This was an incredible stay. A unique place in a spectacular location. Plenty of hiking and beach-going to be done just outside of the hostel grounds. The backpackers itself has a very chill vibe, helpful staff, beautiful place! I really recommend shelling out the extra money for one of their private cabins if you can. We stayed in the 'crystal...

I had a great 2 day stay with Amapondo- great vibes, good music, friendly staff, nice accomodation and food. but the best thing about it was how the staff and friends helped me to recover my stolen cellphone. They went out of their way to drive me around, talk to locals and try to help me get my phone back-...

We're delighted that you had a blast during your stay with us at Amapondo, Amy. And we'll never forget the thrilling adventure we all had tracking down the phone thief. The locals showed us the true meaning of 'Ubuntu' when they dropped whatever they were busy doing to help pursue the chase. It almost felt as if we were in...

One of our best backpacking experiences to date! The facilities are quaint, beautiful and well maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful. The bar is equipped and will have patrons singing long into the nights with regular live entertainment. The food is reasonably priced and deliciously made with love. The billing system is the only area of criticism where patrons...

What a great review, thanks. We agree with everything you said except the last. If you knew our previous billing system, you would agree that this one is far better. However I am glad you brought it to our attention as we are always trying to improve things. Our tab system at the bar and restaurant means that sometimes guests...

What can I say. Special place. We had one of the best trips ever. Beautiful views from the campsite, great hike to the waterfall and surrounding forest, awesome parties with photos to keep the embarrassment alive, awesome food, the staff eventually came to understand what I liked. Just not a very awesome mugging on the beach on New Years Eve,...

We were in the Crystal Lodge and the view is just amazing. We also spent one night in a three bed room with a shared bathroom, I would not recommend that one. However, the self-Catering lodges are great, very romantic, with a great terrace to sit and stare at the ocean.

Thanks for the great review and the three stars. Crystal House is amazing with its panoramic ocean views and spacious living room. Our Family rooms down at the bottom are not self-catering, as you mentioned, and I would definitely choose the Crystal House over a family room. But we have something for everyone's budget. Please come again.

Amapondo is a gorgeous hangout on a jungle hill with an amazing Seaview. They organize all kinds of events in their crafty bar area and receive everyone as family. It has a very laidback ambience but also a good restaurant with a diverse menu. It's a must see for everyone who likes to escape from high speed life!

This place sorely needs a make-over. Peeling paint, grubby walls, cracked floors; it's all here! The place is OK, but it's very rustic and falling way behind the standards of most other South African backpacker places. Paying for a really awful wi-fi signal; not seen this anywhere else in South Africa, is just profiteering.

Sorry you had a bad experience. The main buildings at Amapondo have an interesting history in that they used to be an orphanage many many years ago and they are extremely old. We are situated on a steep hill and over years the slope has shifted causing these old buildings to develop cracked floors in some areas. In fact some...

Very nice relaxed vibe at this place, yes you have to wait for your food a bit longer than usual but hey, this is Africa and you're suppose to be on holiday anyway so get into the groove and you will have a great time! Under the circumstance they are doing a great job, you cannot expect a backpackers lodge...

Thanks for a great review. As we have a full à la carte restaurant menu, but don't necessarily cater to big numbers all the time and experience ebbs and flows with numbers of guests, we are not always prepared when we get sudden big orders. This can slow the kitchen down a bit. However, as you say, this is Africa...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Amapondo is Ama-azing. Amapondo is nestled on a hill on the verge of a tropical rain forest and only 2 minutes walk from a beautiful beach. Head down to sunbathe or plunge in the clear warm waters of the deep rock pools nearby. The African-themed rooms and deluxe private self-catering cottages all have their own unique design and style. The quirkily designed cottages have incredible views, are really comfortable and come at a price that you'll find hard to match. Turtle Cove has one of the best views on the Wild Coast from its upstairs bubble bath, whilst Crystal House, with its glass frontage, offers classic panoramic ocean views. Whether you want a quiet, relaxing break in your own piece of paradise, a base from which you can explore the natural beauty of the area, an adventure on one of their many tours, close interactions with locals, genuine cultural experiences, yoga lessons, a deep tissue massage, or a thumping all-out party at their buzzy bar, you'll find it at Amapondo. ... more   less
