Pongwe Beach Hotel garners acclaim for its exceptional service, as guests frequently laud the staff's warm hospitality and attentiveness. The comfort and cleanliness of the rooms, complete with eco-friendly features, are often highlighted, alongside the hotel's picturesque beachfront location that offers a slice of tranquil paradise. While the atmosphere is celebrated for its charm and traditional style, opinions on value show some discrepancy due to additional costs. Nonetheless, the amenities, including the scenic bungalows and serene beach, are popular among travelers, despite some concerns over extra fees.

We have been going to the magnificent Pongwe beach hotel for 16 years , and year after year we meet many other guests who are also returnees , and they come from many different countries and continents . The loyalty that Pongwe inspires in its guests is just amazing !
Why ? Because Pongwe has the most beautiful vibe , the most beautiful beach on the island , it’s not big , it’s not loud , it’s the place for perfect relaxation , for eating superb food , breakfast lunch and dinner if you want . You will not be hassled on this white horseshoe shaped private beach .
You can walk ( at low tide ) to other restaurants and you can take taxis , arranged by the hotel , to wherever you want on the island .
There are also fabulous boat trips .
It’s hard to explain the lure of Pongwe beach hotel , like many places in Zanzibar the staff are just gorgeous . Over the years some of them have changed but they are always so helpful , so lovely , all of them . The rooms are different , some with a/c and plunge pools , a couple of really luxurious ones , others simple but cleaned so well , the restaurant is lovely , the views from the restaurant and infinity pools are wonderful . You can have your lunch right on the beach , by the pool , in front of your room .
Your dreams all come true at Pongwe courtesy of the truly great management staff , JV , Sara and Wesley who run Pongwe as though it were one of the leading hotels in the world !
Please don’t come to Pongwe if you want nightly entertainment , if you want watersports or loud music by the pool … we usually go at Christmas and New Year and this year we were so spoiled by the magnificent BBQ ‘s on the beach , steak , lobster , grilled fish …
I can’t say enough good things about Pongwe Beach hotel , it’s paradise .

Stayed here for 6 nights at the end of safaris in Kenya. We had 2 villas with a view of the sea (rooms 3 and 4) and were only a few meters from the beach. On checking in, my main concern was that the rooms would be too hot because the temperature was over 30 degrees but a ceiling fan and a floor-standing fan did their job well. Our villa was simple but had all that we needed ....shower, 2 large bottles of water each day, toiletries, hairdryer, mosquito nets and the bed was comfortable and everything was clean, thanks to the charming housekeepers. We were never disturbed by any kind of noise - Pongwe Beach Hotel is superbly peaceful.
Meals in the restaurant were a pleasure because the staff is delightful and friendly and the food excellent and plentiful. The public areas are roomy and open to the sea breeze.

We walked along the beach when the tide was out and visited the village where we met some friendly and chatty young men who invited us to their football training that afternoon.

Pongwe Beach would not suit party-animals and those in search of entertainment but, for us, it was perfect; a place in which to relax, read, swim, watch a couple of the hotel's staff climbing the trees to knock down some coconuts...the milk of which we were later given to drink on the beach.
Desert island stuff!
Thank you, all at Pongwe Beach.

We are a couple and we stayed for 6 nights over new year in Pongwe Beach Hotel. This is really one of the most beautiful hotels and places on Zanzibar (and we were the 2nd time on Zanzibar and we stayed all over the island in 7 different hotels).

The beach and the ocean in Pongwe are just stunning, the property itself is very well maintained and in a beautiful traditional style and you'll immediately see that they have an eye on the small things. Also the pool is nice and has a beautiful view over the ocean. As nearly everywhere on Zanzibar there is high and low tide and you can't swim all the time, this was never and issue for us.

The staff is lovely and very service oriented, they go for every guest above and beyond. Also they speak very good English and understand all your needs. We really want to highlight that because we were in many 5 star hotels where the staff could not compare to them in any way. They make you feel always welcome and like you're at home. At this point thank you for everything guys, you really made our stay special!!

The size of the rooms is fine and they are beautiful, only thing missing is a minibar or at least a fridge (the safe is at the reception but this works very well as they separately lock your stuff). The rooms have no glass in the windows (just a net) so you hear the ocean and the "jungle sound", which was fine for us.

The food in this hotel is the best you can find on the whole island (it was also recommended to us by many experienced people). You choose everyday 3 courses for dinner and everything was served. We just loved it, especially the amazing tuna carpaccio! If there is one thing which could be improved in the restaurant it is the waiting time for the breakfast. The breakfast was really good but as it is due to Corona not a buffet, it takes quite a bit. However, they came up everyday with new ideas for breakfast and we really liked it!

The spot is also very good to go diving at Mnemba Atoll (we did 3 dive days there with One Ocean). Overall Pongwe Beach Hotel was heaven on earth for us and we can highly recommend this place to everybody visiting Zanzibar.

Also if you need a driver on the island we can also highly recommend our driver (and friend) Ali Baba (+255 777 415 195) he is so helpful and will charge you fair prices!

Finally, many thanks again for everything guys and especially for celebrating the New Year with us! We wish you all the best and hope that we can revisit you soon again!!

Tucked away on its own private beach sits the beautiful Pongwe Beach Hotel. My sister and I stayed for 4 blissful nights after our 9 day safari and WOW WOW WOW. So peaceful and relaxing. The staff was extremely attentive and yet not at all intrusive. We stayed in one of beach front bungalows just steps to the amazing Indian ocean. The room was extremely clean and the ceiling fan and air conditioning kept us cool and comfortable. There is even a small water tap to rinse your feet off outside before you go into your room. The water pressure was great and we even got a wi- fi signal in our room. We read many reviews before choosing this place and we really made the right decision. We wanted a quite calm environment and that is exactly what we got. The food was super yummy and always served so much more than we could possibly eat. We decided to go to ta spa one day and snorkeling another. Both excursions we arranged through the front desk perfectly. Due to a change in our flight departure by our airline we had to depart at 6:00 am and the staff even arranged to give us a boxed breakfast and light lunch to take with us as well as have freshly made coffee and tea waiting for us while we waited for our driver to pick us up. For us it was the perfect end to an unbelievable trip of a lifetime and Pongwe Beach Hotel will forever be a very cherished memory. Many thanks to you all

Beach was lovely but a few locals being pushy with tourist tat, resort does its best to discourage this but still happens on the public beach. There is a really nice infinity pool overlooking the beach. But was the other end of the resort so we didn’t use much. Spent most of our time lazing on the beach and in hammocks.

Family/couples orientated so expect a few screaming children around at all times

We obviously missed the welcome drink/orientation and were charged our 1st breakfast due to our early arrival time on the first day, check-in 8/9 am? Which wasn't an ideal start to our week's holiday.

The cleaning team wasn't exactly 100% felt a bit like 'island time' which was expected but annoying when you're still waiting for towels at 5 pm.

Moody one of the Head waiters always friendly
Agness 1? Genuinely friendly unlike the others who feel a bit robotic and like they are reading a script.
Great breakfast with daily rotating cooked menu

After 3/4 days staff started pushing 'special beach dining' and boat tours which we politely declined (as we've done many of these things previously)

Staff aren't amazing at English but are friendly anyway way, and their English is better than my Swahili so 🤷🏼‍♂‍

Looked like they were closing for the offseason

Small typical British owned African style hotel on quiet side of Zanzibar. The place to be for couples and families that prefer authenticity, quietness, good service by local people, a lovely beach and pool over big resorts with buffets and animation. The rooms are simple in local style but clean and comfortable. We were next to the beach in the furthest room from the restaurant and woke up to the seashore. There's cooling above the bed but we preferred the warm sea breeze - there's no glass windows, just a net against mosquitos. The food was great, the kitchen professional and clean albeit slow at times, and we didn't have major stomach issues. There's a coral reef at about 1,5 km from the shore which keeps the sea water clean and free from jellyfish. No water shoes needed for a swim if it's high tide (noon). We had lots of personal contact with the staff which was very helpful and friendly. You can eat on the beach upon request, which is highly recommended. On Fridays a three-man band comes over to play local and reggae music. The hotel arranged us a trip to a spice farm and Stone Town at a very fair price (1/4 of what another agent offered). Stone Town is about 1 h drive but apart from the 500 m road to the hotel roads are good. We also did a trip to Mbemba island for snorkeling, which was 40 min drive and half a day on the boat. This trip was arranged via our travel agency, but probably much less expensive via the hotel. Overall we had a fantastic time at Pongwe Beach Hotel (don't mix it up with the Pongwe Beach Resort as our travel agent initially did!).

We visited the Pongwe Beach Hotel with our boys (19 and 22) and found it an excellent place to relax and unwind. From arrival to departure the staff we friendly, helpful, and welcoming. We had booked two cottages for the 4 of us, but were fortunate to be upgraded to a two room suite with private pool and air conditioning.
The whole atmosphere in the Pongwe Beach Hotel is relaxed (polepole) which is perfect, the limited number of guests makes Pongwe feel small, and friendly with almost personal service. The beach is private and we were not bothered by "beach boys" selling things until we ventured round the coast at low time, walking to Pongwe town.
Meals are served in the main resturant, although room service is available, and the food was of a high quality, with a broad choice of dishes avaialble.

The hotel is well maintained with the public areas (beach included) being regularly swept and cleared adding to the quality feel of Pongwe Beach.

Without exception the staff were friendly, but wihtout the expectation of tipping. Gratuities can be given on check out and are distributed amongst all of the staff.

A special treat for the hotel was to see the Bush Babies (Greater galago) that frequent the aptly named Bush Baby Bar!

We stayed in pongwe Beach hotel for 3 nights and were the best in zanzibar..
First we got surprised by the beautiful welcome and the kindness of stuff that we did not see in Kendwa..
Especially the restaurant stuff, always ready to help with a big smile, I will gonna miss all of you ❤️ the chef were happy to make whatever we order even if it's not included on the menu..
Housekeeping stuff are very polite and every evening they spray our room and put the nets on...
Hotel deserves to be a 5* and by sure we will back soon 😊

An hours drive from the airport this small boutique hotel is tucked away from the road on a stunning private white sand beach. All the rooms are located either on or a few minutes stroll from the beach, well maintained and clean & comfortable. All the staff are so friendly, the food in the restaurant was varied and of very good quality, happy hour for cocktails every day also free fruit in the late afternoon, tea & coffee available all day. Kayaks and paddle boards also available. The beach is cleaned each morning and once the tide goes back you can walk out some way and also to the local village. We couldn’t fault anything our only regret was not staying longer. We will return without hesitation.

things to improve: in the bedroom safe box, kettle, a glass in the bathroom to place toothbrushes. Pillows for the sun chairs, otherwise they are very uncomfortable.
For breakfast it would be nice to have a different juice each day and not always de the same.
Also to order the food two hours earlier is a bit annoying.

Dear Victoria Many thanks for your review and we are truly sorry that the hotel did not live up to your expectations and the high standards that we set ourselves. Firstly, thank you, as you mention, we do have a nice beach, one of the best in Zanzibar and our rooms are an authentic yet simple Zanzibari style (with some modern amenities such as the breeze bed air conditioning system). We are always seeking to improve and have taken on board your list of improvements and will be moving forward with some of them. Regarding the restaurant, our breakfast is slightly different due to not being able to have the usual buffet due to Covid-19 restrictions. However we have reminded our staff that we can make any available fresh fruit juices (as I believe they made for you) for any guests. Our restaurant sources as much fresh as possible from suppliers on the island and this creates a weak supply chain but does benefit the local population. By ordering dinner in advance it allows us to make sure that these supply chain problems are negated for yourselves. We hope to see you in Pongwe again when we can show you our changes

At the resort we wore shorts and tees. Not as strict but if you go into Stonetown make sure to be covered up respectfully. No swimsuits with coverups, or short shorts with singlettes are allowed into town. There are signs posted everywhere.

Just, get there & chill first. The staff are brilliant & will help you with activities. Personally I would recommend going to Zanzibar City/Stone Town & do the ‘Slave Museum, Royal Fort/Palace etc. Eat on the seafront & enjoy. A taxi is cheap & organised by the hotel-top tip: Use the same driver & he will look after you!
