Nestled in a prime location, the Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa is celebrated by guests for its charming, rustic atmosphere and stunning lakeside views. The inn's amenities, including the spa, pools, and dining options, receive high marks, though some suggest there's room for improvement in maintenance. While opinions on value vary, with some travelers finding the cost appropriate for the luxury provided, others point out issues with facilities and extra charges.
Rooms are generally well-regarded for comfort and cleanliness, yet a few guests mention outdated decor and noise. The service at the inn is consistently praised for being friendly and attentive.

Called Mirror Lake Inn to book a last minute trip. Was Optimistic based on online photos and reviews.
Pros: Amenities: Big beautiful Outdoor pool is a big perk. Lakefront is nice with kayaks and canoes. Views from rooms are very good- it is situated on a hill with sweeping lake views. Nice outdoor firepit, beautiful planted flower gardens. Even an apple tree. I like that dogs were not allowed to run around the property as they are at some hotels where the dog situation has gotten WAY out of control and are treated like humans. Nice that they have evening smores but would prefer more scheduled activities like many resorts offer now. Great location walkable to town. Service was attentive, everyone was friendly and well trained, and it seems like they really want to make guests happy which was greatly appreciated. The renovated rooms are very comfortable, good size, make sure to ask for one!
Cons: Indoor pool should be better maintained. Was cloudy. Lobby and common areas would benefit from renovations. Heat outdoor pool warmer so people use the outdoor pool and dont crowd the indoor pool. Food should be higher quality (specifically, spring for the higher quality breakfast sausage, and cook the bacon crispy, those who stay at many hotels notice the difference in things like that). Oatmeal, fruits and mini croissants were good! We only had one breakfast here so cannot speak to other meals. Also the ac even in the newer rooms beeps as it goes on and off throughout the night. The room rate in Aug 2024 totaled over 700+ per night. For that price, you would expect top notch facilities and some nice activities. With a few tweaks this could be a top notch stay!

We just returned from celebrating our anniversary at the Inn. We enjoyed the Inn, Amenities, and Staff so much that we extended our reservation an additional night. The Inn is wonderful and all areas (room, restaurants (View and Cottage) sitting areas, exercise room, beach/boathouse/docks) are all well maintained and clean. The entire staff at all locations (front desk, housekeeping, restaurants, boathouse, gift shop, grounds/pool maintenance are all very welcoming, personable, and always ready to assist if needed with a greeting and a smile. The food at the View and the Cottage was delicious and delightfully presented. We have previously stayed and/or dined at the MLI numerous times over the years going back to the 1980’s and look forward to future visits.

What a splendid old inn! Its 1920s Adirondack decor and flair really are special. The public rooms are woody and yet light-filled, with sitting spaces, antiques, old books, and beautiful views. Guest rooms are well furnished, understatedly elegant, and scrupulously clean. Breakfasts are delicious, and coffee, tea, and cookies are always available. In addition, the staff are as pleasant and helpful as they come, all of them. It's a welcoming, comfortable place. I should add that it has lots of amenities that I didn't have time to explore, but certainly will the next time I stay.
Reading some of the negative reviews astounded me. If guests want brand-new, corporate-style sleek interiors, the Inn at Mirror Lake is not for them; but then, for me, and for the bulk of visitors, this well-established, immaculate lodge is exactly the thing.

The AI overview nailed it. Positives: Clean with a great location.
There is no way that it was worth the money, however, and I am honestly shocked by the AAA 4 Diamonds and their listing as one of the best resorts in NY State. The rooms are dated. The furniture is worn and the rooms are dark. This also means that there aren't enough outlets for two people's phones, laptops, watches, etc. We were on the first floor and the ceiling was so thin that we heard every footstep in the room above us. At one point, when my boyfriend was in the bathroom, I heard a sneeze and said "bless you" ... but it was the person upstairs! The wifi was free, but you get what. you pay for. We had to run our laptops off our phones. We couldn't get Netflix on the TV because the internet was too slow.
We couldn't use the safe because the was a "battery low" flashing on the safe ... and we didn't want to have our belongings locked with the inability to remove them.
And this place has so many rules! It was like staying with your grandparents. There was even a sticker on the bed when we arrived to "prove" that the sheets were clean. Nothing says luxury resort like a sticker on the sheets.
We also got the package with free breakfast, but were told that it was first come-first served. On Saturday when we showed up at breakfast, we were told that it was a 20 minute wait. The dining room was more than 1/2 empty and all we wanted was a buffet. When we offered to hit the buffet and take the food back to the room, we were told that it was against the rules. When I loudly said that the place deserved a one star review, we were suddenly seated immediately by one of the owners.
Though we declined room service, there was a surprise $10 per day housekeeping gratuity on our bill when we left! (The Management removed it.)

Dear Susan L, Thank you for having visited the Inn. We are glad that you appreciated the superior level of cleanliness we provide, and the location of the property overlooking the lake and mountains. I was sorry to see that you were disappointed with your overall stay. As I'm sure you noticed from reading the many other positive reviews that were written by actual guests (rather than by "Artificial Intelligence"), your feedback is not typical of what actual guests experience. Admittedly, we are not your typical. contemporary style hotel with lots of glass, plastic and bright colors. Instead, we have beautiful woodwork and Adirondack artifacts and decor throughout. We provide pictures of all of our guest rooms online which clearly illustrate the design and style of the Inn, so I'm not sure how we could have better represented the property. If you experienced trouble with the Wi-Fi, or with your in-room safe indicating a low battery, I apologize. I wish you had let us know. We want everyone to have a great experience and would have been happy to address those items right away. If the low battery light was on prior to your arrival, I'm sorry that we missed it. It would have been a quick and easy fix had we known about it. The sticker/seal on the bed linen is something that we implemented several years ago and find that our guests really seem to appreciate. It gives people piece of mind knowing that the linens are fresh and crisp upon their arrival. Your review was the first negative comment about this procedure we have receive in 4 years. With respect to the "many rules" you mentioned, I'm not sure if you are referring to our non-smoking policy, the fact that we don't allow dogs in the common areas of the hotel, or perhaps the policy where we ask guests to refrain from having cell phone conversations in the public areas, including the dining room. These policies are in place to ensure the comfort and safety of all of our guests and so that everyone has a pleasant and enjoyable experience. While we would hope that most are common sense, experience has shown us that isn't always the case and therefore, we do note them on our welcome literature. I'm sorry if you found any of these common sense polices to be offensive. As noted in your confirmation letter and then again at check-in, you are welcome to alter or remove the suggested housekeeping gratuity from your bill at your discretion. This is something we clearly outline, so I'm not sure why it was a surprise. We don't intend it to be. I'm glad that we promptly removed it from the bill upon your request at the time of checkout. We hope you have another opportunity to visit Lake Placid again in the future and wish you well in finding another property that is more to your liking.

Let me just start this review by stating that I absolutely love Lake Placid and visit there multiple times per year including participating in the IRONMAN. We typically stay at either Lake Placid Lodge (higher price point) or Golden Arrow (lower price point) which are both directly on the lake and entirely dog friendly. They were both sold out for this particular weekend. Before the manager responds to this review with a similar passive aggressive and defensive tone that he did with similar complaints that “we knew what we were getting into”, that is correct. The hotel did send out several emails stating and restating their insanely strict dog policy. However, this hotel does not like dogs and should not characterize themselves as dog friendly. The fact that our dog, a 10 year old chocolate lab who is the sweetest, most gentle soul ever couldn’t enter the lobby or even pee on the grass is insane. There were signs forbidding it. The mandatory crating in the room is unnecessary and they even ask you to sign a form that you’re financially responsible if your dog interrupts another guests stay, I’m not talking an attack, it could be a bark or just someone who knows the policy and is looking for a free weekend. Again, this was clear in the writings but having experienced this in person, I will never stay here again. I would much rather spend a few hundred dollars more and stay at Lake Placid Lodge where dogs could not be more welcomed (anywhere on property) and treated better or at Golden Arrow where they’re given treats and a doggy bed etc at check in. Those are truly dog friendly hotels in the area. Everyone is aware of safety and allergies but it’s how you manage it. These properties choose to have specific dog friendly rooms etc and ask that the dog always be leashed in common spaces and MLI chooses to not allow the dogs anywhere except the guest room where they’re forced to be crated.
In addition, the staff is as cold as the dated decor, they don’t give preferential treatment to guests for salon/spa reservations (they were booked solid our entire 3 day stay), and they gauge you at the restaurant. For $700 per night, you’d think breakfast would be included but not only is it not, there are no a la carte options- you must pay for the full buffet and if you want something else such as an omelette (which isn’t offered on the buffet), you need to pay for the buffet and then an additional price for the omelette even if you don’t touch the buffet. This isn’t about the few dollars more, we can afford it, it’s about feeling gauged. Just offer a la carte options at whatever price point you want.
Again, love the area and can’t wait to come back again in the fall, it just won’t be to stay at the Mirror Lake Inn.

Dear Lindsay M, Thank you for having chosen the Inn for your most recent trip to Lake Placid. As a business that prides itself on providing guests with a great experience, it is always disappointing when someone posts a 1 of 5 review. First and foremost, it means that someone was disappointed with their experience here at the Inn and that is the last thing we want for any guest. Conversely, we want guests to enjoy each and every aspect of their stay and to then come back to visit us time and time again. That is the foundation that our business is built upon. It is also disappointing because a negative, low-ranking review such as yours has a negative impact our TripAdvisor listing. Your review is obviously disappointing to us, but in this particular case, it is also frustrating and rather confusing. It is frustrating, because as you stated multiple times in your review (and I do appreciate your honesty at least), we provided detailed information about our dog policy on multiple occasions prior to your arrival. We do this because we are very transparent and don’t feel it would be fair for anyone to be surprised by the strict nature of the policy when they arrive. Being up front with the policy allows anyone who isn’t comfortable with it to make alternate arrangements. The policy is written to ensure the comfort and safety of all our guests. While we recognize and appreciate that most people are responsible and considerate dog owners, history has shown us that unfortunately that is not always the case. From a sanitary perspective, one would think that it would be common courtesy for everyone to clean up after their dog. Sadly, not everyone does. We feel it would be extremely unfair to other hotel guests to be impacted by that when trying to relax and enjoy our many well-manicured outdoor spaces. Additionally, we cannot guarantee the demeanor of a guest’s dog and are not willing to potentially risk another guest being bitten, particularly a child. We just aren’t comfortable with that possibility. As you stated in your review, we do make it clear that if someone’s dog disturbs other hotel guests (repetitive barking etc.) and we have to compensate those guests, we reserve the right to charge the dog owner. We feel this is very fair given that every guest of the hotel is paying for an enjoyable experience. Thankfully, charges of that nature are extremely rare occurrences, but history has once again shown us that not everyone is mindful of their dog’s behavior and respectful of their neighbors. Ultimately, our position is that charging for damages or disturbances caused by someone’s dog is no different than when there is a fee associated with smoking in a non-smoking room/area, particularly when such behavior disturbs other guests. I described your review as confusing as well. I say that, because over the last several years we have accommodated hundreds of guests with dogs and in that time, I can’t recall a single 1 of 5 review having been written by someone who openly acknowledged that they had been made fully aware of the dog policy prior to their arrival. We didn’t mislead you or misrepresent the policy in any way. You were first made aware of the dog policy the very same day that you booked your reservation (almost 4 months in advance of your arrival) and then multiple times again prior to your arrival via email. You chose to keep your reservation and then signed a copy of the very same policy upon your arrival, agreeing to the terms. Then, after your departure, you chose to wright a negative review about that very same policy. In closing, while we appreciate you having chosen the Inn for your recent visit, we support your decision to stay elsewhere the next time you visit Lake Placid. We want you to be comfortable and enjoy your time away. After all, everyone deserves that. Christopher Jarvis Director of Rooms Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa

We had a very mixed experience at Mirror Lake Inn. We had 15 family members in total stay at the hotel for 4 nights after Christmas and during New Years. I'll start with the good:
1.We got the bunk-bed room and the layout was great. The room was always clean and the view was beautiful.
2. The pool was fun and clean.
3. The fireplace fantastic and the fire was maintained perfectly. We spent most of our time hanging around the fireplace playing board games as we didn't have much snow during our trip.
The Bad:
1. The breakfast is very boring. It's a pain to walk into town for breakfast, especially with a big group so the hotel breakfast is really important. Unfortunately, buffet never changes and there's no omelet or pancake station so you're eating chafing-tray-dry scrambled eggs every day. The bacon was decent but by the 4th morning I was so sick of it I barely ate anything. It's $20 a person which is reasonable but it's very uninspiring.
The really bad:
2. We ate at the View for NYE and it was the WORST dining experience of my adult life. Our waiter was extremely rude and management didn't really seem to care. It is the only real confrontation I have ever had while dining in my life. After being miserable and impatient during the ordering process, he brought out my wife's salad and told her angrily, while she was in the middle of a conversation, that she would have to move either her phone or her silverware, his tone was so aggressive that she hesitated first then slid them out of the way, he then scoffed at her " Well I guess its either then" I was so taken aback by his rudeness It took me a little while to confront him. When I did he presented as if nothing had happened and that his comments were for his own understanding of the situation. If it hadn't been NYE we would have all walked out.
The NYE menu was also a complete rip off. It was the same items they alway have on the menu but without the steak. If you add up the normal price for the items it comes to around $120 but it was $200 on NYE. I got the Beef cheek which was dry.
My extended family has been traveling to the Mirror Lake Inn for over 15 years. This was my first visit and overall I was very disappointed. For my immediate families two rooms, 4 nights with breakfast and one Dinner it cost us $10,000. The NYE dinner was very unfortunate and put a bad taste in my mouth about the place on our last night but even without that, I just don't see the value.

Thank you for having been our guest for the first time recently to celebrate New Year’s 2024, and to your extended family members who have visited the property previously and always had great experiences over the past 15 years. A huge portion of our business is guests who come back time and time again because of their initial experience and we appreciate that. While we are glad that you enjoyed your guest room, the indoor swimming pool and our cozy common areas, we’re sorry that you were disappointed with your dining experiences in The View restaurant. Our numerous breakfast offerings are very popular and something that we receive many wonderful comments about. It has been our experience that guests really appreciate the flexibility we offer for breakfast and enjoy being able to choose between the room service menu, our hearty Adirondack breakfast buffet, or ordering from our a-la-carte menu in the restaurant which includes our signature flapjacks. While we hate to hear that you grew tired of any, one offering during your 4-day stay, we’re not sure how we could have offered more variety for you to choose from. With respect to your comment about your New Year’s Eve dining experience being the “worst of your adult life”, we feel compelled to let the many savvy and honest readers of this review know that of the 160 guests who dined with us that night, all but 2 were extremely complimentary and happy with their experience. We are sorry that was not the case for you, but we can’t help but wonder if this is perhaps a result of your party having contacted us in advance to complain about the menu and pricing for the New Year’s Eve menu. I’m glad that our Executive Chef explained on that call that we never want anyone to be disappointed and even went so far as to offer to cancel the reservation without penalty, if your party preferred to dine elsewhere. For some reason, one we frankly can’t quite understand, that offer was declined. It’s hard to comprehend why anyone would complain about the menu and pricing in advance, choose to keep the reservation anyway, and then write a nasty and inaccurate online review. A review that not only attacks one of our hard-working and friendly employees, but that also conveniently fails to mention that not only did the Dining Room Supervisor visit your table on multiple occasions to check on your experience, but so too did the owner’s son who was working the floor that evening. At no point did you voice displeasure to them. We find that rather strange but will let other prospective guests draw their own conclusions….. I took my daughter here for a spa trip to celebrate her birthday. I would rate the spa and the spa employees 5/5. My daughter had a package that included a facial, a massage and a pedicure and it was outstanding. The hotel lobby is charming, but our room which was $700 per night with the spa package was more like a 2 star hotel. The sheets and beds were extremely uncomfortable. When I left, my shoulder and hip were bothering me from the bed. There was an old worn rug that I didn’t want to walk on. We were charged $20 per night for a housekeeping tip and the housekeepers never entered our room. The room had a lovely view of the lake, but beyond that was not even close to being worth the price. The breakfast at the View dining room was very basic and the eggs were cold. The coffee and the service were very good though. I had to check out early to get home on Monday and when I looked at my bill, I was not credited the $200 for spa services that was part of the Pamper package and when I enquirer about it, I had to speak to the manager to get the credit. The manager acted like she was doing me a favor giving me the credit. It was like you had to ask for the things that you were told were included when you booked and then there were all of these strange charges added on. This definitely did not feel like a high end hotel experience.

Thank you for being our guest and Happy Birthday again to your daughter. We’re glad that you enjoyed the living room/lobby area, The Spa, and the service by all our staff. Thank you for letting us know about the eggs on the breakfast buffet not being hot enough, it was a very temporary issue and immediately resolved. The pamper package includes a $200 resort credit that is applied toward spa or dining services once those services are signed (charged) to your room, which is a process explained at the time of making your lodging reservation and reviewed again when you check-in. Had you charged your daughter’s spa services to your room, the credit would have automatically been deducted from your balance. We’re sorry you did not understand this. We also reminded you at check-in of the included breakfast buffet and went over the “suggested” gratuities for both the housekeeper and the breakfast server. We have found over the years that most of our guests do not carry cash and prefer the convenience of having the “suggested” gratuities added to their bill. As the Front Desk Manager again explained on the phone after your departure, we are happy to remove or alter any of the “suggested” gratuities at any time so that you can leave your own cash gratuities. Had you said at check-in, checkout or even had stopped by the desk at any point during your stay to have the housekeeping gratuities removed, we would have done so. To be clear; housekeeping service was not missed, your daughter turned the housekeeper away for daily service. I am glad the Front Desk Manager credited this back to you upon your conversation after departure. Had you also mentioned while you were here that the bed was not to your liking, we would have addressed it. Bed preferences vary from guest to guest, and we would have been happy to make you more comfortable and add a feather bed mattress topper for a softer mattress or replace it for firmer option to suit your preference. It appears you have trouble with effective communication. In summary it seems as though your experience was of your own doing with failure to understand our procedures or communicate to understand them. As most guests will see from our many other reviews, we want everyone to have an enjoyable experience. We provide superior service and are the top-rated resort in Lake Placid. We wish you well in finding alternative accommodation the next time you visit. Ed Weibrecht Owner/Operator

One of the best managed and run hotels in the world... and a complete Lake Placid Gem. The Mirror Lake Inn is worth every penny and some of the most spectacular views in the world can be enjoyed from the many rooms and suites in this hotel. We stay at this hotel frequently and actually have a small family reunion with four rooms checking in again this weekend. The staff are receptive, attentive to detail, phenomenal with children and the facilities are beyond what you could hope for. There's a beautiful outdoor pool, indoor pool with sauna, giant whirlpool and waterfall features and a world-class spa. The more casual Cottage Restaurant and The View present the best dining options in Lake Placid to the point where we do not like leaving the property. The beach area with complimentary boat rentals for guests further sweeten the deal. The hospitality here is world-class. And for any guests who complain about the "rustic" rooms..... they are luxurious and match the vibe of this quaint historic property. The modern hotel rooms you'd fine in a sky-scraper Manhattan hotel would ruin the ambiance here. Everything is beautifully maintained. I'm extra thankful this SLH property has a partnership with World of Hyatt. As a Lifetime Globalist with Hyatt, this is how I first discovered the Mirror Lake Inn and our family can't get enough! Thank you!! (Matt G.)

What an incredible last minute choice of vacation spot! My parents had their honeymoon in Lake Placid during the blizzard of ‘47, do I simply had to visit. The Mirror Lake Inn under the management of Andrew Weibrecht is a superb spot. Chris assisted immensely with the reservation. My room overlooked the most surreal, spectacular view of the tranquil lake (where we spotted a lone loon at dawn); the full moon sifting through the trees and whipped cream clouds; and the giant chess set on the lawn. From early a.m. pink sunrise tranquility through the Indian summer day, sitting on the lakeside comfy lounge chairs, reading in solitude; kayaking through the still waters in late afternoon—was purely magical. The welcoming hotel staff are impeccable at attending to every detail to make you feel comfortable and relaxed, from recommending local breakfast places at 10am to getting refills of coffee at 10pm ! Thank you to Will, Erin, Sam, Yra, Emily, Indira, Jay, Jayson, Joyvana and Ankita -staff at the front desk and at the luscious Cottage and elegant View restaurants. The steak au poivre meal at the View was one of the best I’ve ever had! The chicken tikka soup and chicken pesto at the Cottage were luscious. The waitresses were warm and wonderful. The vibe at the cottage is relaxed and upbeat -makes you want to just move in !!! September at the MLI was priceless. I can only imagine how the snowy frozen lake scenery snd toboggan times are in winter. Must go back! Don’t forget to check out the indoor spa with phenomenal pool, mini sitting bridge and hot tub. Amazing!

What a special place! Spending $600/night on hotel is not something my husband and I do but we were left with zero regrets! Looking at photos of the rooms prior to booking, I felt the decor was a bit gaudy but it was actually so warm and comfortable! Every detail is so thoroughly thought out in this place. It’s a fairly large operation with multiple buildings but everything is so well labeled and organized. We are both carpenters and we were highly impressed by the craftsmanship of every trim and built-in - no detail was overlooked, truly. Every sign is custom made to fit the esthetic of the resort. Even outdoor trash bins are built like mini houses that mimic the exterior of the buildings. We stayed at the Mountain View building where most rooms face the lake, it’s absolutely breathtaking. That building connects to the main lodge where the restaurant, gym, spa, and pool are with a walkway so you never have to go outside. The pool area could not have been anymore perfect! Again, everything is done to absolute perfection. The giant jacuzzi is outfitted with different benches and ledges to accommodate everyone’s comfort. The sauna is claded with (what I believe was) cedar so it smells divine. Inside the sauna you can find a wooden bucket and a ladle as well as a conveniently located water spout for those that want to add some moisture to the dry sauna. The pool is beautifully illuminated and features a waterfall which adds a bit more magic to the already stunning environment. Loungers with thick cushions and perfectly rolled towels are readily available and did I mention the most luxurious robes in every room (slippers upon request). The resort has this fresh scent, the kind that is subtle and not overpowering. Bedding and pillows are of top quality and everything is very well maintained. We stayed in room 838 which is one of their “top category” rooms and upon walking in I was a bit disappointed by the bathroom - a standard tub, nothing special. I think had they converted the tub into a giant shower it would feet that much more luxurious and more fitting for the room category but the pool area had certainly made up for it. The only downside there is that you have to walk through the main lobby to get to the pool/spa area so you see people walking through in their robes which is an odd scene (we ended up being those people too and it felt very awkward).

Thank you for your question. The Colonial House is our newest building on property and the most luxurious. The Placid suite features quality Harden residential furnishings and is considered one of our top luxurious suites. The mattress is a Sealy Palatial Crest Firm mattress. We are confident you would not be disappointed in booking the Placid Suite and we look forward to your visit in July.
Thank you for your question. We offer take out service that can be delivered to your room during the hours that The View and the Cottage Cafe are open for dining. For The View restaurant it is not our traditional room service due to COVID. Not all menu items are available for Take out/To-Go. We recommend you view our website dining page for menus and more information.
