We spent 1 night at Simbavati River Lodge and 1 night at Simbavati Hilltop Lodge due to their current specials. It's still a splurge for South Africans even at the special rate. The communal areas of River lodge are wonderful, the rooms were lovely, we saw a few antelope right next to our tent and the birdlife in the trees surrounding is incredible. The managers are so friendly and the service was faultless, the staff are really lovely. A highlight was a hyena visiting us in the boma!!! Only downsides: please don't expect an abundance of wildlife in Timbavati, we did see a pack of wild dogs one day, but besides that we went for 30 minutes at a time on the game drives not even seeing an antelope. Our guide was also very unenthusiastic compared to the guides at Hilltop Lodge which also put a dampener on the experience. The tracker was just as uninterested. Pool area could do with a renovation. Food good. Alcohol nice and cheap! Overall a great stay!

Response from Simbavati Safari Lodges, General Manager at Simbavati River Lodge
Responded Nov 19, 2020
Dear Beverly, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your stay, it is always very valuable. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay in general and we will also pass on your comments (good and bad) to all the staff involved. As far as the game viewing is concerned, the Timbavati is actually known for its wonderful game viewing and I know that you were unlucky the 2 days that you were here. The animals and the bush just do not always play along! Currently, the game viewing is absolutely great, and that is what we are used to. We share your sentiment about the pool. There are wonderful new plans in place for a totally new pool area and spa, but unfortunately, Covid put a halt to these. We hope to welcome you back in the future and please send our best regards to Bolt

Me and my wife went to Simbavati for our Honeymoon, I arranged to have something special done for us, and on arrival I did not receive the romantic gesture that I wanted but none the less the second night they pulled out all the stops, champagne and candlelight dinner, with lamb chops. Was amazing.

Clemont our guide and Humpfree our tracker are very good. They learn you alot and share alot of knowledge.

OB our “butler” was a wonderful guy, so helpful and always with a smile.

The service was great, precisely what you would expect from these lodges! Food was great and wonderful portions, at some times we wanted to skip lunch, but the food is too good to miss.

The Boma braai was great. Enjoying a real wonderfull dinner. We were lucky and had a good group of poeple at pur table and could have some meaningful conversation.

The unfortunate reality of these places are, you pay a very high amount and expect to see everything that your heart desires, well that is what the guide would like to offer and we fully understand this, the problem is we dont need to drive right next to the lions or leopards, or drive through the bush to see the lion one more time,

I think most of is on the back had the same feeings about this, but for a person who has not experienced the wild in such a manner and will never come and experience africa like this I can understand it. While I am complaining abput this other people are saying they did not drive far enough in the bush. For me the constant driving between sightings was a nit to much. My wife loved it and would say this was her highlight, seeing a leopard then a lion then a elephant and Buffalo and back to lions.

Except this small problem. I loved it.

I am trying to get a spot to go back in June!
It stole my heart.

It's hard to compare lodges in the Timbavati private reserve, because who goes to enough to do so? They're all off the same long access road after a common security checkpoint, many share the same ranch access rights, and most describe themselves in similar ways. Here's what I can say: thank goodness for the private reserve, the wildlife is safe(r) and abundant and relaxed about people. We saw the Big 5 and the cast of Lion King (or nearabouts) and mothers with babies and behavior you would never see outside the wild. We had baboons and hyenas and warthogs and various boks and more traipse through our camp, so much so that we had to be escorted down a well-lighted path to our tent at night for our own good. We had a group of elephants taking mud baths about 30 yards from our outside shower. When they say the River Lodge is special because the wildlife loves the river, I believe them. One group of guests switched to the more removed Hilltop Lodge when they arrived because they thought it looked fancier, and the pool definitely is from an Instagram perspective. But we weren't there for the pool and both nearby lodges get in the same type of vehicles and scout the same bush at the same time. Our guide was fantastic, very experienced, we were lucky I think. We learned a ton and some of our favorite moments were just sitting quietly out in the field, waiting and watching and listening and smelling. Our tent was spacious and extremely comfortable, there were plenty of modern luxe details, not sure you could want more luxury in the bush. The food was good and quite remarkable when you consider the effort it takes to serve it to you. We particularly enjoyed the braai (barbecue-like grill) nights. We were happy to hang out in the airy open lodge for WiFi access and roibos tea and chat with the very friendly staff. We thought it was great.

We loved our stay at Simbavati. This was our first visit to the Timbavati Concession, although we have been to Klaserie (and other parts of GKNP before)

Simbavati river lodge is an unfenced lodge. We have stayed at many such lodges before, but we have never seen elephants and hyenas as close to our tent as we saw at Simbavati.

The outdoor shower is truly outdoor and open to the water body in front. Fortunately, there is an indoor shower too for those night showers when I wasn't confident to use the outdoor open one.

The bedding was comfortable, if a little worn. The electric blanket was great, but we wished the fan in the room would move a bit faster for air circulation, it felt almost stationary. We did speak to reception, but they said that was the maximum speed it could move at.

I really have to appreciate the lighting at this lodge, such a relief after all the minimal lighting at safari lodges. I could read comfortably in bed.

The staff was lovely. They made a cake for my husbands birthday which was truly appreciated. the food was fantastic and portions were so huge that we skipped lunch after the solid breakfasts.

Game viewing is not as dense as the Sabi Sands area, but we did manage to see the Big 5, keeping up our record of leopard sightings on EVERY Kruger trip (except Pafuri)

We do appreciate the little treat bag, they gave us for our 7 hour drive back to Johannesburg.

Like many other reviewers have said, if you love elephants this is your Lodge. Lunches and dinners are served on a large deck overlooking the currently dryish creek bed where the elephants as well as Water Buck, Wart Hog and Impala graze daily. It's pretty spectacular to be so close to these wild animals. Accommodation is both chalet and 'glamping'; there is a small pool, gym and spa. I can highly recommend "Charity" for massage and treatments. Every day in the early morning and late afternoon you are taken by a guide and a tracker on a land cruiser tour for 3 hours of Kruger Nat. Park. You will see Widerbeast Rhino, lions, leopard - the Big Five basically, plus. I enjoyed the staff and their friendly dispositions. I had only one disappointment. I found a beautiful and unique feather on the path to my accommodation. The chamber maid took it and replaced it with a feather from her feather duster. The deceit was disappointing. I did contact the management via their website but they were not interested.

We drove ourselves to the lodge and thankfully we'd made the decision to upgrade our hire car from a saloon (suggested stupidly by our UK travel agent!), to an SUV. You enter the Timbavati game reserve, paying on entry and follow the tarmac road sticking to the speed limit until you eventually reach the sign post to turn off for the Simbavati River Lodge. It's essential to stick to the speed limit on both the tarmac road and the unmade road as wildlife are everywhere! The lodge was well signposted and when we arrived we were greeted and immediately much excitement as a lioness strolled through the lodge grounds, what a welcome! This was just the start of our wildlife spotting as this lodge is unfenced and this makes the world of difference. We were staying in 'waterbuck' room, each room has it's own name. We were given a welcome briefing but at the time we weren't informed that our 'all inclusive' package didn't include all drinks, some were excluded. We only realised this when we checked out at the end of our stay and received a bill!
Our butler was wonderful. She really looked after us and we thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic food, both at the boma evening and the individual evening.
We stayed for 4 nights, you need to so that you get the most of your experience from the game drives as a lot of the time I'd spent tracking but patience pays off. We saw leopard for the first time on safari and we've been several times before.
Make sure you take lots of layers, the morning game drives start at 6am and it was freezing cold. The temperature varied so much when we were there from 40 degrees one day to 20 degrees the next!!
Our room was one of the furthest away from the lodge but this just lead to lots more animals coming to the front. One day we laid in bed and saw monkeys, warthogs, antelope and lots more outside. It was magical! Before leaving your room when it's dark, you need to call the main lodge and they send a guide with a torch to collect you from your room.
Talking of guides on the game drives, we had Knowledge who like his name, had lots of interesting knowledge which we appreciated!
Thank you also to Alex who went out of his way to spend time talking to us not just about the lodge but also about travelling in SA in general and our onward journey south. Much appreciated!
Definitely a memorable stay and one we will never forget ❤️

Good place for a safari

Shower at spa is outdoors only

Guides know a lot

Instructions for game drive were oral only -- made us wake even earlier 1-2 days. A flyer would have helped.

The photo you show is from another lodge (the hilltop lodge?)

Stayed at Simbavati River Lodge from 14th June to 18th June 2021.
The service at Simbavati is just fabulous, the meals were excellent.
the special little things that are done for you mean a lot.
they got me halal meat and our Chef Gershwin came to me before preparing each meal, to show me the meat that had a halal labels.
Our driver Themba is a wealth of knowledge and explained whatever we saw in detail.
Our Tracker Thabo, was the silent type, but boy, could he track, we tracked a Leopard for 2 hours and final saw it in a drainage donga.
Our Butler Krina, was the best, always making sure that everything was in order.
we celebrated out 40th Wedding Anniversary, and a private meal was set up for us at the pool side, with lovey lighting and a great log fire.
Our highlight was 2 Lioness and 2 Cubs just outside our Luxury Tent, and a Leopard walked in on them and ran off, that was the Leopard we tracked, then a Water Bucked suddenly appeared and one of the Lioness gave chase, the Buck bolted into the river and spooked the Hippos who splashed and grunted to the middle of he river, all this in a space of 10mins.
The resident Hyena name Petros, was a bit scary at times, but I suppose all part of the experience.
Just fabulous, I am definitely going back.

We had a phenomenal trip to River Lodge. From the moment we arrived until the last day we left the staff were fantastic, remembering our names, our food and drink preferences and what we liked and didn't liked. The small details in the room were so thoughtful (I won't give it away for the next guest to be surprised). The game drives (6 hrs a day in total) were fantastic! Jeff and Shaddy were incredible and kudos to Shaddy for finding that leopard spoor and giving us the best experience ever of seeing that beautiful creature. We saw the Big 5 which was awesome.
Nothing better than sitting on that deck having lunch and dinner admiring the wildlife around us. Had a great massage...a must for anyone who loves massages! And to top it off our final special dinner under the trees with candles everywhere was a perfect way to top off our stay (not forgetting the hyena that just about joined us for dinner! A true African lodge if you want to see the wild up close and personal!

Dear ‘Maren B’ Reading your review was like reading a story, and we loved it! We are absolutely thrilled to have been able to serve you, and share in the magic of our very special piece of Africa. It sounds like you were very lucky on safari, as tracking and then finding a leopard is a very special experience - being part of the search is half the pleasure! I have passed on your feedback to our teams, as I know it will make them smile. We hope to welcome you back again soon! Sincerely, Kobus and the Smbavati River Lodge Team

This is probably the easiest review I have ever written. The visit was faultless from beginning to end. The Lodge is extremely comfortable and small enough that you can get to meet and talk to all the others staying.

We stayed for 4 nights, which I think is about right, I am not sure I would go for less than 3 or more than 5 nights, but you need time to see all the wonderful animals (mammals and birds) and it takes time to get round 55,000 hectares.

The rooms/tents are large, extremely comfortable and enable you to watch animals from your veranda. Since there is no fence, lots of wildlife wanders through, including elephants! The staff take your safety very seriously and during night hours, escort you to/from your room.

The food is plentiful and delicious with Braai every other night, where you eat in your group, and al a carte on the alternative nights. If I could give the Lodge ONE piece of advice, we would have liked a little more light on our table, as we couldn't see what we were eating, and not only did it taste good it looked wonderful too (thanks to iPhone torches!).

All the staff are wonderful, our range was Andre and tracker Nicholas, their knowledge was superb and we saw all the Big Five (some multiple times). We had two drives each of 3 hours morning and evening, and time flew by!

Our butler was Bishop, he looks after us wonderfully and had a smile at all times with an infectious laugh.

The best time to go is in the SA winter months, while we were there the high was 40c, but the next day it crashed to 20c with a 55kph wind, which made the drives bitterly cold (it didn't worry the wildlife), so I would advice you take lots of layers and dress appropriately.

A truly wonderful experience and you are hosted by a faultless team at the top of their game.
