This place sorely needs a make-over. Peeling paint, grubby walls, cracked floors; it's all here! The place is OK, but it's very rustic and falling way behind the standards of most other South African backpacker places. Paying for a really awful wi-fi signal; not seen this anywhere else in South Africa, is just profiteering.

Sorry you had a bad experience. The main buildings at Amapondo have an interesting history in that they used to be an orphanage many many years ago and they are extremely old. We are situated on a steep hill and over years the slope has shifted causing these old buildings to develop cracked floors in some areas. In fact some...

Very nice relaxed vibe at this place, yes you have to wait for your food a bit longer than usual but hey, this is Africa and you're suppose to be on holiday anyway so get into the groove and you will have a great time! Under the circumstance they are doing a great job, you cannot expect a backpackers lodge...

Thanks for a great review. As we have a full à la carte restaurant menu, but don't necessarily cater to big numbers all the time and experience ebbs and flows with numbers of guests, we are not always prepared when we get sudden big orders. This can slow the kitchen down a bit. However, as you say, this is Africa...

Loved the vibe. Staff were friendly. Very cheap accommodation. Great location by the beach and hiking trails. Good food at the restaurant but not much other food to choose from nearby. Not particularly inviting facilities, but it is a backpacker's after all. Loved the quirky donkey.

Thanks for the great review and comments on our friendly staff and good vibe. We pride ourselves on those two aspects above everything else. We are ideally situated across from the best beach in town. We have an awesome restaurant and for those who want a new kind of restaurant, we also own a pizza and seafood restaurant in town....

The room and the bathroom facilities where dirty and smelling. I had cockroaches in my room, so I preferred to sleep the night in my car. The food took forever and was at least cold when finally served. The stuff was not helpful at all exact for a young guy who was working there the first day.

Wow, what a terrible review. I am so sorry that you felt that way. We haven't had such a bad review in ages because we take them so seriously that we immediately call a staff meeting to discuss what can be done. Yesterday was that meeting and your review was discussed amongst all our staff and management. We are in...

The owners and the staff are awesome. The setting of this place is really a piece of paradise. To wake to the view of untouched nature is second to none. Few places like this left on earth. If you want to get away from the hustle and the bustle strongly suggest coming here. Although the sharks are prevalent in the...

If you are looking for a place to stay that makes you feel welcome from the moment you enter, this is your place to go. Only if you really don’t like animals you should not come here but if you like animals and you go there you will find a lovely donkey, dogs, cats and monkeys who will just hang...

Great review, thanks so much. We do have a lot of animals but we live in the Wild Coast and so its a perfect place for animals to hang out. We have one lovely cheeky Donkilizwe , three dogs, three cats, a fish tank full of Gold Fish, and then of course the monkeys that swing in the trees. We...

We stayed in Shakti and Shiva self catering cottages. Right next to each other and ideal for 2 couples. Quite a steep climb up to the cottages, but worth it for the views. Sad to see what has become of the municipal camp site across the lagoon. Restaurant was well priced and great food, but very much on Afrika time....

Hey guys, thanks for the great review. We purposefully take a long time with food preparation to encourage you to chill out and slow the pace down. Just kidding - unlike most backpackers we have a fully ala carte menu, but that means that when large groups arrive without notice, our chef might not have time to call in support...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Amapondo is Ama-azing. Amapondo is nestled on a hill on the verge of a tropical rain forest and only 2 minutes walk from a beautiful beach. Head down to sunbathe or plunge in the clear warm waters of the deep rock pools nearby. The African-themed rooms and deluxe private self-catering cottages all have their own unique design and style. The quirkily designed cottages have incredible views, are really comfortable and come at a price that you'll find hard to match. Turtle Cove has one of the best views on the Wild Coast from its upstairs bubble bath, whilst Crystal House, with its glass frontage, offers classic panoramic ocean views. Whether you want a quiet, relaxing break in your own piece of paradise, a base from which you can explore the natural beauty of the area, an adventure on one of their many tours, close interactions with locals, genuine cultural experiences, yoga lessons, a deep tissue massage, or a thumping all-out party at their buzzy bar, you'll find it at Amapondo. ... more   less
