This is the best 4 star country hotel in the whole of the Klein Karoo! An ideal stop-over between Cape Town and the Garden Route, a must-stay for any visitor! Best food and most comprehensive wine list in the whole of the Klein Karoo! Restaurant has just won the Klein Karoo Gourmand Award ! We have a few signature dishes, reflecting the ethos of the Chaîne des Rộtisseurs, the international gastronomical guild dedicated to the camaradie of the table. Some of these dishes are unique to the Karoo. Loads of historic character. Most friendly staff. Rooms with balconies and views available. Character bar and great restaurant. Huge swimming pool for hot summer days. Many open fireplaces for the winter nights! Karoo hospitality. The hotel is an art gallery with many paintings by local artists on display and for sale. Some rooms with cable TV available. Staff are keen to share local things to do and to see with guests. We even have a private 40 seater private cinema for use by our guests!

Review collected in partnership with this hotel
We found this hotel very different from anywhere else we have stayed (in a good way!) Loved the ‘Banksy’ images outside (not sure if genuine, but fun anyway!) and the huge collection of paintings and fun items decorating the place. The pool was very refreshing on a hot day with

An interesting property decorated with local artwork everywhere you look which makes the atmosphere. The rooms are large without aircon (no big deal) but some of the hotel basics are lacking, probably due to the old systems. Our room had no hot water at 1700 I guess due to

Hi Luke- and I thought you said you were here to save me? Our pool was popular and busy due to the heat and to the tour group staying in the hotel - hence the shortage of recliners when you arrived at the pool. The other guests later left, new towels were distributed and new guests could use the recliners. Due to the small area available in the swimming pool enclosure - and the very low frequency at which such overcrowding happens- there unfortunately is not anything we can do to this situation if and when it occurs. The very same group checked in before you, all showered and depleted the hot water. the hot water only takes an hour to refill and re-heat. That enabled you to enjoy a nice hot shower somewhat later. We checked the shower to room 10 thoroughly and found no leak or drip. None of the guests who occupied that room before or after you complained about this. We have to deduce from this you did not close both shower taps tightly and that this was the cause of the problem that night. Guests should simply pick up the phone and our maintenance team will immediately sort out all problems -real or perceived. We have a lovely garden at our hotel and it certainly is not unkempt. It is a happy country garden ,precisely the way we like it. We specifically did not want a formal manicured garden as it would not have been appropriate in the Klein Karoo. But yes, tastes differ. Our pool was busy that hot afternoon and used by several guests. When that happens, the water gets a but milky. This happens to all pools ,as anyone acquainted with swimming pool maintenance will tell you. We cannot apply chemicals whilst the guests are using the pool- we however did so after the last guests went inside . The next morning the pool was 100% bright blue again. There is nothing that even Obi-Wan Kenobi could do to prevent this. Fortunately it does not happen often. We carefully curate the music we play in the different areas of the hotel. We take care that sound levels are within reasonable norms- and are happy to hear your sleep was peaceful and undisturbed. We pride ourselves on our good food and excellent wine list and are happy that you enjoyed our cuisine. "I won't fail you.I am not afraid". From your guest comment form you completed at the hotel upon checking out, you gave us very good ratings on everything. You wrote that our hotel's quirkiness was the factor you liked most about the hotel. You stated that you would recommend our hotel. You assessed us at an wonderful score of 4 /5 - that is an excellent 90% ! - for which we thank you. We are therefore sure you made an error when you only allocated a 2/5 score (40%! - 50% less than your guest comment form filled in at the hotel) to us in your TripAdvisor review . We certainly do not deserve such a low rating and we do not interpret from your TripAdvisor review or your guest comment form handed in at the hotel that you were unhappy about your stay. In fact ,our hotel manager Kyle Berry had several interactions with both of you during your stay and he says both of you were very happy with your stay at all times. This clear slip of your finger is now unfairly smudging our reputation with the low score of 2/5- please take this up with TripAdvisor and correct the slip? Let's deal with your last sentence. We have been operating our hotel for 8 years. we employ 20 excellent staff members, all of whom are breadwinners in their families. We shall not fail if our guests treat and rate us ethically and fairly and know how to count / calculate percentages. And if they remember how they rated us in their friendly discussions with our general manager and in the guest comment form they handed in at reception. Luke,do the right thing and undo your wrong 2/5 rating to a 4/5 rating, like you rated us at the hotel. And no,this is not adverse management reaction- I give you the facts and I correctly calculate the % rating you gave us at the hotel. Regards Theo Owner

Karoo Art Hotel is a treasure. It was one of the top 3 places we stayed at on our 2+ week tour of South Africa, and we were universally impressed. The rooms are of high standard, interior grounds very pleasant, dinner and breakfast were superb. The art decor in the hotel was a

We stopped off at the Karoo Art hotel en route from Knysna to Cape Town. It’s a wonderful place, full of atmosphere and eccentricity. The rooms and public spaces are decorated with art that is for sale. The hotel is situated around a garden and pool. We had a lovely room with

Thank you for your good feedback, which is much appreciated! Our character hotel dates from 1888. We are continuously busy with upgrading of our rooms and facilities but we are not a modern snazzy establishment- character and charm weighs more heavily here. we are happy that you experienced it that way!. We focus on hospitality, great food and wine, and sharing of our extensive local knowledge to ensure our guests enjoy a truly authentic local Klein Karoo experience. to get the best value from this,we recommend a stay of at least two nights, preferably three nights- there is plenty to see and do -but,importantly,in the Karoo one also needs time to simply relax next to the swimming pool or in the lounge with a good book / go on long walks / chat to our locals in our fine bar / take an afternoon nap!
