have to go across the street to Penn Station. Ah! And if you have an early in the morning flight, like mine at 730am, prepare yourself to pay for a taxi or UBER because the shuttle starts at 7am. Will NEVER stay here again!!

I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn Station in mid-May 2021 for some business in the area. It's in a great location next to the train station and relatively close to the airport and other business needs I had in the area. The room was relatively clean, but it was in obvious need of a refresh. There were some questionable stains in the carpeting (I'm going to tell myself someone spilled a bottle of red wine), scratches and scuffs on most of the furniture, and holes in some of the towels.

For a modern, business hotel, USB ports and outlets for charging electronics were sorely missing. The internet speed was poor at best, when it was working at all. It would constantly drop out for a minute or two at a time.

I was disappointed by the lack of food options within the hotel (unlike other New Jersey hotels in the time of COVID) and was recommended to go across the street to the train station, where most of the food options were closed. This was especially noticeable in the morning when you would have the option to pay an exorbitant amount of money for a "to to" bag that other Hilton properties provide for free. The parking charges ($85 total for two nights) was also excessive.

There is some construction going on at the hotel, so there's a lot of dust everywhere and the walkway to the train station is closed.

I don't know if I would stay here again.

This hotel is a complete dump. I have stayed at many Doubletrees and other Hilton properties and this one does not fit the brand at all. It is dirty, old, unsanitary, and lacking the basics. Not only did it not live up to Hilton's enhanced cleaning policy, it did not even live up to basic cleanliness and health standards. The room I stayed in looked like someone had been bludgeoned to death in it. There were what appeared to be large pools of blood that were poorly cleaned and very visible all over the carpet. And also what appeared to be blood splashed on the bathroom door. I spoke to the woman at the front desk about it and showed her pictures and she nonchalantly said that she thinks they are just wine stains...wow! As if that would be acceptable to leave stained all over the room. But to have the amount of fluid in various places as this room had someone would have had to have poured out 3-4 different bottles in various areas, which is highly unlikely. To top it all of I woke up with bites all over my leg, which most likely came from bed bugs. This is by far the worse hotel I have stayed in and as a Hilton Honors member who has stayed at many Hilton properties I am amazed that this hotel has been allowed to carry that name. The fact that they have no restaurant, no breakfast options at all, no microwaves in the rooms, broken ice machines, broken vending machines, no curtains to cut out the outside light, homeless people sleeping at the door, and don't give you the famous Double Tree cookie are small details after everything else we encountered there. Avoid this place if you care about your health and well-being.

Stayed here at the start of my holiday, flight arrived into Newark around 9pm with our train being at 9 the next morning. With three young children in tow seemed like a good option to stay in this hotel right across the road from Newark Penn Station, so very handy for our train the next morning.

On booking, I was pleased to see that Hilton now guarantee interconnecting rooms, something I’ve never had with the children as Im aware its something which is often hard to actually receive.

However…

Arrived at the check in desk around 1030pm after an exhausting day flying from the UK. Very tired children to be told, ‘we are sorry Mr X but we cant get you rooms together, it is never guaranteed as you know’. Er no I don’t know actually. I proceeded to point out Hilton’s newly launched guarantee only to be told that ‘we are full you know’ and ‘ you should have phoned early in the day (when I was flying presumably). I explained that it was simply not acceptable to have rooms apart and for them to put my in any other room. They announced they would ‘upgrade me’ to a suite, which of course I pointed out was not an upgrade and all I wanted was the rooms I had booked. After some fuss they put me in a suite and agreed to send up some extra beds for the children.

The room was hideous, dirt under the beds, stains on the carpet etc. After about 20 mins (and after calling twice) we eventually had a knock on the door from a very grumpy man with two of the most disgusting rollaway beds Ive ever seen. He begrudgingly delivered them to us saying he would be back soon with the bedding – he wasn’t and we had to call again to get these. We then had to make the beds up including the sofa for my third child. All in all we all got to sleep around 1am.

Next morning and having read again the press release from Hilton announcing the guarantee of connecting rooms, I demanded to see the duty manager who assured me that ‘there will be some terms of conditions somewhere’ and ‘we never guarantee’. Furthermore he asked me ‘what do I want because Im not comping the room’ I emailed him the link to the press release (which he had clearly never seen) and informed him that I will allow him to read it whilst I had breakfast with my family then will come and see him again and he can then decide what he will and wont do.

After breakfast he came up from his office and just told me ‘Ive comped your room’ without even looking at me.

All in all horrible experience. I didn’t want a suite, I didn’t want a free room, I just wanted what I had paid for, an interconnecting room for a family of five. This is why I rarely stay in hotels with my family anymore. Appalling by Hilton.

On the positive side, breakfast was very good and gentleman serving us was super friendly with the children

Everything here for our stay was fantastic! We were nervous about safety since the reviews of Newark Penn station are concerning, but the safety precautions here are great! Absolutely no bathrooms can gain access without a hotel key or someone to buzz you in, which are great precautionary measures in case a shady person actually does get in! You also need a key card in order to gain access to elevator floors. Check in/out was smooth and me and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed our fresh cookies! Even though we were in room 804 next to the elevator, we had no problem with noise from the elevator or neighbors. Hotels are normally notorious for bad pillows, but I found these ones to be exceptionally great! Bed was good to! Plenty of space inside the room to stretch out with comfortable temps manageable, bathroom was small but acceptable.

Also note, the restaurant in the hotel is absolutely FANTASTIC!! We had a late lunch when we arrived and got their loaded fries, a pep pizza, blue moon, 2 diet cokes, and slice of cheesecake. All came to $60 before tip, and it was a great deal because portion sizes were quite generous. We loved it so much we came back before we left the next day and I got an avocado BLT sandwich with housemade chips, absolutely delicious and big enough to share! Waiters were all absolutely wonderful as well. Do yourself a favor and eat at this restaurant if you are staying here or simply find yourself by the skywalk at Newark Penn Station! Excellent!

Desk staff almost checked me into wrong room handed me keys and everything till I said I had two rooms they even had checked my id. The rooms were suppose to be connecting rooms called days in advance also day before we got there and went up to find my rooms were rooms apart. I'm a hilton honors Gold member and with their new "my way" preferences I was to get $48 for a food and beverage credit for breakfast having two rooms with 4 adults nope only saw $36 of it come off from both rooms and that was only after having to call 3 times.

Hello Voyager112944, Thank you for reaching out to us at the DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Penn Station. The hotel does have a complimentary shuttle but it only travels to and from the airport. We find that a majority of our guests who wish to go to the cruise terminals utilize local ride share services. Guest Relations Manager
