Located in the bustling heart of Stone Town the building was originally set up and used as an Indian Merchant House in the 19th century. In the 125 years that were to come the building was home to one of the many Sultan families and then became a hotel some years ago. After purchasing the hotel, renovations started in May 2008. Most of the hotel has been restored into its original state, but we have been making some changes as well. The result is The Swahili House - a sparkling hotel with traditional influences and modern day facilities in combination with authentic Swahili hospitality.

Located just next to the market and the zanzibar coffee house. The rooms are clean, bright and the bed is comfortable (hard) The staff is really helpful and since our room was free after us we were able to keep it until the afternoon when we had to leave for the airport. The roof top is lovley and is where the breakfast is being served.

Really disappointed that such a lovely rooftop is being let down by its food. Waited an hour and what was delivered was for the $$$$ price was actually sorry have to say awful. I ordered steak which came with tinned asparagus on lumpy potato mash. The prawns with basil potatoes were just average and the potato was hard. Couple of the prawns should not have been put on the plate as they were black and inedible. Chef/owners please take these comments as a way to move forward and improve the food, you have a great location let down by the food

The Swahili house is a good central spot to stay in stone Town, the rooftop is a great place to grab a meal and drink and the view is not bad. The staff are friendly and its clean and comfortable. It’s also close to the Zanzibar coffee house.

I thought the food was overpriced $25 for a chicken pasta dish, that was nothing special, with average presentation. The staff were attentive and friendly. We went to 6degrees south the night after and our food was far far better, beautifully presented and far cheaper.

My wife and I stayed at The Swahili House in 2009. This year we popped in for a drink in the rooftop bar restaurant. The hotel has maintained its classic Arab appeal and a lift (elevator) has been installed. It was reassuring to chat to staff who had been there since our last visit and, although this was a brief encounter, I would still recommend the place to stay, drink, and eat.
