I would have little hesitation recommending this charming guesthouse situated right in the heart of downtown Franschhoek - with one major drawback.... the lack of aircon makes the rooms very hot, especially those situated right on the street. The provision of fans help a bit, but in the long term this would therefore could not be a B&B of first...

You are right that some rooms get fairly hot in summer but it is top priority on the to do list of the new owners to get air conditioning installed before next summer. This guest house has changed owners since our previous visit in 2016. We found everything to be much the same as before. Christopher the manager is still there and as helpful as ever. We love this GH as it's close to every where and the pool area gets the after-noon sun which is important yo us. This time we we're...

Do not stay as de Alchemist Guesthouse if the forecast is for hot weather. Whilst the accommodation is comfortable and the location is excellent, a lack of investment in air conditioning makes the rooms unbearable in any hot weather.

Dear Andre Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are aware of the problem and will be trying to install air conditioning by next summer. As we recently took over the property, we could not do all renovations all at once, but you can be assured that air conditioning is high on our priority list. We...

Return visit to this guesthouse and not disappointed. The new owners have updated the rooms and it was good to see they had kept the excellent staff. Really convenient for walking to all that Franschoek offers on its Main Street, and the wine tram.

Under new management, the same wonderful staff, and standards. It is a lovely guest house, extremely comfortable, in a beautiful relaxing setting, and location is perfect for Main Street and surrounding Wine Farms. We would certainly recommend.

We were asked by the owner to wait until 'Le Macaron' website was up and running to save confusion and any overlap from possible unfavourable reviews of previous 'De Alchemist' However, having seen the new reviews citing the name Macaron (and still unable to track down the website) I thought it's time after a month and a half to 'spill...

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our two nights at the excellently located and renamed Macaron Guesthouse. Breakfast in the garden with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains is hard to beat. We will certainly seek to return one day.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The story of 'De Alchemist'. Cafe in Ghent, Belgium - Guesthouse in Franschhoek, South Africa During the Spring of 2013, Yves & Martine decided to start a new adventure by opening a nice little cafe in the old medieval town of Ghent, Belgium. They called it 'De Alchemist'. Because the place was so popular, Adrian and Emma - their 2 youngest children - also started working at the bar and it became a beautiful family business. On the wave of happiness and adventure, Yves and Martine took things one step further. During a short holiday in South Africa, they decided to buy a let down bed & breakfast and started another big adventure.
