Nestled in Saratoga Spa State Park, The Gideon Putnam enchants guests with its welcoming, historic atmosphere and a serene outdoor setting. While the prime location is consistently celebrated, opinions on value are marred by high prices and extra charges. Room experiences vary, with some finding comfort and modernity but others noting cleanliness and noise issues.
Service receives mixed reviews, balancing concerns about responsiveness with praise for the shuttle and friendly staff. Amenities are a point of contention, with calls for refurbishment despite some positive notes on the hotel's unique charm.

Detailed Reviews
My friends and I visited the Gideon for a long weekend of spa, food and relaxation. The spa was fantastic! We all enjoyed our mineral bath soak and massage. The spa staff were/are top notch! The buffet breakfast we had on our last morning there was wonderful. TOM and the other gentleman who drives the shuttle are friendly and are a wealth of information about the area and events.
However our room (413) needed some improvement. The dresser appeared to be scratched, and the TV didn't work when we turned it on. We did some basic tracing of plugs, etc. and were able to fix it. On our last evening in the room the refrigerator stopped working and we had to throw away the hard boiled eggs that were purchased earlier in the day. Again we checked plugs, etc and saw nothing obvious as to why the refrigerator no longer worked. The beds and pillows were very comfortable.
The bathroom is in need of an intervention. It looked as if it was updated with a new lighting fixture and tub surround (excellent). BUT the bathroom wall with the sink looked as if a small child spackled it (very lumpy and you could see indentations in the wall where other fixtures used to be). Above the sink was a tile soap dish and another tile accessory. We could not tell what accessory it should have been since it was cleaved off the wall (all you saw was a jagged tile outline of what was there). We also noticed that the white tile had a green underlayer since some of the tiles about the room were peeling.
My friends and I arrived on a Friday and left on a Sunday. Upon returning from our day on Saturday we noticed that our room was not turned over (beds made, fresh towels, etc.). We called the front desk and they indicated that when were were out for dinner they would come and tidy the room. We returned around 10:30pm and the room was not "done" and we had no fresh towels. We were offered guest services to come and tidy up the room when we called the front desk at 10:30pm, but we were all a bit tired and requested fresh towels which we received almost immediately.
The Gideon has only been open a short period of time since its Winter Refresh. For the price we paid for the room, we have mixed feelings regarding our stay. The spa staff are wonderful, the food we ate was excellent, and overall the staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful but our room needed a more significant refresh.

The hotel seems impressive as you drive up and Is located on a beautiful property. Next to a golf course and within minutes to the spa. It is also conveniently located near the center of town. The old world charm of the lobby and setting makes you think this is truly a 5 star property...that is until you go to the rooms.
We booked this through a travelzoo promotion and perhaps this is the reason for the quality of our room. The bathroom was small but this is expected in an old hotel. The problem was that it was in very bad shape. It appears that whatever repairs were made to the room were very poor quality. It seemed as if the tiles In the bathroom were painted over with white and the paint was peeling in many places. The coffeemaker (although a Keurig) was not working.
The restaurant was closed and they failed to mention this anywhere in their website or communication. We had the buffet breakfast and the selections were extremely limited. Basically scrambled eggs, potatoes and bacon/sausage. There normal pastries and fruits and cereals but also limited selections. Although there was a station for omelettes and probably pancakes, this was only available for people that were there on a conference and not for the regular guests. The price was not adjusted for the limited selection. The reception desk employees were lovely and helpful. Although a lovely hotel, it is not close to a 5 star rating.

We enjoyed our stay - it is a beautiful location. However, beware that if you book a queen room you may not get a queen sized bed. When we insisted that it was not what we had booked and paid for they did give us a bit of a discount. Also there was no hairdryer or ice bucket in the room - they brought them to us when we went downstairs to ask. It is not a 4 star hotel but it is charming and very pleasant and the grounds are beautiful. We met friends on the patio for breakfast and the food was very good even though their brunch was cancelled. We like the quaint feel and the old style rooms and the room was clean and comfortable for our one night stay even with the small sized bed.

+1
My wife and I recently went for a three night stay to see the colors of autumn. The colors and the location of the hotel did not disappoint. HOWEVER, the hotel was a major let down. We stayed in an enclosed porch room at a cost of nearly $400 per night. The hotel room was run down. Our enclosed porch had a cracked window, there was peeling paint, dirty carpeting, missing window locks, and a noisy antiquated heating system that was uneven and very noisy. We cut our trip short because we didn't want to spend another night sleeping there.

The Gideon Putnam has beautiful grounds and is conveniently located, but the service and accomodations really need improvement. Our room was run down with stained carpets and walls, slow plumbing, and an air conditioner that sounded like a plane taking off. The floors in the gym and stairwells were dusty and littered with dead bugs. There was no luggage service. Housekeeping walked into our room without even knocking. WiFi was an anemic 4.8 mpbs. It was great for the Saratoga Jazz Festival because it was in walking distance, but I don't think I'd stay here for any other reason.

We booked a king room for two nights during the week in July. When we went to our room, it was already occupied and the couple got extremely angry (understandably). We went back to the front desk and they corrected their error and gave us a free beer/wine in the bar, which we would never go to -- it was shabby, tired and dark.
The room smelled moldy and musty. The AC was extremely loud. The bed was very uncomfortable. It was furnished in old furniture you'd find in a thrifty store. The bathroom was clean but old and a complete turnoff. Our stay was a complete rip off for the price we paid. The hotel is tired, old and needs a complete face lift.
Upon check out, we mentioned the above and no one cared. We had to ask for a discount and they took of the $25/day amenity fee. We also asked for a feather free room and were told Housekeeping wouldn't be back until 8am the next morning. Such poor customer relations. Hotels are 24-7 and should accommodate all guest requests, especially something as simple as pillow.
Do not say here. The Courtyard Marriott would have been a better choice.

We made a reservation on Expedia and when we got to the hotel, the clerk said he has no record of the reservation. Then we showed a confirmation, he said he doesn't have a standard room with double beds available which we needed and reserved as we were traveling with kids. He offered a deluxe room at 50% more. The proper thing to do would have been to offer whatever double room he had available at the reserved price.
This was 11 o'clock at night and the hotel obviously doesn't care about hospitality. Interestingly, the hotel's own website at this time showed availability of standard rooms with double beds. So be prepared that your reservation may not be honored.

I just spent 2 nights at the historic Gideon Putnam hotel. We took both dogs, as they are dog friendly, and honestly super accommodating. Nearly all other visitors with dogs were very responsible. Rooms are pretty spaciousness for the age of the hotel and even though it's winter there were still lots of places to walk in the Saratoga springs state park that is attached. We will go back in warmer weather for sure.

We spent a lovely weekend to celebrate our anniversary. When we mentioned this to the from desk manager, we were upgraded to a suite. It turns out we were in the room across from the one we stayed in on our honeymoon. We enjoyed the beautiful porch especially. The bathroom could use some updating, otherwise the hotel is beautiful. It's too bad the restaurant was closed. They do offer food and drink for sale in the hotel store. There is plenty of parking. Our room was quiet. The person in housekeeping on our floor was particularly pleasant and helpful.

We had a 1:00 p.m. reservation for brunch our family (5 children & 8 adults) Easter celebration. We were finally seated at 2:15. The host sat us at the bar with three tables in a line - some of our family members sat in “crevices”…. Some of the food at the buffet was leftover from earlier seatings; one of the adults chose not to eat at all when they attempted to make a plate with waffles which were still cold. The roast beef at the “carving station” was so rare it still had a heart beat. Most of the chafing dishes on the buffet were empty! There was no wait staff to see us until they needed to begin clearing the tables. The pre-frozen desserts were brought to the tables on trays without plates for us to put our choices on; I would have thought for the price of the meal and the reputation of this buffet that they would have had a pastry chef. At the end the manager reduced the price of our meal; she said it was her first day. We felt really bad for the wait staff; very poor planning on management’s part - it ruined our Easter meal !

When we stayed the restaurants were not open. This is an older, historic hotel though everything was in good working order.
Good morning - you can find our breakfast menu under the Lodging & Dining tab on our website. Thank you.
Yes, we love our four-legged guests.
Sorry but I do not have access to the Gideon Putnam's reservation system. My suggestion is to contact the hotel directly.
The baths are private, not shared. Not sure if kids would enjoy the baths. They last 40 minutes, and it is just you in a deep tub in a quiet, low lit room with light spa music playing in the background.
As for the rooms, the hotel does allow pets. I've been on the elevator with people who have dogs. My husband is very allergic to cats and he doesn't have a problem at this hotel, but then again we usually spend a lot of time outdoors and not in the hotel itself. If your kids are very allergic, even to dogs, then I would consider staying somewhere else. Also the hotel is older and somewhat renovated, but I have never found it to be dirty, or really dusty, but there is carpeting in the rooms, so again, if your kids are very allergic you may want to stay somewhere else.
