We were here with a large group (80) for lunch. We started with very good mimosas. We had a choice of appetizer of salad or corn chowder. The chowder was excellent !! For the entrees, we had a choice of burger, eggs Benedict, crab cake or Croque Monsier (ham and cheese panini). The staff was very good for waiting on... More

Our party of eight had a lovely dinner where every dish ordered was to our liking. Our table began with oysters, shrimp cocktail, salads and a beef marrow bone the size of a large ear of corn. We went on to fine entrrs with no room left for dessert. The waitstaff was competent without intruding. The only negative was the... More

We sat in the front of the bar with the chess and backgammon board and had a great lunch early Sunday afternoon. The prices were as expected with being in a place like that but it was worth it in my opinion. The wine list was more like an encyclopedia and had amazing information about all the different varietals they... More

4 of us stopped in for a nightcap and 2 and half hrs later we all agreed we'll be back. They have a great bartender serving generous drinks. Its in an old hotel built more than a hundred years ago and its just like it was when it was built except the prices are a bit higher. It's a treasure... More

Lunch was served in the small "Atrium" off the main dining room. Prompt and courteous service. Goat cheese omlette with fresh salad was delicious, an oversized shrimp salad with pears, avocado, bacon bits could have fed two. The Banana Foster topped the meal. We'll be back. : )

After a rather disappointing stay at a Shelter Island hotel, we arrived with mixed feelings at the American. Similar in style to the hotel we had just left, 'American dream of a bygone yesterday' I might call it, I was now worried about another night on a bygone mattress. Little did I have to worry. We arrived in a dream.... More

If you are here, you are somebody, but that may mean somebody who settle for want to be fab food. The lobster served out of the shell takes away all my fun, sorry! Love the atmosphere though and the backgammon table, so cerebral!

This was an amazing place to stay !! The proximity to everyhing you want to do in sag harbor is unparalleled. The room is so sweet. Everything is kept in non modern times -- if you're looking for top of the line clean lines this is not the place. But if you're up for a great bathroom jacuzzi and a... More

Although we felt it was charming on the first floor and the restaurant had upscale sterling silver and china, the room was worn out and we were disappointed for $350 a night we didn't have coffee or a TV in the room.

I truly love this place! Yes, the prices are high but what do you expect when you get impeccable service and an amazing dining experience! I love the old world feel. They serve breakfast and dinner, which I've had many times and have never been disappointed. We have been coming for years and the Maitre'D, servers, hostess and bartenders always... More
