The beautiful location makes Shelter Island one of our favorite spots to get away from city life. That being said, I can’t recommend this overpriced, pretentious hotel. We had to ask every day to get someone to clean our room and then call again - and again - to get new glasses or towels. They forgot to bring our breakfast and charged ridiculous prices for mediocre fare in the restaurant. Avoid this place and enjoy the beauty of the island instead.

The service here is absolutely horrific. Upon arrival our room wasn’t “ready for us” and we had to wait almost an hour in their loud bar area to check in. We decided to let that slip and try their restaurant for dinner. Worst mistake we’ve ever made. It took 35 minutes to receive our cocktails, which were water by the time we got them. Once we were able to finally order (an hour and a half later while our server danced around the patio with bus boys) our appetizers were delivered to the wrong table, which resulted in them running out of our $100 worth of appetizers, which were not comped from the bill. Same thing happened with our entrees, same thing happened with our bill. When we asked for the check to just take the loss and leave, our “server” aggressively demanded we order dessert and made my wife and our friends extremely uncomfortable. When the check finally arrived, it was for the full cost of everything we ordered and never received, and when we questioned our “server” as to why we’re paying for food we never got he put on a massive scene and made my wife cry. I paid in full, and tipped 15%. This led our “server” to yell at my wife AGAIN questioning her why he didn’t get 20% because “his service was impeccable” Absolutely abysmal service, insanely rude, disturbingly entitled, the least relaxing beginning of a vacation we’ve ever experienced. I just booked a new hotel in Greenport and will never return to this dump for any reason.

The staff really did their best to stay out of the way when needed, be in the way when wanted and pretty much get you anything you might need at a whim. Nate, was exemplary and truly made our experience super comfortable. The rooms were very relaxing and the decks are super spacious. It’s was super nice to be able to walk to the beach for a dip, come back to the outdoor lounge area where the fire pits are for cocktails, and then head up to our room for a morning nap. Restaurants on Shelter Island are all 5-6 minutes away. At breakfast they have coffee and croissants at the Sunset Beach office where you check in, and Friday thru Monday mornings they have yoga on the beach. Sundays from 3pm til they close are Balaeric Sundays featuring DJs that rock it. Highly recommended for a relaxing, calming and very chilled beachy stay. The property is truly unique and the staff definitely added to that magic on our stay.

My wife and I stayed at Sunset Beach several days in 2019 - what a wonderful secluded, exotic and fun time! We had reservations for 2020, but with COVID they understandably remained closed and provided full refund. We will certainly be back in 2021!

Love the food, the evening fire, the boat ride in and the Mojitos. The service is eclectic, but fine. Going to miss it in 2020. Parking is a huge pain in the rear end but not much they can do about it. Love the Chanel event last year and the whole weekend rebranding.

The great view cannot offset the outrageous prices for mediocre wine. Buckets of rose sangria half filled with ice for over 100 Dollars. Tiny glasses of Rose for 16 Dollars. It is a rip-off. We cannot recommend this place to any of our European friends who like traveling to Long Island.

We understand this is "the" place for the fun, European vibe. We understand the food is ok. We understand the service is quick (turn the tables"). Yes, we are seasonal regulars..... BUT, we DON'T understand $135 for a pitcher of rose' sangria. A pitcher half filled with ICE. Buyer Beware.

To keep it simple, Sunset Beach is very focused on their restaurant and bar scene. Complete with a dismissive, unhelpful staff and a parking attendant seemingly hell bent on making a traffic jam for show. Behind all this "glamour", is a run down, over priced hotel. The physical plant is neglected despite a lengthy off season. It is a 2 star hotel at best. From sub par front staff to rooms in disrepair, this hotel is a disgrace. They have a horrific corporate philosophy and zero interest in improvement. I'll let my pictures do the talking ( I asked to discuss these concerns with the manager- he/she has yet to contact me). In their defense, a very self assured front desk girl told me I should be happy they had come to clean the FILTHY AC and pull the 10 inch weeds on my rotted deck after my first day there. She seemed confused when I said probably it would have been better to not have had me need to ask that in the first place. Do not stay here unless desperate.

During our brief day drip to Shelter Island, my boyfriend wanted to check out Sunset Beach (and so the review is based only on the restaurant/bar and not on the hotel itself). So I made a late lunch reservation at the restaurant. We pull up to the hotel in our car and already see a party scene that looks more appropriate for Montauk or the Hamptons. As the hotel parking lot is roped off, I hop out of the car to ask if we can park there given we have reservations (we got there right at 3:15PM for our 3:15PM reservation). The guy who was manning parking said we had to park further down the street on the beach side of the hotel and that he sees no reservations until 4PM. Confused, I went to the hostess who asked me if the parking people were giving us trouble. She comes with me back to the parking lot and tells the guy to let us in because we have reservations, to which the guy then gives some weird response thinking I was asking for other people. We park the car and were told by the hostess that our table would be ready soon. We were led to a table that wasn't ready for us before redirected to outdoor seating on sand. The waitress we had seemed underenthusiastic in her demeanor. We opted not to stay long and just snack on the warm artichoke and warm petite Basque cheese. I had a Summer Fling cocktail. Everything was okay, but rather expensive for what they were. Adding the mediocre service made the experience feel as if coming to Sunset Beach was all about the scene and not about the experience itself. The only bright point was the hostess who went out of her way to come with me to sort things out with the parking lot and made sure we were seated as soon as possible. Otherwise, save your dining experience for classier places like the Pridwin or the Chequit.

My wife and I spent 1 night at sunset beach looking for a good night sleep and there was party with blasting music and people scream until 3 AM on the room on top of us. We tried calling down but nobody answered, then we went to front desk and nobody was there. the next day we told them and they showed no concern just said sorry about that. Beach was nice, bar was nice but the hotel and room was very minimal. Would return for an afternoon but would not sleep there again.
