We only stayed here for one night and I thought that the rooms, although a bit run down, where clean and the beds were quite comfortable. All the utilities worked (air-con etc.) although we didn't have any hot water. The food was ordinary and I thought that it was good for the price you payed. It was a bit weird because it seemed like we were the only people in the hotel because breakfast/lunch was deserted. The juice was powdered so I wasn't impressed by that. Overall, a good hotel to stay at for a few nights at max.

This is my trickiest review yet because this is such a mixed bag. When I got here I thought 'oh my god' but I ended up staying an extra night which probably says a lot. Here's why:

The ugly: the swimming pool is a case of 'it could certainly be used ... in an emergency' to quote Basil Fawlty. It's pretty damned horrible. Breakfast was also a grim affair: two slices of white toast-ish and a fried egg with two hideous tinned things. If there were others staying in the huge hotel it wasn't obvious.

The bad: it's really faded. Some people will freak out at how shabby and drear it is now.

The good. But when all of the above is said and done I got a rate of 500bht for my third night (ditching breakfast). For that you get an aircon room with a mini fridge, a desk and a bath that you can use if you get a plug from reception and dangle the shower in to fill. It's right in the centre of Korat. The receptionist who initially seemed grumpy warmed to me and generally people in Korat were delightful. Which leads me to the next point: what a surprise the town is. There are real proper coffee bars (try the one left out the hotel and 400 m down on the right just before the big covered market) - gorgeous Americano for 20bht. The small night market almost opposite to the right has good stalls. Especially try the Chinese noodle place 2/3rds down on the left: sensational noodle soup with pork for 40baht. Then just opposite left the small covered market try the smoothie lady. She's lovely and does a banana shake for instance for 20 baht. Don't forget to go to the water park. Fantastic for running / cycling and just a lovely spot.

So would I come back here? Well if I was on a budget yes I would.

Chomsarung is a shadow of its former self. I imagine in the early 90's it was the place to be, but now its kind of...weathered. That was my first opinion, and I am not saying it is a horrible place. Its relatively cheap, has a lot of space and the amenities are good. For 500 baht I had a massive room, roughly 20sqm, daily water and towel change, air con, TV, A BATH (which is rare in these parts), and a central city location; And I realise that foe 500 baht it is pretty good. The bed was comfortable and the staff are friendly. There is a clean swimming pool, coffee shop and restaurant on site, also a place to wash your clothes and free Wi-Fi in the lobby area. The hotel is situated directly across the road from the night bazaar and within walking distance of the majority of Korat's attractions. For a comfortable stay in Korat its on the money. But.it just lacks that warm feel I enjoy about a new place.

Room Tip: Ask for the 500 baht room and if you want free Wi-Fi ask for a room on floor 2.

The Chomsurang Hotel was just awful. First, when they took my booking, they quoted me a price of 800 baht a night for a standard twin room without breakfast. When I checked in two days later it had become 950 baht with breakfast. When I asked about the difference, all I got was grouchiness and insistence that was the rate. I asked to speak to the manager, but was told he was in Bangkok. It was a horrible start, but it was close to midnight and my group of six was tired, so we took the rooms.

Next, my room had an awful smell, and when I went downstairs the next morning to ask for a change, I was told they couldn't do it, even though I could see that there weren't many guests. After all, my group were the only people at breakfast, which while advertised as an American Breakfast, was not the usual buffet spread. It consisted of two eggs, two slices of ham, thin toast and suspicious juice.

It was a sad, sad place, with only one receptionist at night who was most unhelpful. Same goes for her daytime counterpart. The hotel looked like it was only operating one floor and I felt as if I was imposing on the staff by staying there and giving them work to do.

I walked two streets down to the Korat Hotel and got a room there instead. Staff were much friendlier, and it cost just 550 baht for a larger room, without breakfast.

The night plaza of Korat has totally down to the dog. What a pity! This hotel suppose to be the best location and now is so deserted.

Yet, the merit of this hotel is still there. The restaurant right adjacent is superb! The restaurant looks like a coffee kiosk but in fact cater for Thai cuisine as well.

For 600 Baht + hotel, I wont expect much and at least free wifi is provided. The Night Plaza was quite disappointed with faded previous glory. Yet, to sit at the restaurant, sipping beer or wine or liquor, enjoying good food, cool air, I think is still a pleasure.

I've stayed here for the first time 27 years ago when this place had its peak reputation. Meanwhile it has been just fixed up over and over and over again. The bathtub was ripped out, tiled up and the hot water system was quick-fixed with a hot water heater on the wall without grounding wire. The air-condition rattled its duty through the night without we sweated - both did not contribute to a good night's rest. The beds are well worn to say the least and the breakfast (at 7.30 am) consisted of completely cold fried eggs cooked hours before, Boncafé coffee boiling in a glass jug with an extremely bitter smell and the rice soup was more soup than rice. With a THB 500 note in hand I was asking for fresh coffee, freshly cooked fried eggs and some fresh toast or some new rice soup - the elder lady in charge of the breakfast said that for this price it's what you see is what you get. We opted to have breakfast outside. No more; this place is ready for a take/make over! And in doing so, get a make-over on the entire staff except the room maids as well!
Shall stay elsewhere next time in town!
