Unpretentious elegance is the only way to describe Rattray's. We were met on arrival by the managing couple, Nareen and Alex, who escorted us to our villa. Bigger than our house and couldn't get over the luxurious accommodations. When we were brought out to our private deck and plunge pool, we had a welcoming committee of a herd of elephant,...

We visited MalaMala in early October for 4 nights. We had previously stayed at Londolozi Granite Suites and also stayed 4 nights at Singita Boulder Lodge on this trip. I will try to do a comparison of the 3 as a separate post. Rattray's had really fantastic game viewing. Some of the best we have seen across 7 or 8...

This exquisite resort was easily accessible yet remote enough for a complete safari experience. Accommodations were luxurious, our Ranger Fritz was gracious, fun, knowledgeable, energetic, accommodating any and every request. From reception to departure Fritz provided a perfect safari adventure ensuring viewing not only The Big Five and additional animal wild life but educated us about the flora and fauna too. The oldest & largest private reserve in South Africa, it shares a long open border with Kruger. The impeccable personalized service and 8 huge Kyahas will blow you away. With only 16 guests at a max, Rattray's is pre eminent game lodge in SA. With the best facilities and largest land mass, Rattray's attracts the most game and the best...

Our guide Fritz was The best. He was able to get us so close to the animals. We feel he went above and beyond to give us the best views and knowledge of the animals, I would tell all of my friends to GO TO RATTRAY'S Mala Mala and ask for Fritz. You won't be sorry.

Words cannot describe my experience here. So it's easier to say all the other excellent reviews are correct. I saw lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and a myriad of other animals. It felt like i saw them all. Our guide Dave was simply superb. He also just happens to be a zooologist who is as excited as i was to see...

Amazing elegance and hospitality surrounded by beautiful animals. We enjoyed everything about Rattray's. Traveling with our daughter and her husband meant that we had a "truck" to ourselves throughout. Gordon, our guide, was one of the most experienced and really fabulous. And we liked the way that guides eat with the guests. We saw the "big seven", and by the...

Absolutely wonderful stay, I'm not sure where to start with the review! Rattrays has only a few villas so the number of guests is always limited, giving it a very peaceful air (and low ecological impact). Our villa was one of the first, closer to the central lodge. It was very spacious, beautifully furnished, wonderful comfortable bed, spotlessly clean, and...

My husband and I spent 5 nights at Rattray's, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We are diehard safari goers, and wildlife viewing is always first on the priority list. That being said, it doesn't hurt if you can get great wildlife and wonderful accommodations, such as at Rattray's. Absolutely nothing to complain about with respect to the rooms, the camp, the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
