Detailed Reviews
We had an incredible visit here at the Penrose B&B. The location and views cannot be beat. The owners Whitney & Christie Pope could not be more gracious. Maria and Carrie were wonderful to work with and Chef Stephen was superb with wonderful breakfasts. The rooms are quite comfortable and the big outdoor patios, front and back, are lovely for a glass of wine or to sit and read. The amenities such as soft drinks and water and nuts and snack bars are really pleasant and appreciated.

We stayed at the Penrose B&B their very first night back open after a year of pandemic closure, and it was a truly wonderful experience. There was a small issue with the water heater prior to us arriving, so they upgraded us at no charge with ample notice, and gave us free day spa passes to the nearby Hilton so we could shower and use their facilities (including the hot tubs!)
The rooms themselves were clean and the view of Sedona was stunning. The breakfast truly exceeded my expectations, it was delicious and filling before a day of hiking. The staff was kind and welcoming, including the two owners.
They even gave us a free t-shirt on the way out, which I wear often. Great time overall, would recommend to anyone looking for a quaint B&B experience.

The Penrose is in Oak Creek Village, a very complete part of Sedona. It is about 15 minutes from the center of Sedona and many of the reviewed restaurants. However, around late morning - mid afternoon, it will take longer. Because VOC ( village of Oak Creek) is less developed, it is quieter with less traffic. There are quality restaurants and available hiking trailheads near by. The most popular hiking trails are however, mostly accessed through Sedona which means the bumper to bumper traffic.
The B & B is very clean, the rooms have beautiful views of the red buttes. The breakfast staff is outstanding. Their breakfasts are delicious! I only saw the owners and office staff once when I had an issue and needed to speak with them. They were helpful, but I would have enjoyed a bit more interaction. It was as though I was alone in a house. I generally left by 8 am so I didn't have an opportunity to interact with other guests. I knew they were there as the parking lot was full in the evenings!!
I stayed in the Coconino which was a fine room, however, the heat was an issue. The thermostat often read 75 for room temp. I had to turn on the AC to cool the room at night as turning down the thermostat didn't work. The nights were cool, but the room too hot!
I also found the pillows uncomfortable, and there were 5 of them...all pretty lumpy. And yes, I could have asked for a different pillow to try, but it was not convenient to find anyone to mention my concern.
Don't take this review the wrong way, would I go back, probably as I did appreciate the location and quality of the house.
A real positive of VOC is the proximity to Cottonwood and Jerome. Both towns had some wine tasting, Jerome a beautiful drive up the mountain, and is not as scary as often described, but I stayed on 89 as it has snowed the previous night. I'll write a separate review for the two towns.

Response from Christie Pope, Owner at The Penrose Bed & Breakfast
Responded Jun 20, 2022
Thank you for your review. We, too, are sorry that we were unable to interact with you on a casual basis. We have set up our covid protocols to be as contactless as possible. We understand that people often choose bnb's for the social interaction, and we do have interesting guests, so that is a definite negative. Hopefully, someday we will be able to return to normal. Sorry to learn that your room was too hot but glad you discovered that setting the temperature doesn't help unless you turn on the ac. We appreciate the heads up regarding the pillows. Will change them out for new ones.

The Penrose is in a great location - with views of the mountains from most of the rooms - but that can be said of most places in Sedona.
The rooms themselves are small and lack refrigerators. Breakfasts are good (evening treats are minimal) but overall, the Penrose is very expensive for a good breakfast and tiny rooms.

Stayed here 3 nights in June. Overall a nice experience, but there were some exceptions. We glanced the owners a couple times. Engaged with Whitney & Christie once, but felt they really weren't interested in conversation. I know some people prefer a B&B for the quiet privacy it affords but I enjoy meeting people and I'd hope my hosts would want to learn about their guests. I understand the concerns with COVID, but we were all wearing masks and one can have a conversation while standing 4-6 feet apart. They did have a fantastic system for getting room items replenished (leave the basket from your room outside your door with dirty towels and they will replenish). Our rooms were always locked and no one entered while we were there except myself and husband. Our friend's room had some issue with the shower which didn't get resolved; they were able to use the shower but was a bit inconvenient. The breakfast staff was lovely...one sweet woman who was very engaging and worked hard to get what we need. However, we (there were 2 couples in my traveling party) all felt breakfast was "eh". It was adequate but nothing to write home about. The same goes for the nightly snacks left out for guests. The food could use a little pizzaz. The coffee is extremely dark roast, not to my liking, so was disappointed in that so I enjoyed the orange juice and wonderful English Breakfast tea. The traffic getting to and from downtown Sedona was awful at times. Would I stay here again? Maybe. There were a few billing issues when we got home but they were very good about taking care of it right away.

Besides being an absolutely charming space with amazing views, everyone working here was just lovely. It really felt more like a family home, in the best way possible. Everyone was kind and very accommodating, and the common spaces were very charming. The room was cozy with stunning views to wake up to each morning. And the breakfasts were a nice experience in the cool morning surrounded by the the red rocks. It was great location, very close to everything by car but felt pleasantly isolated with unobstructed mountain views and very quiet.

We had a wonderful time at the Penrose.
We had been there 18 years ago and returned last week.
Witney and his wife have run/own the Penrose since 2000 when they built it and it is absolutely beautiful.
The views from the rooms of Bell Rock and Courthouse Rock are outstanding.
The hospitality is just as good. You actually get a gourmet breakfast here!
The staff is really friendly and you get a really good feel for the community before you ever leave the B&B

Penrose B&B is the only B&B built on the side of Sedona's famous red rocks, The Penrose provides the best views from every room of some of the formations that make Sedona a top-rated tourist attraction. We stayed in the Kokopelli, as a guest of a friend, and boy we we lucky. It is the nicest, I think of all the rooms and it is at least 400$ plus per night, depending on when you go.
The Kokopelli has a nice little sitting room along with the bedroom and includes a flat panel TV, a two-person Jacuzzi, which is just amazing and with separate shower.
There is no closet so you are left with a European style clothes rack, which is just fine, unless you are staying more than a week.
The balcony is the length of the entire room. There is beautiful Mexican furniture, tin mirrors, and pottery in the sitting room and in the bedroom. Out favorite spot was the balcony.
The Penrose has American food. All dishes are great and made from scratch They even have candy for you in your room.
The Penrose has 24/7 access to a free snack bar with pop corn, granola bars, nuts, and a variety of beverages. The staff which is wonderful can refer you to places for dinner or a fine lunch.
The place is perfect. This will be a great once in a lifetime B&B for you. The staff is just so kind, the food is great, the place is spotless and there is so much to do nearby.
You will love this place.

The Penrose has everything—spacious and comfortable rooms in a charming building, attentive service and great food. I stayed in the Coconino room and it was a joy to wake up each morning watching the sunrise hit the red rocks from my panoramic windows. The innkeepers and the staff were attentive and available but not intrusive. Would happily stay again.

What a gem! Our three days here were memorable. The staff was friendly and so helpful even before we checked in. We were walking in downtown Sedona before check in and I fell, hurting my left hand. I called the Penrose for directions to a local medical facility and drove right there. With arm in cast I checked in. From then on each person went out of their way to assist. For those guests who arrive in better shape, you will find breathtaking views of the immediate surroundings, charming rooms with balcony or patio, and great breakfasts on the deck with hummingbirds frolicking in one of the fountains. The Popes have paid great attention to providing the necessities and the luxuries to enjoy here in this sanctuary.

Hello and thank you for the question! Unfortunately we do not have an elevator. We have 5 rooms at the Penrose with 1 room being located downstairs. That room is called the Yavapai and perhaps might be the right room selection for you.
Breakfast is served between 8 am - 9 am.
Yes! There are many small non chain restaurants.
I agree with other comment. There are other restaurants about 15 min away, in downtown Sedona.
Right, no pool.
Hello -
I spoke with a couple who had a downstairs room, and they loved it. I assume it is the room you mention, but I don't know. It's right off the living area. The walkway is entirely flat from the parking area. I just had a knee replacement a year ago, so I'm conscious of distance, and it didn't seem very far to me. I can't estimate the yards to the back door, but it seems accessible as the parking area is adjacent to the house.
Hope this is accurate, and that it helps!
