Mala Mala was one of four camps I stayed at during May, 2015. The issue is that the camp offers inconsistent opportunites. The size of the reserve and the game offerings are among the best. The Land Rovers are limited to seating six in three rows and the rangers are top notch. The problem is that the physical facility is...

As ex-South Africans we believe we have a reasonable sense of the African wild and what is on offer to locals and visitors from abroad. We have visited a number of camps over the years in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania. Recently, my wife and I visited South Africa from Australia on business and to visit family. In addition,...

Luxurious camp with "great white hunter" vibe. You will definitely see the "big 5" and more: lions, rhino, hippo, etc. Niel is an unbelievable tracker `& guide. animals from the terrace by the river every meal.

It simply could not be more wonderful, from the pick up at the airport to the game reserve. The early morning safari trips are amazing, the afternoon/evening tracks are even more spectacular. Each party is allocated a ranger, who stays with you at all times and is knowledgable beyond belief. To track the Big Five is a dream, and to...

(full information post and review on Mala Mala: http://www.cornersandcrannies.com/muses-on-a-south-african-safari-mala-mala/) For five days we stayed in Mala Mala, a luxury game reserve in Sabi Sands, Mpumalanga (quite a mouthful) province. We took a rickety air carrier with 20 seats from Johannesburg. I could barely breathe inside. Finally, we arrived to our 4×4 jeep pickup. All the plane’s passengers were a part...

We arrived at Mala Mala as part of an organised 19 day tour of South Africa. We were met by the rangers who looked after us very well for the duration of our visit. special thanks to Bens our ranger for helping us to see the Big Five on our very first game drive. It was a treat to see...

I agree with a previous guest, it resembles a 3 star motel not a 5 star game reserve. It is not how it looks online and is in dire need of money being spent on it. Not bad for someone who can't stretch to a 'proper ' lodge. Good points are location and rangers.

Don't think twice about staying here! You will be amazed!! We can't wait to go back!! We spent five days at Malamala Main Camp and were very impressed with the entire operation. We were in #23 with no river view, but plenty of wildlife passed by our windows including a leopard chasing a baboon! We also had a monitor Lizard...

I was on my own at Mala Mala, having luckily secured the one single room that they have (thus NOT incurring the 100% single supplement for the stay). I'm not really sure what a double room would have been like, as mine was enormous, and actually had two separate bathrooms. The rooms were amazing, and despite warnings to the contrary,...

We were at Main Camp March 3-5, part of a small group tour in South Africa and surrounding countries. It was our first trip to Africa. The time spent at Mala Mala was the highlight of the entire trip and exceeded all our expectations. Our cottage #23 was spacious and comfortable with two large bathrooms and every amenity provided. Our...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
